Shohei Kikuchi (190-F/G-85) delivered 18 points to pace the charge. Hong Kong slipped at 1-2 record after the defeat. The hosts got to the brave start to the game. They poured in 26 points in the first frame taking a 4-point lead. Japan stopped the bleeding in the second period. They started the claw their way back into the contest however Hong Kong did not allow the visitors to surge ahead. The scoreboard read 42:39 for Hong Kong at halftime. But the third quarter turned things around. Japan went ballistic offensively as they accounted for 31 points leaving Hong Kong far behind. The visitors entered the fourth frame leading by as many as 18 points. Hong Kong could not come back to life and had to surrender at the end. Kenta Hirose (193-G-85) scored 16 points for Japan. Kosuke Takeuchi (205-C/F-85) and Yusuke Okada (185-G-84) delivered 12 points apiece in the win. Fong Shing Yee (191-F-83) responded with game-high 21 points and 12 boards. Hong Kong welcomed 2009 East Asian Games. The basketball team have already played two games at the start of the championship. Hong Kong split the games in preliminary Group B.
They were opposed by Guam in the first encounter. The hosts enjoyed the initiative early and grabbed a 19:14 lead after ten minutes of action. Guam however switched the gear in the second quarter and kept up the tempo. They fired 24 points to stay within five points at halftime [read more]

They were opposed by Guam in the first encounter. The hosts enjoyed the initiative early and grabbed a 19:14 lead after ten minutes of action. Guam however switched the gear in the second quarter and kept up the tempo. They fired 24 points to stay within five points at halftime. Poon Chiho (182-G-81) triggered the decisive rally from the home team. Hong Kong exploded with 30 points in the third term and ran away to a 22-point buffer before the fourth term. The margin proved insurmountable for Guam and they had to surrender at the end. Poon Chiho knocked down 20 points for Hong Kong. Fong Shing Yee (191-F-83) delivered 14 points and 9 boards in the win. Seve Susuico responded with 14 points and 9 boards for Guam. Vincent Estella (186-G) finished with 12 points in the loss. Hong Kong however could not keep up the winning attitude. They suffered a 67:108 loss against South Korea in the second round of action. Korea did not give a single chance for the hosts. They marched to a 31:15 lead at the end of the opening frame. More to come as South Korea managed to balloon the gap to as many as 22 points at the interval. Korea continued to fire heavily as they secured an 80:51 lead after three quarters of action. Park Chan Hee (191-G-87) led South Korea to a comprehensive victory at the end. He finished with 25 points, 8 boards and 6 assists in the win. Park Hyung-Chul (193-G-87) delivered 17 points for Korea. Lo Yi Ting (178-G-87) responded with 21 points for Hong Kong. Fong Shing Yee had 13 points and 9 boards in the loss.

In the opener of the group China defeated Hong Kong 99:64 in Nagoya, Japan. Zhou Peng led China with 23 points and 5 rebounds. Zhang Nan had 16 points and 4 rebounds, while Su Wei had 14 points and 8 rebounds.

Hong Kong opened an offensive first half with 35:28 as the teams showed an excellent percentage from the field. Mongolia bounced back with 18-14 in the second frame to reduce to 49:46 at the halftime. Hong Kong pushed the tempo for good in the third period as the team rolled over the opponent 23-18 and added 20-9 in the last quarter. Li Wai Lun (195-F-81) led the winners with 20 points, while Tam Waiyeung (194-F-82) had 17 points and 9 rebounds. Lau Chi Kin (181-G-79) ended up with 16 points and Poon Chiho brought his team 12 points. Zoljargal Namjildorj (202-C-87) top-scored for Mongolia with 22 points.
