Chinese Taipei booked the last ticket to the 2021 Fiba Asia Cup - Aug 28, 2021
Chinese Taipei - Guam 85:77 Chinese Taipei booked the last ticket to the 2021 Fiba Asia Cup beating Guam in game 2 85-77. After a 5-point loss in the opener, Chinese Taipei managed to post an eight-point victory. Guam grabbed a 22-16 lead at the start, while Chinese Taipei took control in the rest of the game. They answered with a 27-19 surge in the second frame and added a 26-22 rally in the third period. At the end Lin Ting-Chien (99) and Wei Han Lin scored the last points for their team to advance for the Fiba Asia Cup. Lin Ting-Chien top-scored for the winners with 26 points and Long-Mao Hu (198-SF-92, college: Chaminade) netted 16. Ying-Chun Chen (182-PG-93, college: Liberty) posted 14, whilst Te-Wei Lee (201-C-91) netted 11. Mark Johnson (198-F-92) replied with 18 points in the losing effort. China beat Chinese Taipei again to close out Asia Cup qualifiers - Jun 20, 2021
China beat Chinese Taipei 91-73 in their last FIBA Asia Cup qualifier game in the Philippines on Sunday, finishing the tournament with four straight wins. China's victory over Japan on Saturday had already secured the team a spot in the coming Asia Cup that will start on August 17 in Indonesia. However, coach Du Feng did not want to give up the last game. Though he did not send Zhou Qi or Ren Junfei to the court, Du remained demanding of his players in Sunday's game. Twenty-one-year-old Zhenlin Zhang (207-SF-99, college: Tulane) was even criticized for his underperformance on the floor. China's players were in the best shooting form in the first half, but Zhou Peng (206-SF-89)'s tough 2-plus-1 play, Wu Qian's 3-pointer, plus Shaojie Wang (208-C-96)'s last-second floater gave their team a 12-point lead (28-16) in the first quarter. Chinese Taipei enhanced their charging of the paint in the second quarter and narrowing the deficit down to 10 points (49-39). China showed more aggressiveness in the second half as Zhou Peng and Hu Mingxuan continued to hurt the opponents' defense by drawing fouls. By the time Zhou Peng finished an alley-oop in the fourth quarter, China's lead had grown to 26 points. That's when the game was long gone for the Chinese Taipei team. Zhou Peng scored a game-high 21 points, six rebounds and four assists. Zijie Shen (210-C-97) had a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds. China will fly to Canada directly from the Philippines to prepare for the Tokyo Olympic basketball qualifying tournament in Victoria. They will meet Greece and Canada in the competitions. The Philippines got another one over South Korea, 82-77, to finish the 2021 Fiba Asia Cup Qualifiers with a perfect record Sunday at Angeles University Foundation in Clark, Pampanga. Gilas Pilipinas wrapped up its campaign with a 6-0 slate while South Korea finished with a 4-2 card in Group A. The Fiba Asia Cup is set from Aug. 16 to 28 in Jakarta, Indonesia. South Korea continuously nipped at the heels of the Philippines in the fourth quarter with Gilas eventually taking the win through sheer grit and tenacity. Ricardo Ratliffe (203-F-89, college: Missouri) split his free throws with 55 seconds left in the game to put Korea behind, 77-75, but Justine Baltazar answered on the other end taking home Will Navarro's dish to flush down a one-hander for the Philippines' 79-75 buffer with half a minute left. The Philippines' widest leeway in the fourth was a 75-69 lead courtesy of Dwight Ramos (193-G-98)' three-pointer with 3:44 to play. Gilas head coach Tab Baldwin said his team's progress in the qualifiers is just at where he wants it to be especially with a young squad learning how to play in the end-game. 'There are times, particularly with a young team when we're still in a learning curve when I think it's important that the players learn how to figure things out themselves. And we are very much in that stage, you know, these guys have got to develop a confidence in themselves that that deserves to be there and so they have to figure out problems themselves,' said Baldwin. 'I'm not too worried about the score at the beginning of the game I'm much more concerned about the score at the end of the game, and I've seen in today's today's basketball world too many big leads early in games disappear. In fact, I don't trust the big lead if it happens to be in our favor, so I don't get too concerned about early deficits or big leads, we just try and play through it.' Dwight Ramos, who's been the Philippines' best player, finished with 19 points on 5-of-9 shooting from deep with five assists and two steals. Jordan Heading (188-G-96, college: CBU), Kai Sotto (218-C-02), and RJ Abarrientos all had 10 points apiece to help Gilas. Ra had 20 points, 13 rebounds, and two blocks to lead South Korea. CLARK CITY (Philippines) - Undefeated China comes from behind riding the strong performance of their frontcourt to beat a sharpshooting Japan squad 90-84. In the previous matchup, Japan fell behind 20-12 in the first quarter to China and the slow start was too big for them to overcome. Here in the rematch, they made sure to start with urgency and jumped out to a 29-21 lead in the first 10 minutes. Coach Julio Lamas (agency: Duran International )' squad shot the lights out, especially from the three-point range where they went 14-35. However, coach De Feng's team was able to counter with some sharpshooting of their own, going for 7-15 from downtown. China then went to their advantage of size and physicality in the fourth quarter to build up a 17-4 run to close out the game and complete a come-from-behind win. Zhao Yanhao (194-SG-97) made his only three-pointer in the game to give China a 7-point advantage with one minute left to seal the deal for their third straight win. The new additions for each team made their presences felt, adding on to what was already a competitive clash between the two teams. Ryan Rossiter (204-F-89, college: Siena) continues to impress in a Japan national team jersey, posting an all-around performance of 15 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals. He's been key to connecting the half-court play for Japan and should continue to be moving forward. China also finally enjoyed the presence of big man Qi Zhou (217-C-96), who immediately went to work. He continuously applied pressure on Japan's frontcourt to record 18 points on 7-11 shooting with 12 rebounds and 2 blocks. Yuki Togashi (170-PG-93) was also impressive for Japan, scoring a team-high 17 points on just 9 shots. The diminutive point guard provided the spark that the team needed late in the game, even though it wasn't enough. From China, another outstanding performer was fellow big man Zijie Shen (210-C-97). He had left the previous game against Chinese Taipei with what seemed like an injury but came back strong and healthy for this matchup to post a solid 13 points while missing only one shot. China remains undefeated in Group B with 3 wins, while Japan is now at 2-2. Courtesy of FIBA Korea youngsters flourish in win over Thailand ahead of rematch with Gilas - Jun 19, 2021
CLARK CITY (Philippines) - Korea dominates Thailand off the promising performance of youngsters ahead of rematch with the Philippines, 120-53. Thailand managed to keep the game close during the first quarter, but that only seemed to buy them some time before Korea flipped the switch. As Korea started bringing in their youngsters, they were able to start attacking in the open court and expand the lead. From the tail end of the first quarter until the majority of the second, Korea blasted away with a 31-0 run which more or less gave them the cushion that they needed to last throughout the entire game. Coach Sang Hyun Cho was able to rest his veterans for the most part of the game, allowing the rising stars of the team to get their time to shine. 22-year-old Yungi Ha (203-C-99) led the team with 34 points, only missing two of his attempts which included a lot of big-time throwdowns. 20-year-old Hyunjung Lee (201-G/F-00) continues to stuff the stat sheet, this game recording 20 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals, and 2 blocks. The lone teenager of the group, Yeo JunSeok, added 23 points and 6 boards. 23-year-old Hongseok Yang (199-F-97) was the sharpshooter for Korea today with 19 points on 5 three-pointers. Chitchai Ananti (194-G/F-90) made his first Qualifiers appearance in this game for Thailand and recorded 11 points. Meanwhile, Wattana Suttisin (183-SG-85) led Thailand with 12 points. Thailand now drops to 0-5 with one game left against Indonesia tomorrow. Korea improves to 4-1 ahead of their rematch against the Philippines. Courtesy of FIBA Gilas Pilipinas demolishes Indonesia, 76-51 - Jun 18, 2021
Gilas Pilipinas bucked a sluggish start but started to get its game going with an energetic performance in the second half before putting away Indonesia, 76-51, in the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers on Friday night at the Angeles University Foundation gym in Pampanga. Naturalized Filipino Angelo Kouame shackled Lester Prosper (210-C-88, college: Old Westbury), Indonesia's primary option on offense, and Dwight Ramos (193-G-98) practically did a little bit of everything - from scoring to quarterbacking to diving for loose balls - as the energy they generated was picked up by the rest of the squad. The Philippines' latest win, its fifth in as many games in Group A, kept the team's high spirits for its final game against South Korea on Sunday night. Gilas Pilipinas is already guaranteed a spot in the World Cup qualifying event to be held in Indonesia in August following its dramatic victory over South Korea on Wednesday. With or without any bearing, the Filipinos are expected to play for pride once they meet their long-time rivals on Sunday. Ramos had a double-double performance of 10 points and 12 rebounds, but hardly saw action in the second half as Gilas head coach Tab Baldwin started to utilize the other players like Rhon Jhay Abarrientos (181-G-99), Javier Gomez De Liano (195-SG-98) and Lebron Lopez. Justine Baltazar (208-PF-97) went a rebound shy of posting a double-double performance of his own as he ended up with 11 points and nine boards. Kouame also tallied 11 points. It was the Philippines' effort in rebounding which proved to be the biggest difference as the Filipinos clobbered the Indonesians in the battle of the boards, 58-31, resulting in 23 second chance points for Gilas Pilipinas compared to only five for their rivals. The Philippines' size advantage also played a big factor in the one-sided win as the Filipinos grabbed 20 more offensive rebounds, 26-6. The Filipinos also forced the Indonesians into making 17 turnovers in the game and limited them to a dismal 31.5 percent (17-of-54) shooting from the field. Rhon Jhay Abarrientos contributed nine markers coming off the bench while Kai Sotto (218-C-02) added seven points and seven boards in 18 minutes of action. Prosper, Indonesia's naturalized player, led the way for his team with 22 points, but was hardly efficient when Kouame was guarding him. Courtesy of: manilatimes.net Taiwan falls to Japan in FIBA Asian basketball qualifiers bubble - Jun 18, 2021
The Taiwan national men's basketball team fell to Asian heavyweight Japan by 37 points on Friday in their matchup in the Philippines in the third and final window of the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers. After falling to China by close to 50 points a day earlier, Taiwan was defeated by Japan 98-61 at Angeles City Foundation Gym in Pampangas, the Philippines in the third qualifying round, being held in a bubble to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The loss makes it unlikely Taiwan will secure one of the top two spots in its four-team qualifying group needed to book an automatic ticket to the Asia Cup, being held in Jakarta in mid-August, though there is still a path for Taiwan to make the tournament in Indonesia. What the game Friday showed, however, is that this relatively younger team of semi-pro Super Basketball League and collegiate players has a long way to go to be competitive with the better teams in Asia. Japan ran off to a 14-0 start behind Japanese naturalized 6-foot-9 power forward Gavin Edwards (206-F/C-88, college: UConn) and some sloppy passing and turnovers by Taiwan. Taiwan rallied, however, after inserting Senegalese 6-foot-2 forward Mohammad Al Bachir Gadiaga, known locally as Abbasi, and 6-foot-8 center Jonah Morrison (203-F-00). The two sparked a more up tempo style, and with Edwards getting a breather, Taiwan rallied to within three at 33-30 with about four minutes left in the first half, forcing Japan to call a timeout. Edwards returned and Japan went on a 19-8 run of its own to take a 52-38 lead at halftime, and Taiwan fell apart in the second half, shooting poorly and struggling on defense as the Japanese coasted to victory. The 33-year-old Edwards, who played for the Malaysian Westports KL Dragons in the regional ASEAN Basketball League from 2012 to 2013 before settling in Japan to play for teams in the country's professional B.LEAGUE, led all scorers with 21 points. Taiwan's assistant coach Cheng Chih-Lung said after the game that the team was sapped of its energy in the second half because of having to play two games against strong teams within 24 hours. "In the first half we fought hard and I think we saw hope. I also hope that the players can take this experience back to their schools and respective teams, and motivate others," Cheng said. The loss gave Taiwan a 1-3 record in Group B, which also includes Malaysia, Japan, and China. A total of 24 teams are competing in six groups, with the top two teams in each group qualifying for the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup. The six third-place teams play in a last qualifying tournament, with the top four teams also heading to Indonesia. The tournament has been badly disrupted by COVID-19. China and Taiwan could lose qualifying points for not playing in the second qualifying window in November 2020, and Malaysia is sitting out this round in the Philippines, creating uncertainty over the group's standings. Still, China and Japan should take the top two spots, and Taiwan will likely finish third, giving it a final chance to qualify for the Asia Cup tournament. China smashed Chinese Taipei 115-66 to achieve their second straight win in the FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers in the Philippines on Thursday. Each of the team's 12-man rotation scored in the game. Qian Wu (188-PG-94), Wenbo Lu (194-SG-89) and Chuanxing Liu (222-C-97) all reached team-high 16 points. China made the most of its advantage in the paint, with Zijie Shen (210-C-97) and Zhou Peng consecutively attacking the rim going into the duel en route to a 16-4 lead. Lu scored nine points off the bench as China extended its margin to 37-16 in the first quarter. Standing 2.25 meters tall, center Liu was too big for the Chinese Taipei players to stop. He made his impact felt on both ends, scoring six points and hauling down seven rebounds in less than five minutes, as China led 67-32 before the half break. Chinese Taipei began to find its shooting touch beyond the arc from there, burying three 3-pointers in a row late in the third quarter, but its sparse offense could not truly put a scare into China's advantageous position. With a 44-point lead heading into the final quarter, China did a routine job in securing a lop-sided victory. With four minutes on the clock, China stretched its advantage to 50 points on Mingxuan Hu (191-PG-98)'s alley-loop layup. Unfortunately for China, Shen was injured falling to the floor when he tried to block a shot in the second quarter. He had to be helped off the court by teammates, and didn't return to the floor afterwards. Ya-Hsuan Hsieh (98) was the only highlight in Chinese Taipei offense, finishing at game-high 25 points by making seven of nine triple attempts. With one day off, China will meet Japan again on Saturday after winning their first clash 66-57 on Wednesday. South Korea booked its ticket to the Fiba Asia Cup after dismantling Indonesia, 104-81, in the the third window of the qualifiers on Thursday at Angeles University Foundation. The South Koreans bounced back after suffering an 81-78 heartbreak to host Philippines Wednesday night. The Filipinos have also advanced to the main tournament. Lee Seounghyun drilled a three-pointer to give the South Koreans a 12-0 lead early in the game and they never looked back. Ricardo Ratliffe (203-F-89, college: Missouri) finished with 23 points and seven rebounds to lead South Korea while Hyunjung Lee (201-G/F-00) missed out on a double-double with 21 points, nine boards, one steal, and two blocks. Lester Prosper (210-C-88, college: Old Westbury) lead the Indonesians with 25 points and 12 rebounds as he and his team fell to a 1-3 card, sitting a third seed in Group A. Courtesy of: inquirer.net China withstand late rally from Japan to win first of two clashes in Philippines bubble - Jun 16, 2021
China picks up an important victory in their first game of the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 Qualifiers over Japan, 66-57. Both teams started the game off a bit rusty on offense with China up ahead 32-20 at halftime in the first game of the bubble here in the Philippines. The pace picked up in the second half as both teams found their grooves on the offensive end. Japan started to find their stroke from long range, but China was able to pick apart their opponent's defense to widen the gap as the game progressed heading into the 4th quarter. Though Japan was down by 22 points at one point as their biggest deficit in the game, they able to claw their way back to within 7 points riding the sharpshooting of Makoto Hiejima (190-G/F-90). However, they were unable to close the gap after Gavin Edwards (206-F/C-88, college: UConn) fouled out of the game, leaving China to run away with the win. Zhou Peng (206-SF-89) had the hot hand for China, scoring 16 points on four three-pointers. Nonetheless, it was a balanced effort by the entire squad as 10 of the 12 players got on the scoreboard with at least 3 points to their name. Japan had three players score in double-digits led by Hiejima and Kosuke Kanamaru (193-F/G-89) who had 12 points each. Also worth noting is Guam's 112-66 win over Hong Kong. The win completed a two-game sweep for Guam over Hong Kong in the bubble in Jordan. All players scored for Guam in the blowout, led by Jericho Cruz (182-G-90)'s 20 points. Tai Wesley (201-F-86, college: Utah St.) also had a big game with 18 points, 15 rebounds, and 5 assists. Courtesy of: fiba.basketball Philippines breaks 8-year South Korean jinx with 81-78 thriller - Jun 16, 2021
THE Philippines smashed the South Korean jinx that went unbroken for eight years via an 81-78 thriller of a victory in the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Asia Cup Qualifiers on Wednesday night. There were no fans at the Angeles City Foundation Gym in Pampanga but millions on television witnessed how sweet-and cold-blooded-it was for Samjosef Belangel (177-G-99) to sink that buzzer-beating three-pointer that snapped the Filipinos' losing spell against the Koreans. The Philippines beat South Korea, 86-79, the last time in the Fiba Asia Cup semifinals at the MOA Arena in August 10, 2013. That Gilas Pilipinas squad which featured Jimmy Alapag (180-PG-77, college: CSUSB, agency: BIG), Jason Castro, Marc Pingris, naturalized player Marcus Douthit (210-C/F-80, college: Providence), among others, sent the Philippines back to the World Cup in Spain the year later. Wednesday night's victory also didn't border on beating the South Korean jinx alone, but on pushing the Philippines to the Asia Cup with Gilas Pilipinas's fourth straight victory. The country beat Indonesia, 100-75, and Thailand twice, 93-61 and 93-69, in the first window in February 2020. The Koreans went down to 2-1 won-lost in Group A. The FIBA Asia Cup 2021 will be held in Jakarta from August 17 to 29. Samjosef Belangel, who finished with 13 points, took only two shots from the three-point area and sank only one that mattered the most. He also had five rebounds and two assists. Naturalized Ange Kouame, who surprised everyone with his three-point shooting prowess, scored 12 points on 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc to add to his six rebounds and one. Carl Tamayo had 10 points also for the Filipinos. Kai Sotto didn't disappoint and also scored 11 points, despite having practiced with the team only one day because of 1 14-day home quarantine. The 7-foot-1 center held fort against South Korea's naturalized player Ricardo Ratliffe (203-F-89, college: Missouri) (Ra Gun-ah), and hauled down seven rebounds with two assists and one steal. Dwight Ramos (193-G-98) had 16 points on top of five rebounds, two steals and one block for Gilas Pilipinas. After Hyunjung Lee's game-tying triple, 78-all, Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tab Baldwin called for time with 2.3 seconds remaining to set things out. Dwight Ramos made the inbounds pass to Samjosef Belangel, who dribbled to the left side of the court before releasing the off-balanced buzzer-beater trey. The Filipinos will face the Indonesians on Friday at 6 p.m. It was a remarkable second half surge for the young Filipinos after a distastrous start-where Gilas trailed 16-33 deficit midway the second quarter. But Gilas unleashed a blazing 16-8 run capped by Ramos's game-tying layup that reversed a 36-44 halftime deficit to a 52-all with 3:01 to go in the third period. The Filipinos held on to a five-point lead at the most in the fourth quarter, but trailed anew late in the game, 70-75, with the Koreans in penalty in the final two minutes. Tamayo, Ramos and Justine Baltazar (208-PF-97) had one free throw each before Samjosef Belangel and Kouame scored a basket each to give Filipinos a 78-75 lead with only 10 seconds left in the game. Earlier on Wednesday, China picked up an important victory in its first at the qualifiers at the expense of Japan, 66-57. Iran's Arsalan Kazemi (200-SF-90, college: Oregon, agency: BIG) stuffed the stat sheet for a second straight game with 7 points, 13 rebounds, 2 assists, and three steals in the win. Abdel Gabar finished the game with 24 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists to once again star for his team. The team also got an energizing performance from Musab Tariq Kadi who impressed with 12 points and 6 offensive rebounds. A day after making history with a convincing 20-point victory over Hong Kong, Guam's men's national basketball team has done it again at the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 qualifiers in Amman, Jordan. This time, they beat Hong Kong 112-66 - a 46-point margin - and have guaranteed a third-place finish in Pool C, which besides Hong Kong and Guam also includes Australia and New Zealand. There were six pools of four teams each from Asia and Oceania. The top two from each pool automatically qualify to play in the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup. The six third-place finishers then play in a final qualifying tournament with the top four from that group joining the 12 already qualified for the 16-team 2021 FIBA Asia Cup. In the second game against Hong Kong, Guam's Curtis Washington won the jump ball, and everything after that too. Daren Hechanova (190-G-93, college: Peninsula JC) dished an assist to Joe Blas for the first points of the game, and it was off to the races. Guam went on a 23-5 run before a Hong Kong trey broke a drought that lasted almost four minutes. Guam coach E.J. Calvo started substitutions with 3 minutes left in the first quarter and Guam continued to dominate behind its big men. Tai Wesley (201-F-86, college: Utah St.) had 18 points and 15 rebounds in 27 minutes, Jericho Cruz (182-G-90) had 20 points and the 6-foot-10 Washington had 16 points, a steal and a 3-point jump shot. Everyone on the roster scored at least two points. Daren Hechanova had seven assists and Matthew Fegurgur (208-PF-01) had three blocked shots. "Mission accomplished. We made adjustments on defense and came together for an excellent game. Awesome contributions from our entire roster," said Calvo. "We will now be preparing for what comes next." What comes next goes down starting Aug. 12, when Guam will face the five other 3rd place finishers in the final tournament. If Guam finishes in the top four, it will make the 16-team FIBA Asia Cup Tournament. Courtesy of: guampdn.com Jordan beats Kazakhstan to earn spot in Fiba Asia Cup - Jun 14, 2021

Douglas Herring Jr. (191-G-87, college: Utica) guided Syria to a 67-56 win over Qatar Monday at Prince Hamza Hall in Amman to formally book its spot in the 2021 Fiba Asia Cup. The new naturalized player orchestrated the Syrians' 9-0 charge to break away from a 54-all deadlock in the final 5:07 to a 63-54 lead with 2:15 left to play. It was a memorable first win for Herring, who led the way with a near-triple-double showing with 16 points, nine rebounds, nine assists, and four steals. Rami Merjaneh (183-PG-83) corralled 14 points, two dimes, and two steals, while Kemal Canbolat (211-C-94) got 13 points, eight boards, and two assists in the victory. Syria actually ended up tied for second place in Group E with Saudi Arabia as both nations held identical 3-3 records. The Syrians, however, got the tiebreaker based on their head-to-head matchups. Syria won, 75-70 in overtime back in the first window in Feb. 23, 2020 in Jeddah, while Saudi Arabia only won by two points, 79-77 in overtime last Saturday. This makes Syria the seventh nation to earn its ticket after hosts Indonesia, Lebanon, Bahrain, Iran, Jordan, and Kazakhstan. Saudi Arabia, nonetheless, will still have a chance to make it through to the continental tilt as it gets one last chance in the second round of the qualifiers between the group third-placers just before the 2021 Fiba Asia Cup in August. Abdulrahman Saad (185-G/F-96) carried the fight for the Qataris with 22 points, seven rebounds, and four assists, but had little support from the rest of the team. Qatar ended the qualifiers with a 1-5 card, missing the continental tourney for the first time since 1999 in Fukuoka, Japan. Jericho Cruz (182-G-90) was an absolute star for Guam as it manhandled Hong Kong, 103-83, for its first win in Group C of the 2021 Fiba Asia Cup qualifiers on Sunday at Prince Hamza Hall in Amman. The NLEX guard was red hot from the get-go, scoring 14 of his 25 points in the opening frame as he shot 5-of-8 from deep alongside seven assists, four rebounds, and three steals. His fiery start helped Guam build an early 20-3 advantage that set the tone for the 20-point rout. Guam's breakthrough win hiked its record to an even 1-1, still behind Australia and New Zealand, both carrying identical 2-1 slates. The two also are not seeing action in the third window of the qualifiers. Hong Kong remains at the bottom of the group at 0-2. The two teams face off anew on Tuesday. Two-time NZ NBL Finals MVP Tai Wesley (201-F-86, college: Utah St.) also had a triumphant comeback from retirement with a near-triple-double of 25 points, 10 boards, and nine assists in the conquest. Former NLEX import Curtis Washington contributed 16 points, six rebounds, and three assists, while Daren Hechanova (190-G-93) took care of the boards, hauling down 15 rebounds to go with his four points and eight dimes. Guam shot a blistering 52-percent from the field, including 12-of-33 from beyond the arc to stretch its lead to its highest at 25, 90-65 with seven minutes remaining. Joe Blas also scored 12 points built on four threes, as University of the East product Christopher Conner (188-G-98) came off the bench to add nine points for Guam. Chi Lok Jolin So paced Hong Kong with 18 points and five rebounds, while Kin Fung Ray Chiu had 16 points and four boards in the defeat. IRAN became the fourth nation to book a ticket to the 2021 Fiba Asia Cup after decimating Qatar by 38 points, 84-46, on Saturday at Prince Hamza Hall in Amman. The victory pushed Team Melli to a 4-1 record, vaulting to the top spot of Group E of the qualifiers. Regardless of the result of its game against Saudi Arabia on Monday, the Iranians are already into the continental tilt due to its superior quotient. Iran, which won the silver medal back in 2017, joins Lebanon, Bahrain, and hosts Indonesia in the big dance come August. It was on its running shoes early on, sprinting on a 21-10 advantage to set the tone for the blowout as it finished with 23 fastbreak points, leaving Qatar, which only had two, in the dust. The rout was further boosted by the Iranians' accurate shooting clip, going on a 53-percent field goal shooting for the game for an emphatic start to their third window stretch. Samad Nikkhah Bahrami led the mugging with 16 points on 2-of-3 shooting from distance, to go with his three steals and two assists, while Mohammad Jamshidi (199-SF-91, agency: BIG) also orchestrated the attack with his 13 points and eight dimes. Behnam Yakhchali (194-SG-95, agency: BIG) also uncorked 11 points, four assists, and three rebounds as Iran hardly broke a sweat despite missing longtime center Hamed Haddadi. The bench was also a key factor for the Iranians as coach Mehran Shahintab got 32 points from his reserves. Meho Haracic was the lone bright spot for the Qataris with his 17 points and three rebounds off the bench. Momar Gueye (187-PG-97) and Ndoye Seydou (205-F) both scored seven each as they got a scoreless showing from mainstay Erfan Ali Saeed. Unfortunately, the loss booted out Qatar from contention as it fell to a 1-4 record ahead of its final assignment against Syria on Monday. SAUDI Arabia survived a late flurry from Syria to take a 79-77 overtime victory in the 2021 Fiba Asia Cup qualifiers Saturday at Prince Hamza Hall in Amman. Khalid Abdel-Gabar (188-G-90, college: Windsor) uncorked 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field, to go with six rebounds and four assists to boost Saudi Arabia's chances of clinching a spot in the continental tilt. The win allowed it to rise to a 3-2 record to move up to second place in Group E. But the win almost fell out of Saudi Arabia's grips as it allowed Syria to repeatedly rally back in the game. Nassir Abojalas (196-F-94) buried the go-ahead three with 1:04 left in the game to make it a 78-76 lead, but Mohammed AlMarwani (206-C-89) kept a glimmer of hope for the opposition as he split his charities with 12 ticks left to put Saudi Arabia up, 79-76. Amer Alsati split his freebies with five seconds left for Syria, while Jaber Nasser tried to run out the clock with a three. His miss, however, was grabbed by Douglas Herring Jr. (191-G-87, college: Utica) who still had a chance for a hail-mary but missed his prayer at the buzzer as Saudi Arabia escaped with the win. It mirrored the tense finish to the fourth period where the Syrians fought back from an eight-point deficit, 68-60, in the final 4:21 and even forced a 69-all deadlock courtesy of Anas Shaban's trey with 50 seconds left. After a couple of misses from both teams, Herring had one last shot to steal the game, but he missed the game-winning three as the buzzer sounded and the game went to overtime. Mathna Almarwani (186-SG-92) made only one of his 12 triples to notch 15 points, nine boards, and five assists, Mohammed AlMarwani added 14 points and seven rebounds, and Mohammed Alsuwailem (211-C-98) came off the bench and dropped a solid double-double with his 13 points, 13 rebounds, and five blocks for Saudi Arabia. The Saudi close out their assignment on Monday against group leader Iran, hopeful that the Syrians lose to Qatar to earn the top two berth. Herring fired 22 points, five rebounds, five assists, and two steals in his debut as Syria's naturalized player. Alsati chipped in 16 points and nine boards, while Anthouny Bakar had 13 points, five rebounds, and two assists in the loss.
