Dubai: Al Shabab achieved their second biggest honour in basketball when they tamed Hoops of Lebanon 90-75 in the final of the second Al Shabab Basketball Championship that concluded late on Saturday.
This will rate as their second most important trophy in basketball after their triumph in the Gulf Clubs Championship two years ago. This is way up there for us as we have played so many different schools of basketball and triumphed, Al Shabab coach Ahmad Omar told Gulf News.
Al Shabab made a nervous start and were able to lead for the first time with two and-a-half minutes remaining of the opening quarter on Taylors triple to walk off with a slender one-point lead at 21-20.
The hosts then maintained their distance from the Lebanese right through the second quarter and a triple and basket from Rashid Al Zaabi gave them a six-point cushion at 44-38 by the half-time hooter.
Hoops showed signs of making one final surge in the fourth quarter when they outscored the hosts 21-20, thanks largely to nine points from Carey Williams and another five from Jamieson. The visitors still trailed by five points at 59-64 with all to fight for in the fourth and final quarter.
Much of the drama belonged to the last quarter when Hoopss coach Omar Hassino asked his players to walk off court contesting a technical foul by referee Hussain Al Beloushi on Brent Ragsdale (192-G-86, college: Kennesaw St.) with 7.42 minutes remaining.
However, better sense prevailed as two minutes later the Hoops players returned to resume play on orders from Hoops President Jasim Kanso.
Al Shabab went on a brisk scoring spree with Omar Al Amri sinking in a couple of triples to take the match away from Hoops. They were served well by their foreign import Joseph Taylor, who went on to top the scoring chart for the winners with a match high 24 points.
Earlier, Barako Bull from the Philippines had to settle for fourth place in the competition when Kuwaits Al Sahel secured an 84-76 win in the play-off match. Leading the charge for Al Sahel was topscorer Anthony Green with 32 points, well supported by Abdullah Al Shammaris 16 points. As usual, Barako Bull was served by free scoring Michael Singletary with 24 points.
Esmail Al Gergawi, President, UAE Basketball Association (UAE BA) was joined by Mattar Surour, Tournament Vice President and Awad Sami, the Tournament Director at the presentation of the trophy after the final.
RESULTS Final: Al Shabab bt Hoops Lebanon 90-75.
Third place: Al Sahel Kuwait bt Barako Bull Philippines 84-76.
