Taiwan team B defeats Philippines on 2nd day of William Jones Cup- August 13, 2023
Taiwan's men's national basketball team B on Sunday overpowered visiting Team Philippines 89-79 with precision long range bombs, to secure the team's second consecutive victory in the William Jones Cup held in Taipei. The home squad, consisting of promising younger talent, shot 40 percent from the three point line with a combined 12 three pointers, compared with 6-28 or just 21 percent from the long range shooting of their opponents. The team established a 16 point lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Although the Philippines team cut the deficit to eight points in the fourth quarter with more physical play, they were unable to narrow the gap further. Taiwanese-American Adam Hinton (193-G) scored a game-high 17 points with 3 out of 7 from the three point line, while Senegalese forward/center Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba Sarr, who has said he plans to seek Taiwan citizenship to be able to play for the national team, grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Taiwan Team B overpowered Team Japan 85-59 on Saturday in the opening day of the 42nd William Jones Cup held at Taipei Heping Gymnasium. Sunday's victory was the second day a team from Taiwan defeated Team Philippines, represented by Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, a professional team from the Philippine Basketball Association. Taiwan's Team A, comprising the main roster of the national team, defeated Rain or Shine 98-79 on Saturday. The annual William Jones Cup international basketball invitational tournament hosted by Taiwan is being held this year after a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Launched in Taiwan in 1977, the tournament is named after British basketball promoter Renato William Jones, the first secretary-general of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), the sport's world governing body, a post he held for 44 years from 1932. |
