The Qatar U16 basketball team concluded its campaign at the 22nd Arab Championship, held in Cairo, Egypt, following a competitive match against Tunisia on Friday, August 15, 2025. The game, played at Hall 3 of the Cairo International Stadium complex, ended with a narrow 80-72 victory for Tunisia. Qatar entered the match fully aware of the challenge posed by a well-organized and physically strong Tunisian side. The first quarter saw both teams evenly matched, with Tunisia edging out a 19-17 lead. In the second quarter, Qatar maintained their composure, matching Tunisia’s pace to end the period tied at 19-19, leaving Tunisia ahead 38-36 at halftime. The third quarter proved challenging for Qatar, as Tunisia capitalized on individual errors to secure a 19-12 lead, creating a tough hurdle heading into the final quarter. Despite this, Qatar’s young players displayed remarkable resilience in the fourth quarter, outscoring Tunisia 24-23 with a spirited performance. However, time ran out before they could overturn the deficit, resulting in an eight-point loss. With this match, Qatar concluded their preliminary round participation in the tournament, which features six teams—Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Algeria, Tunisia, and Egypt—competing in a single round-robin format. Qatar finished with 5 points, having previously faced Bahrain (58-90), Kuwait (59-61) in a thrilling encounter, Egypt (58-79), and Algeria (35-57). Despite the results, the championship provided invaluable experience for Qatar’s rising stars. The participation aligns with the Qatar Basketball Federation’s strategy to nurture young talent and prepare players for future regional and international competitions. The Qatar delegation in Cairo is led by Mr. Abdullah Sultan Al Jaber, a member of the Qatar Basketball Federation’s board, with support from Mr. Khaled Al Mughni, Director of Youth National Teams. |
