PBA Round 11 (Philippines Cup): TNT Tropang lose to SM Beermen

Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of TNT Tropang (7-3) in Makati on Thursday night. Hosts were defeated by SM Beermen (7-1) 115-99. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of TNT Tropang. SM Beermen dominated down low during the game scoring 72 of its points in the paint compared to TNT Tropang's 50. They outrebounded TNT Tropang 55-37 including a 34-21 advantage in defensive rebounds. SM Beermen looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. The best player for the winners was center June Mar Fajardo (210-1989) who had a double-double by scoring 30 points and 16 rebounds. Guamanian guard Jericho Cruz (182-1990) chipped in 30 points. Forward Kelly Williams (201-1982, college: Oakland) produced a double-double by scoring 20 points and 10 rebounds for the hosts. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. SM Beermen have a solid series of four victories in a row. They keep a position of league leader. TNT Tropang at the other side dropped to the second place with three games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
Bottom-ranked Terrafirma Dyip (0-7) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 106-82 loss to third ranked Ginebra Kings (6-1) in Makati City. Naturalized German forward Christian Standhardinger (206-1989, college: Hawaii) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 18 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists. Japeth Aguilar contributed with 22 points, 6 rebounds and 7 blocks (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field) for the winners. Guard Juan Tiongson (178-1991) answered with 24 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists for Terrafirma Dyip. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Ginebra Kings have a solid series of four victories in a row. Defending champion maintains third place with 6-1 record behind leader SM Beermen. Terrafirma Dyip at the other side still closes the standings with seven games lost. Ginebra Kings will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Terrafirma Dyip will play on the road against Hotshots (#5) in Pasig City and hopes to get finally their first victory.
The game in Makati was also quite interesting. 6th ranked NLEX RW (4-4) played at the court of eighth ranked FiberXers (3-5). FiberXers managed to secure a 4-point victory 112-108 on Thursday. It was a great evening for Tyrus Hill who led his team to a victory scoring 18 points and 7 rebounds (on 8-of-9 shooting from the field). Kevin Alas responded with 23 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. FiberXers maintains eighth place with 3-5 record. Loser NLEX RW dropped to the seventh position with four games lost. FiberXers will meet higher ranked Hotshots (#5) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. NLEX RW will play against Rain or Shine and hope to secure a win.

In the last game of round 11 Meralco Bolts defeated Rain or Shine in Manila 77-73.



Rain or Shine - Meralco Bolts 73-77

There was no surprise in Manila where 11th ranked Rain or Shine (1-6) was defeated by seventh ranked Meralco Bolts (4-3) 77-73 on Wednesday. It was a great evening for forward Aaron Black who led his team to a victory scoring 20 points and 6 assists. Center Raymond Almazan (206-1989) helped adding 10 points, 15 rebounds and 4 blocks. Four Meralco Bolts players scored in double figures. Naturalized American swingman Gabe Norwood (196-1985, college: GMU) responded with 13 points and 9 rebounds and Beau Belga (198-1986) scored 11 points and 5 rebounds. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Meralco Bolts moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Hotshots. Rain or Shine lost sixth consecutive game. They keep the eleventh position with six games lost. Meralco Bolts will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Rain or Shine will play against NLEX RW (#7) in Makati City and hope to win that game.

Ginebra Kings players were unselfish on offense dishing 34 assists comparing to just 21 passes made by Terrafirma Dyip's players. They brought some defensive toughness making 8 blocks. Naturalized German forward Christian Standhardinger (206-1989, college: Hawaii) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 18 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists. Center Japeth Aguilar (206-1987, college: WKU) contributed with 22 points, 6 rebounds and 7 blocks (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field) for the winners. Both teams had five players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. FiberXers maintains eighth place with 3-5 record.
