SBL Round 3: Al Hilal keeps a leadership position

Al Hilal smashed Abha in Riyadh 102-53. Al Hilal dominated down low during the game scoring 62 of its points in the paint compared to Abha's 34. Al Hilal forced 26 Abha turnovers and outrebounded them 39-23 including a 29-15 advantage in defensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 27 assists comparing to just 10 passes made by Abha's players. The best player for the winners was American guard Antwan Scott (185-92, college: Colorado St., agency: Duran International) who had a double-double by scoring 37 points (!!!), 8 rebounds and 11 assists. The former international guard Nasser Alabsi (183-93) chipped in 16 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Al Hilal's coach Stratos Koukoulekidis felt very confident that he used 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. At the other side the best for losing team was Tunisian Hamza Aiouz (-89) who recorded 19 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. Abha will play next round against Al Salam trying to get back on the winning streak. Al Hilal will try to continue on its current victory against Al Wehda in Mecca.
Al Nahda (1-1) recorded a loss in Al Khobar. Hosts were rolled over by Ohod (3-0) 83-62. It was a good game for American guard Shane Rector (188-94, college: Utah St.) who led his team to a victory with 35 points (!!!) and 9 rebounds. Khalid Boukichou contributed with 15 points and 12 rebounds for the winners. Coach Fuad Abou Chakra's team controlled all game and the coach could let to play 10 players and allowed the starting five to rest. Abdulrahman Kurdi answered with 19 points and 8 rebounds for Al Nahda. Ohod will play against Al Ittihad (#5) in Jeddah in the next round. Al Nahda will play on the road against Al Hilal in Riyadh to get more than just one victory in their record.
A very close game took place in Riyadh between Al Nasr and Al Fateh. Al Nasr (3-0) got a very close home victory over Al Fateh (0-2). Al Nasr managed to escape with a 3-point win 80-77 on Monday evening. Host team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. It was a great evening for Khalid Abdel-Gabar who led his team to a victory scoring 30 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. The best for the losing side was Mohamed Harat with a double-double by scoring 39 points (!!!) and 13 rebounds (on 15-of-19 shooting from the field). Al Nasr will meet Duba Club (#12) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Al Fateh will play against Al Ansar and hopes to get finally their first victory.

Other games of round 3 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
Al Ahly crushed Al Salam in Jeddah 88-69. Al Ansar beat Al Wehda at home 67-61. Winless Duba Club was destroyed by Al Ittihad on the opponent's court 84-60.

There was no surprise in Al-Awamiyah where Al Salam (0-3) was crushed by Al Ahly (1-1) 88-69 on Monday. Al Ahly dominated down low during the game scoring 62 of its points in the paint compared to Al Salam's 36. They outrebounded Al Salam 52-29 including a 40-20 advantage in defensive rebounds. Al Ahly looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. It was a great evening for American forward Steve Taylor Jr. (206-93, college: Toledo) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 23 points, 18 rebounds and 7 assists. The former international Ali Shubayli (190-96) helped adding 20 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Five Al Ahly players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was American forward Nick Stover (198-93, college: USA) with 28 points and Rashad Shouri scored 11 points and 9 rebounds. Al Ahly's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Jeddah .

Al Ansar - Al Wehda 67-61

Al Ansar used a home court advantage and defeated the opponent from Mecca 67-61 on Monday night. Al Ansar forced 24 Al Wehda turnovers. It was a great evening for Libyan point guard Mohameed Elsadi (190-95) who led his team to a victory scoring 20 points and 8 rebounds. American-Armenian center Todd OBrien (211-89, college: UAB) helped adding 18 points and 9 rebounds. The best for the losing side was American-Bahrain Wayne Chism (206-87, college: Tennessee) with 18 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocks (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line) and Egyptian guard Ramy Gunday (185-81) scored 14 points and 8 rebounds. Al Ansar will meet Al Fateh (#9) in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Al Wehda will play against Al Hilal and hope to win that game.

Al Ittihad - Duba Club 84-60

Very expected game in Jeddah where Duba Club (0-3) was rolled over by Al Ittihad (2-1) 84-60 on Monday. Al Ittihad made 23-of-27 free shots (85.2 percent) during the game. They also forced 20 Duba Club turnovers. It was a great evening for American DaJuan Summers (203-88, college: Georgetown, agency: BIG) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 20 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists. The former international Mathna Almarwani (186-92) helped adding 19 points and 10 rebounds. Four Al Ittihad players scored in double figures. Al Ittihad had such big advantage that coach Mohamed Kardani felt comfortable to give the chance to play for 11 players saving starting five for next games. The best for the losing side was Canadian Otas Iyekekpolor (203-96, college: Fort Lewis) with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 13 rebounds and Syrian forward Wael Jlilaty (199-90) scored 19 points and 8 rebounds. Al Ittihad will meet Ohod (#3) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Duba Club will play against Al Nasr (#2) and hopes to get finally their first victory.

Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Al Nasr made 7 blocks. It was a great evening for the former international guard Khalid Abdel-Gabar (188-90, college: Windsor) who led his team to a victory scoring 30 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. The former international Jaber Al Kabe (184-85) helped adding 20 points and 6 rebounds. The best for the losing side was Algerian forward Mohamed Harat (198-90) with a double-double by scoring 39 points (!!!) and 13 rebounds (on 15-of-19 shooting from the field) and the former international point guard Mohammed Al-Saqer (179-85) produced a double-double by scoring 26 points, 12 rebounds, 7 assists and 5 steals. Al Nasr will meet Duba Club (#12) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Al Fateh will play against Al Ansar and hopes to get finally their first victory.
