Korea wins 2009 Jones Cup women's competition - Jul. 17, 2009 
Korea's Shinhan Bank S-Birds manhandled Taiwan 67-48 Thursday night to win the 2009 Jones Cup women's competition champion, finishing the tournament 5-0.

Shinhan Bank was obviously a better team with a core of Ha Eun-joo and Jung Sun-min. Ha had 12 points and 8 rebounds in 14 minutes while Jung had a team-high 16 points as Korea pulled the game away early. Lee Youn-hoa also had 10 points.

Taiwan was led by Lee Wan-ting, who scored 14 on 7-of-9 shooting, but was hurt by 19 turnovers.

Japan beat Malaysia 85-40 to finish for third-place in the four-team tournament.

Jones Cup women - Taiwan to meet Korea for gold - Jul. 16, 2009 
Taiwan gets a sweet revenge in beating Japan 70-58 in the semifinal Wednesday and is scheduled to meet Korea's Shinhan Bank for women's gold of the 2009 William Jones Cup tournament.

Taiwan lost to Japan by one in the preliminary round after missing a pair of crucial free-throws with six seconds left. Before the rematch, Taiwan assistant coach Wang Ling vowed to beat Japan by 15 points.

In the first meeting Taiwan was left with only seven players due to injury. Five players were added from the World University NT to the roster Wednesday night.

Veteran center Cheng Hui-yun was the key man tonight. She played through injury and had 8 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks in less than 19 minutes.

Lee Wan-ting and Lin Chi-wen paced Taiwan with 12 points apiece. Lan Jui-yu had 11. Taiwan led 39-22 at halftime and led by as many as 20 points in the second half before Japan closed the gap.

Yoshie Sakurada had 22 points and Ryoko Utsumi had 20 for Japan.

Korea beat Malaysia 84-65 to stay undefeated in the tournament. Kim Youn-joo scored a team-high 14 points, including three threes, to go with 7 rebounds and 4 assists.
Teo Woon-yuen led Malaysia with 14 points and R. Kalamathi had 13 and 8.


The end of the Preliminary Round - Jul. 15, 2009 
Three days are over at the Sinjhuang Stadium in Taipei County. Four teams finished the Preliminary Round and get ready for the Semifinal clashes.
South Korea overpower Taiwan in the last day of the Preliminary Round. South Korea improved to 3-0 record after 67:51 victory, while Taiwan dropped to 1-2. The winners took the lead after the opening quarter 19:11 and increased to 35:21 at the halftime. South Korea did not slow down in the second half and led the game to the third straight win. Lin Chi Wen (186-C-83) brought 15 points in the losing effort.
Japan defeated Malaysia 87:43 to finish Preliminary Round second with 2-1 record. The Japanese team did not have any difficulties in the game taking the lead from the beginning. Even after two tough games, Japan looked fresher and dominated the court. R Kalaimathi (185-90) ended up with 12 points in the losing case.
July 15th will be the start of the Semifinals in William Jones Cup women's competition. The top team South Korea will face Malaysia, while Japan will take on Taiwan. The winners of the games will clash on the Final game on July 16th.


Jones Cup women - Missed free-throws cost Taiwan dearly - Jul. 13, 2009 
Ma Yi-hung missed two free-throws with 6.4 seconds to go as Taiwan lost a 61-60 heartbreaker to Japan Monday while Korea routed Malaysia 107-54 to go 2-0 in the four-team tournament.

Taiwan and Japan engaged in a seesaw battle all game long as expected. Chen Yi-feng's three-pointer with 83 seconds to go put Taiwan back on top 60-59 before Japan made the last push.

Yoshie Sakurada put Japan back on top on a fastbreak layup with 15.1 seconds remaining.

Ma Yi-hung, who twisted her right ankle one day before the tournament, was fouled on Taiwan's last possession and had the chance to decide the outcome. However, she missed them both as Japan pulled down the last rebound.

Sakurada led Japan with 18 point while Ryoko Utsumi had 16.

Taiwan was led by Liu Chun-yi's 23 points. Lin Hui-mei, who recorded the first triple-double in Jones Cup women's competition history last night, failed to score on 0-of-8 shooting.

Veteran center Cheng Hui-yun had 11 points and 7 rebounds.

Two-time WKBL champion Shinhan Bank had no problem handling Malaysia. Shinhan Bank had five players scoring in double-digit, headed by 19-year-old Kim Dan-bi's 19.

R. Kalamathi scored a team-high 17 points for Malaysia.

2009 Jones Cup. Day 1 - Jul. 13, 2009 
The Women 2009 Jones Cup competition has just started with four teams participating at the Sinjhuang Stadium in Taipei County. Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Malaysia will play for top team of the tournament. South African squad withdrew from the competition and left only four teams this year. South Africans refused to pay their own airfare, CTBA said, noting that it could only afford participating teams' accommodation and meal money.
In the first day Taiwan smashed Malaysia 102:51. It was an easy start of the home team that opened the game with 28:11 to take the full control of the game. Later on the favorites increased to 41:11, while the squads went to the lockers with 55:20 on the board. Taiwan continued to dominate the court in the second half and led the game to the first victory. Five players of the favorites reached the double-digits. Lin Chi-wen top-scored for the winners with 26 points and 10 rebounds, while Lin Hui collected 12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists to record the first triple-double in Jones Cup women's competition in 31 years.
Korea and Japan struggled hard as Korea produced 79:74 in the opener. Both teams started well and stayed close to each other in the first half. Japan grabbed 35:33 advantage heading into the third period, but could not keep the score for good. Jung Sun Min (186-F-74) top-scored for the winners with 23 points, 8 boards and 7 assists. Ryoko Utsumi (175-G-85) led Japan with 19 points.
Today Malaysia will face South Korea and Japan will take on Taiwan.
