Philippines lift Jones Cup after win over Egypt - Jul 31, 2016
The Philippines clinched this year's William Jones Cup title yesterday with their seventh straight victory, a 80-61 triumph over Egypt, while South Korea staked their claim to second place by defeating Taiwan B 82-65 in the evening game at the Sinjhuang Gymnasium in New Taipei City. Taiwan A matched South Korea's 5-2 record when they topped US-Sacramento State 86-71 in the late game, setting up a showdown for second place at 7pm today. Defending champions Iran salvaged some pride by averting a strong challenge from Japan in a tight 73-65 win in the afternoon. Deflated by three consecutive losses to South Korea, Taiwan A and the Philippines, Iran are now looking to finish in the top three and face India on the final day of the tournament. Represented by Mighty Sports, the Philippines put the game away at the end of a surprisingly close contest when they lit up the board for 28 points in the final quarter, compared with Egypt's 14 down the stretch. The dynamic duo of Al Thornton (203-F-83, college: Florida St.) and Dewarick Spencer (193-G-82, college: Arkansas St., agency: Higher Vision Sports) were too much for their Middle Eastern opponents. Thornton, a former NBA player with the Los Angeles Clippers and the Golden State Warriors, dished out a double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds. Spencer, whose career has spanned several professional leagues in Europe and Asia, had 19 markers to go with three rebounds. Point guard Amr Sherif Abdelhalim starred for Egypt, netting a game-high 24 points and pulling down 12 rebounds as his team dropped to a 3-5 record. South Korea built on their huge 45-21 lead at halftime and coasted the rest of the way to down Taiwan B. Starters Heo Ung (183-G-93) and Lee Seoung-Hyun (197-F-82) led South Korea with 16 and 11 points respectively. For the hosts, American import John Florveus (211-C-90, college: Georgia) had his best day for the national junior squad getting ready for next year's Summer Universiade. The center from the University of Georgia Bulldogs took charge, bagging a team-high 17 points and 13 rebounds in a losing effort. Earlier, Iran went in with a 32-26 lead at halftime and had to fight for every possession against a tenacious Japan to close with an eight-point winning margin. Iran relied on the steady hands of starting trio Rouzbeh Arghavan, Behnam Yakhchali (197-SG-95) and Sajjad Mashayekhi (180-PG-94), who posted 19, 18 and 15 markers each. Point guard Yuki Togashi (170-PG-93) was the bright spot for Japan, making seven-of-11 field goals and going three-for-five three-pointers in his 25-point total. In related news, Japan advanced to the semi-finals of the FIBA U18 Asia Championship on Friday when they ousted Taiwan 77-71 in the Iranian capital, Tehran. The hosts gave the home fans plenty to celebrate by edging China 62-59, while South Korea prevailed over the Philippines and Lebanon saw off India in the other quarter-finals. | South Korea upset Iran in William Jones Cup battle - Jul 28, 2016
South Korea produced their best performance of the 38th William Jones Cup so far, defeating titleholders Iran 67-50 in a big upset yesterday, while Philippines-Mighty Sports notched another victory to sit atop the standings with four wins and no losses. Playing to their strengths, South Korea took the game to their opponents from the start with a fast pace and plenty of quick breaks. They went in at halftime with a 33-22 lead and Iran's starters could not keep up with South Korea's speedy transitions as the lead gradually widened in the second half. Starter Kim Sun-Hyung (187-G-88) and bench forwards Heo Il-Young (197-F-85) and Kim Jun-yi found their shooting range as they combined for 40 points. South Korea starting center Lee Seoung-Hyun (197-F-82) had a scintillating day, anchoring the defense and directing traffic in the lane. Lee contributed eight points, six rebounds and four assists. South Korea had the defense shadowing high-scoring Iran guard Behnam Yakhchali (197-SG-95) throughout. Despite the extra attention, Yakhchali found enough space to score 13 points, making three-for-six with his trademark three-pointers. However, the defense had him locked down in the final stretch and he was held scoreless in the fourth quarter. The upset cleared the way to the No. 1 position for Philippines-Mighty Sports, who took full advantage by crushing Japan 87-66. Four players scored in double digits, led by Zach Graham (198-G-89, college: Mississippi, agency: Pro Sports), who nailed 15 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Senegalese starting center Hamady N'diaye (212-C-87, college: Rutgers),, playing for Mighty Sports, impressed with another dominating display. He recorded eight points and 10 rebounds. Local reports have linked N'Diaye to the Super Basketball League after the big man's performances at the tournament. Japan forward Takanobu Nishikawa (195-F-92) top scored for the losers with 15 points, while starter Yuki Mitsuhara (198-F-89) hit a double-double, with 10 rebounds and 10 points. The Philippines gave Japan no chance from the tip-off, sinking 28 points in the first quarter on their way to a 50-21 lead at halftime. They eased off after the intermission, scoring 37 points in the second half for a 21-point final margin. In the early afternoon contest, Egypt marched to their second win with a 79-67 triumph over India, who have yet to taste victory in the competition. Starting guard Amr Sherif Abdelhalim and Ibrahim El Gammal had 19 and 16 points respectively in a big scoring haul for Egypt, with three other teammates also hitting double-digits for hoops. In yesterday's late game, US-Sacramento State thrashed Taiwan B 81-60. Today's games see Philippines-Mighty Sports looking to consolidate their position on top against India at 1pm, US-Sacramento State taking on Egypt at 3pm, Taiwan B Team hosting Japan at 5pm and Taiwan A playing Iran at 7pm. | Al Thornton scores 24 points to lead PH-Mighty Sports' rout of South Korea - Jul 26, 2016
Al Thornton (203-F-83, college: Florida St.) scored 24 points as he carried Philippines-Mighty Sports pummeled South Korea, 86-65, to notch its second straight victory in the 2016 William Jones Cup Monday in Taiwan. Thornton also had seven boards as he sank crucial baskets to pace PH-Mighty Sports which is now 2-0 in the tournament. Zach Graham (198-G-89, college: Mississippi, agency: Pro Sports) added 13 points, while Dewarick Spencer (193-G-82, college: Arkansas St., agency: Higher Vision Sports) contributed 12 markers. PH-Mighty Sports got off to a 12-5 start, but Korea made a run and took the lead, 18-17. However, Thornton exploded for five straight points, including a buzzer-beating trey, to give his team a 22-17 edge after the opening quarter. PH-Mighty Sports pulled away in the second quarter thanks to a 19-7 run that handed them a 41-24 lead. Halftime ended at 45-31 with PH-Mighty Sports led by Spencer's 10 points and Thornton's nine markers. Korea tried several times to come back, trimming its deficit to eight, 51-43, in the third quarter. But Mike Singletary converted an and one to bring PH-Mighty Sports' lead to 11, 54-43. They took a 59-45 cushion entering the final frame. Korea once again threatened for a serious run after coming within eight, 65-57, early in the fourth quarter. However, PH-Mighty Sports had another answer, with Thornton draining a triple and completing an and one play to push their lead, 71-57, and keep the Koreans at bay. Courtesy of: interaksyon.com
| Iran, Philippines top Jones Cup standings - Jul 26, 2016
Defending champions Iran showed no sign of letting up by defeating Egypt 74-65, while Philippines-Mighty Sports secured an impressive 88-69 victory over US-Sacramento State on Day 4 of the William Jones Cup at New Taipei City's Sinjhuang Gymnasium yesterday. Dominating the trench battle under the hoop, Iran's 2.13m-tall center Rouzbeh Arghavan (214-C/F-88, agency: Three Eye Sports) led his team with 24 points and nine rebounds, while Rasoul Mozafarivanani and Vahid Dalirzahan (199-SF-95) came off the bench to contribute 18 and 10 points respectively. Egypt gave last year's Jones Cup winners an early scare by going in front 22-17 in the first quarter, but Iran fought back to grab a one-point lead at half-time with the score at 40-39. Arghavan's hustling and strong team defense paid off as Iran went on a 19-5 run in the third quarter, but a tenacious Egypt team made their own stand to come within five points in the fourth quarter. In the end, Arghavan was the hero when, with the outcome still in doubt, he drained a long-range three-pointer in the final minutes to help his team pull away for a 74-65 triumph. Egypt's shooting guards Mouhanad Elsabagh and Amr Sherif Abdelhalim netted 17 points each, despite being on the losing end, but Egypt's team spirit is likely to pose a serious threat for their upcoming opponents. Philippines-Mighty Sports joined Iran atop the standings, with three wins each, by securing victory over US-Sacramento State by 19 points. Four Philippines players hit double-digit scores, led by point guard Dewarick Spencer (193-G-82, college: Arkansas St., agency: Higher Vision Sports) and center Vernon Macklin (208-F/C-86, college: Florida), with both scoring 14 points each. It was a closely fought contest in the first quarter, with the score level at 23-23, but the Philippines outpaced the US side to pile up 31 points in the second quarter and lead 54-35 at halftime - a lead they did not relinquish. Forward Grant Dressler (198-G/F) scored 16 points and Taiwanese-American Jeff Wu (188-G) scored 13 for US-Sacramento State in their 88-69 defeat to the Philippines. South Korea claimed their second win by thrashing India 97-55 in a one-sided affair. Heo Ung and Kang Sangjae scored 19 points and 15 points respectively to help South Koreans cruise to victory. The Indian team appeared tired from Monday night's tense battle against Taiwan Team A, in which they were tied at 66-66 and went into overtime. The hosts scored 10 points to India's four in overtime to secure a 76-70 triumph. In the domestic derby game last night, Taiwan B Team, the youth squad preparing for next year's Summer Universiade, were having the better of their seniors and were leading 71-63 in the fourth quarter, before Taiwanese-American Creighton Douglas (196-F-85) came off the bench to net a three-pointer and tie the game at 80-80 in the final minute of the game. However, Creighton turned from hero to villain a few seconds later, when he fouled Taiwan B Team forward Huang Tsung-Han (193-F-94). Referee awarded Huang three free-throws, of which he sank only one, but it was still enough for his side to edge Taiwan A Team by 81-80 in what fans called the most exciting game of the tournament so far. Results from Monday saw Japan downing Egypt 71-66, while Iran rolled over US-Sacramento State 70-59 and the Philippines-Mighty Sport prevailed over South Korea 86-65. Courtesy of: taipeitimes.com
