LBL Round 19: Beirut Club keep a leadership position

Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

The game had a very big importance for second-ranked Beirut Club as it allowed them to take a leadership position. Beirut Club smashed 9th ranked Homentmen at home 123-56. Beirut Club shot 62.5 percent from the field and made 16-of-16 free shots (100 percent !!!) during the game. Beirut Club forced 22 Homentmen turnovers and outrebounded them 34-22 including 25 on the defensive glass. They shot the lights out from three sinking 17 long-distance shots on high 56.7 percentage. Beirut Club looked well-organized offensively handing out 36 assists comparing to just 11 passes made by Homentmen's players. Worth to mention a great performance of the former international guard Sergio El Darwich (193-1996, college: Maine) who helped to win the game recording 21 points, 5 rebounds, 8 assists and 4 steals. The former international forward Gerard Hadidian (201-1995, college: Lake Land) contributed with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. Serouj Avedissian answered with 27 points for Homentmen. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Beirut Club (13-2) have an impressive series of seven victories in a row. As mentioned above they are at the top of the standings, which they share with Sagesse. Homentmen at the other side keeps the ninth place with 13 games lost. Homentmen will have a break next week, which should allow them to rest in order to get back on the winning path. Beirut Club will try to continue on its current victory against second ranked Sagesse. It will be extra interesting game as Sagesse is their local rival from Beirut.
The game in Zahle supposed to be also worth to mention about. Fourth ranked Dynamo (12-4) played at the court of 8th ranked Atlas (4-11). Dynamo smashed Atlas 96-59. It was a great evening for international power forward Mohamad Haidar (203-1990, college: Michigan Tech) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 24 points and 17 rebounds. Jimmy Salem helped adding 25 points and 11 rebounds. At the losing side the former international guard Bassel Harfouch (193-1993, college: Alcorn St.) responded with a double-double by scoring 19 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists. Atlas' coach Georges Dagher gave up on the game allowing to play ten players seeing no chance for a win. Newly promoted Dynamo maintains fourth place with 12-4 record. Atlas lost their third game in a row. They keep the eighth position with 11 games lost. Dynamo's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Beirut to the arena .

Other games in round 19 were not that significant. Bottom-ranked Anibal was smashed by Hoops on the road 99-57. Al Riyadi destroyed Byblos on its own court 102-66. Beirut Club outscored Anibal in a road game 88-68. Sagesse rolled over Anibal at home 83-56.
The most impressive performance of 19th round was 23 points and 13 rebounds by Georges El Beyrouty of Sagesse.



Hoops - Anibal 99-57

No shocking result in a game when seventh ranked Hoops (8-7) crushed bottom-ranked Anibal (1-15) in Beirut 99-57. Hoops dominated down low during the game scoring 62 of its points in the paint compared to Anibal's 28. They outrebounded Anibal 51-23 including a 13-2 advantage in offensive rebounds. Hoops players were unselfish on offense dishing 28 assists comparing to just 13 passes made by Anibal's players. It was a great evening for guard Georges Choueiry (184-1995) who led his team to a victory scoring 30 points (on 11-of-14 shooting from the field). The former international swingman Khalil Aoun (195-1990) helped adding 10 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists. At the losing side American point guard Hamoudy Turfe (183, college: UM-Dearborn) responded with 26 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals and Bechara Saba scored 8 points and 6 rebounds. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Hoops moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Champville. Anibal lost their seventh game in a row. They stay at the bottom position with 15 games lost. Hoops' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Beirut Al Riyadi.

Very expected game when 10th ranked Byblos (2-14) were smashed by third ranked Al Riyadi (12-2) in Beirut 102-66. Al Riyadi dominated down low during the game scoring 64 of its points in the paint compared to Byblos' 40. Al Riyadi forced 22 Byblos turnovers and outrebounded them 54-23 including a 20-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 26 assists. It was a great evening for the former international swingman Jean Abdel Nour (198-1983) who led his team to a victory scoring 17 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. The former international guard Amir Saoud (186-1991) helped adding 21 points and 5 assists. Al Riyadi's coach felt very confident that he used 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. At the losing side Georges Souaid responded with 23 points and forward William Sawan (201-1998) produced a double-double by scoring 10 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists. Five Al Riyadi and four Byblos players scored in double figures. The victory was the seventh consecutive win for Al Riyadi. Defending champion maintains third place with 12-2 record behind leader Beirut Club. Byblos at the other side keep the tenth position with 14 games lost.
