Al Hilal Riyadh (SBL) signed 33-year old American guard Sundiata Gaines (185-91kg-86, college: Georgia). He didn't play anywhere last season, In summer 2018 he played at WM Dragons in Malaysian MPL league. Season 2017-2018 Gaines played at Defensor (LUB) in Uruguayan league where in 15 games he had very impressive stats: 23.3ppg, 5.7rpg, 5.7apg and 3.3spg in 2017-18 season. He helped them to make it to the semifinals. Quite impressive season as he was named to Latinbasket.com All-Uruguay LUB 1st Team, All-Imports Team and League Player of the Week.
In 2009 (a year after he left the college) Gaines was drafted by Idaho Stampede (D-League) in first round (15th overall).
The former University of Georgia standout is in his twelfth (!!!) season in pro basketball.
Gaines has tried to make it to the NBA and played in the NBA Pro Summer League in 2015.
He is quite experienced player. Gaines has played in seven different countries on three different continents (Europe, Latin America and of course North America). He has played previously professionally in China, Israel (Ironi Nes Ziona), Italy (Openjobmetis VA), Turkey (Besiktas), Venezuela (Guaiqueries), NBA (Toronto Raptors, Minnesota Timberwolves and Indiana Pacers) and NBA G League (Salt Lake City Stars and Stockton Kings).
Gaines could be described: An athletic player who is a very good leaper and plays with great intensity. Loves to play in up-tempo, can create his own shot and grabs a lot of rebounds for his size. Thanks to these skills, he can play in the 1 and in the 2 guard positions, but should work on his quarterbacking skills to become a true PG at pro level.
