Japan victoriously opened their 2025 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers campaign. They overcame Guam in Tokyo today. Yuki Kawamura (172-G-2001) scored 15 points to lead the hosts.
Japan led by as many as 5 points after the opening frame. But Guam responded with a 24-18 rally in the second period to eke out a 36-35 halftime lead. Japan ignited a 20-8 surge in the third period to regain the lead. They followed with a 22-12 run in the fourth quarter to ice the victory. Makoto Hiejima (191-G/F-1990) nailed 12 points for the home side. Earnest Ross (198-G-1991, college: Missouri, agency: Haylett Sports) replied with 14 points, while Jericho Cruz (182-G-1990) and Tai Wesley (201-F-1986, college: Utah St.) provided 12 points each for Guam.
