The Olympics is set to be held in Paris in the summer of 2024. Sports fans all over the world will be waiting to tune in and see their favourite athletes and sports stars compete to claim one of the prestigious medals. Basketball has been a part of the Olympics since way back in 1904. However, national teams must qualify if they want to secure a spot at this iconic sporting event. How will qualification for Olympic basketball work for Asian countries? Read this guide to find out. FIBA Basketball World Cup In 2020, the Olympic qualification route for basketball teams changed. Now, teams must qualify through their participation in the FIBA Basketball World Cup. The FIBA Basketball World Cup is a tournament for men’s senior national basketball teams. It’s held every four years and has taken place since the inaugural tournament in 1950. A total of 32 teams take part in the final stage of the tournament, with the USA currently holding the record for the highest number of tournament wins. How Does Qualification Work? Of the 32 teams that take part in the FIBA Basketball World Cup, only seven will go on to secure a place at the Olympics. However, this doesn’t mean that the top seven teams in the competition automatically qualify for the Olympics. Instead, the spots are distributed according to region. Two countries from both Europe and the Americas can qualify, as can one country from Asia, Africa and Oceania. There are also an extra four spots up for grabs. These are given to teams who manage to navigate the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament. Teams that missed out on qualification for the World Cup are entered into the Qualifying Tournament, with four top teams from different regions claiming a spot at the Olympics. Who Has Qualified Already? Basketball is a hugely popular sport. Millions of people tune in to see their favourite teams and use apps and platforms to check NBA odds and other major basketball leagues.. Sports fans wait with excitement to see who will qualify and represent their nation at the Olympics. Who has qualified so far? With the FIBA Basketball World Cup all but concluded, we already have seven qualified teams. France, as the host nation of the 2024 Olympics , qualifies automatically. Serbia and Germany are the other European teams to secure a place. Canada and the USA will represent the Americas, South Sudan for Africa, and Australia for Oceania. What about Asia? So far, Japan is the only Asian team to have qualified. However, there is still an opportunity for more Asian countries to qualify. Who could still secure a place in Paris? Who Could Still Qualify? While seven Olympic spots have been taken, we could see one more Asian team secure a spot for Paris in 2024. Iran and Jordan have already crashed out of qualification after disastrous campaigns. As have the Philippines, who played host to this year’s World Cup. China, a country that has long been passionate about basketball and has produced some truly incredible players, is hanging on to qualification by a thread. Who Could Win Gold? Japan’s basketball team has been on fire lately and will likely be the best hope for Asian gold at the Olympics. Current World Cup holders Spain failed to qualify after a dramatic loss to Canada , leaving the path to gold wide open. Could Japan clinch the top prize? We’ll just need to wait and see.
