WABA League: Mahram topple Duhok - Jan 27, 2012

Mahram registered the second win in Group B of WABA League. The Iranian team held off Duhok to stay on top of the standings. Nikoloz Tskitishvili (212-C/F-83) stepped up with impressive 29 points and 14 rebounds to pace Mahram. Duhok suffered the third loss in a row.
Mahram and Duhok stayed neck and neck throughout intense first quarter. The Iranian side eked out a 26:24 lead after ten minutes. Mahram maintained the lead throughout the second quarter. However Duhok stayed within a striking distance. Mahram went into the locker room up by just 3 points 45:42. The margin grew in the third term. Mahram gradually boosted the gap taking a 67:60 advantage with one quarter to go. The Iranian side went on a 15:5 rally at the start of the final period and raced to the victory at the end. Hamed Afagh (190-G-83) had 19 points, while Samad Nik Khahbahrami (198-F-83) added 14 points for the winning side. Ali Hamad (193-F-86) and Mohammed Mahdi (205-F/C-80) answered with 16 points each for Duhok. Chamberlain Oguchi had 12 points in the loss.

The game had a very big importance for third-ranked Al Karkh as it allowed them to take a leadership position. Al Karkh smashed bottom-ranked Al Nasiriyah at home 131-71. Host teams show no mercy winning all games. The most interesting game was a derby match between two local teams from Baghdad: Al Kahraba (#3) and Al Nift (#5). Al Kahraba (3-0) won against visiting Al Nift (1-2) 82-76. Al Kahraba have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to second place, which they share with Al Karkh and Nift Al-Janoub. The most surprising game was a loss of Al Mina (1-1) in Basra on Friday night. Hosts were defeated by Al Nift (1-1) 81-76. Al Nift's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Baghdad to the arena Al Kahraba.
