B1 League Round 50 (Regular Season): Nagasaki lose to San-en NP

The Regular Season in B1 League is slowly approaching the end. But there may be still some important changes in the final standings in the last 10 rounds. The round was exceptionally exciting as three games ended with a tiny margin. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

Top ranked Velca (40-10) recorded its tenth loss in Nagasaki on Wednesday night. Hosts were defeated by fifth ranked NeoPhoenix (30-20) 103-97. It ended at the same time the six-game winning streak of Velca. The guests trailed by 2 points at the halftime before their 50-42 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. NeoPhoenix looked well-organized offensively handing out 29 assists. The best player for the winners was American forward Yante Maten (201-1996, college: Georgia) who scored 19 points and 6 rebounds (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field). American-Nigerian swingman David Nwaba (195-1993, college: Cal Poly) chipped in 15 points and 4 assists. NeoPhoenix's coach used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American Jarrell Brantley (201-1996, college: Charleston) produced 31 points for the hosts. San-en NP maintains fifth position with 30-20 record, which they share with Sendai 89ers. Nagasaki at the other side still keeps top place with ten games lost. San-en NP is looking forward to face Sendai 89ers (#6) at home in the next round. Nagasaki will play against Hokkaido L. (#5) in Sapporo and is hoping to win this game.
Important game to mention about took place in Tochigi. Fourth ranked Alvark (33-17) saved a 2-point victory on the road edging top-ranked Tochigi Brex (37-13) 84-82 on Wednesday evening. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Tochigi Brex. Spanish Sebastian Saiz (205-1994, college: Ole Miss) orchestrated the victory by scoring 19 points and 9 rebounds. Kai Toews contributed with 18 points and 9 assists for the winners. American guard DJ Newbill (193-1992, college: Penn State) replied with 26 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists for Tochigi Brex. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Alvark Tokyo have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain fourth position with 33-17 record. Defending champion Tochigi Brex still keeps top place with 13 games lost. Alvark Tokyo will play against Shimane SM (#8) at home in the next round. Tochigi Brex will play against Toyama G. (#13) and hopes to get back on the winning track.
A very close game took place in Saga between Ballooners and Sapporo. Seventh ranked Ballooners (26-24) got a very close home victory over 5th ranked Sapporo (31-19). Ballooners managed to escape with a 3-point win 79-76 on Wednesday evening. Tanner Groves scored 20 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists to lead the charge for the winners. Jahlil Okafor responded with 19 points and 9 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). Sapporo's coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total twelve players in this game, but that didn't help. Saga B. maintains seventh position with 26-24 record. Hokkaido L. lost third consecutive game. They keep the fifth place with 19 games lost. Saga B. will meet at home Kyoto H. (#11) in the next round. Hokkaido L. will play against the league's leader Nagasaki (#1) and will have a slim chance for a victory.

Rest of the games of round 50 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
Sendai 89ers crushed Chiba in a road game 104-80. Chiba Jets beat Koshigaya A. at home 92-78. Gunma CT won against Ibaraki R. on the opponent's court 80-66. Kyoto H. managed to outperform Nagoya DD in a home game 90-82. Shiga L-Stars managed to beat FE Nagoya on the road 72-69. Ryukyu defeated Osaka E. on its own court 74-71. Hiroshima D. was beaten by Sea Horses M. in Kariya 93-84. Shimane SM was destroyed by Toyama G. at home 68-98. Kawasaki unfortunately lost to Sunrockers Sh. on the opponent's court 73-87. Yokohama BC managed to beat Akita NH in a home game 92-74.
The best stats of 50th round was 23 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists by Yannick Wetzell of Akita NH.




Chiba - Sendai 89ers 80-104

There was no surprise when 10th ranked Chiba (16-34) was crushed at home by sixth ranked 89ers (30-20) 104-80 on Wednesday. The game was mostly controlled by Sendai 89ers. Chiba managed to win fourth quarter 24-15. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. 89ers looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. American guard Jarrett Culver (198-1999, college: Texas Tech) scored 26 points and 7 assists to lead the charge for the winners and Lebanese guard Sergio El Darwich (194-1996, college: Maine) chipped in 18 points and 4 assists during the contest. Four 89ers players scored in double figures. American forward Trey Porter (210-1996, college: Nevada, agency: JCK Sports Group) responded with a double-double by scoring 30 points and 10 rebounds and his fellow American import center Dererk Pardon (203-1996, college: Northwestern) scored 11 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Sendai 89ers moved-up to fifth place, which they share with San-en NP. Chiba lost fourth consecutive game. Newly promoted team keeps the tenth position with 34 games lost. They share it with FE Nagoya. Sendai 89ers will meet San-en NP (#5) in the next round. Chiba will play against Yokohama BC (#8) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Ibaraki R. managed to win second period 20-16. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Thunders looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. B-Corsairs looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. American center Kaleb Tarczewski (212-1993, college: Arizona) scored 9 points and 15 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and the other American import Gary Clark (198-1994, college: Cincinnati) chipped in 12 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists during the contest.
