Al Rayyan went up 2-0 on a basket by Yasseen Musa (204-F-80) to start the game, however that would be the only lead that they saw that game, as Al Gharaffa, lead by their floor general, Boney Watson (183-G, college: Sam Houston St.), went on a 14-0 run to go up by a score of 14-2; Al Rayyan never recovered. It was total domination for Al Gharrafah from start to finish. Michael Okpalaeze (198-C), the rookie out of Dubuque College, led Gharaffah in scoring, notching 20 points to go along with 8 rebounds and 3 assists. Omer Abgader Salem (205-C-83) had 17 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks and 3 assists. Watson (183-G, college: Sam Houston St.) scored 11, and added 4 boards, 6 assists and 4 steals. Mohammed Abdullah Ali (192-G-87) also scored 11 points, had 8 rebounds (3 offensive), and 3 steals. His energy on the court though, does not show up on the score sheet. Abdullah was everywhere he needed to be on the court. He was patient, had great shot selection and most importantly stayed out of early foul trouble, an issue that he has been dealing with all season. Finally, Ousseynou N'Diaye (195-G/F-85), added 16 points for the victors, with his sweet shot and silky smooth moves. Al Rayyan was again led by the always dependable, and never tiring, Yasseen Musa, who scored 13 and had 10 rebounds. While Mohammad Saleem Abdullah (205-C-82) had identical numbers in the loss. Game 2 will be played on Tuesday night. It should be another great one!
In the earlier match, for 3rd place, Al Jaysh Army SC dominated As Sadd Sports Club to take a 1-0 lead in the best of 3 series. Game 2 is scheduled for tonight.

Al Gharrafah has had a very successful season finishing 2nd overall, after finishing 2nd to bottom last season. Al Jaysh Army SC and As Sadd Sports Club round up the top 4, and are the other 2 semi-finalists. Al Arabi Club Doha had a very disappointing season, where they finished with a 5-9 record. Their off-season move to not resign their former coach David Ingham obviously backfired. In his time with Al Arabi Club Doha, Coach Ingham won the GCC Championship (the first and only in club history), a Heir Apparent cup, and finished in the top 3 every year he was there; in 2006-07 they finished tied with Al Rayyan for the best record. Al Arabi Club Doha had its most successful run in their club's history under Coach Ingham's. It has been quite a fall from grace for the once very respected club. Maybe they should bring Coach Ingham back.
The bottom three were Al Ahli Sports Club, Al Wakrah, which both had identical 4-10 records. Al Ahli Sports Club finished above Al Wakrah as they swept the season series. Qatar Sports Club had too many off the court issues to concentrate on basketball, as they lost 3 of their top players from last year, and as a result suffered on the court. They finished the season bottom of the league with a 2-12 record.
