PBA Round 9 (Philippine Cup): North Port beat Rain or Shine by three after a very close game

The most exciting game of round 9 in the PBA took place in Manila. This derby game ended with only three-point home defeat of 5th ranked Rain or Shine (6-5) to seventh ranked North Port (5-5) 91-88 on Sunday evening. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Rain or Shine. They outrebounded Rain or Shine 55-43 including 18 on the offensive glass. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when North Port made 14 blocks. 35 personal fouls committed by Rain or Shine helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. It was a good game for guard Robert Bolick (185-95) who led his team to a victory with 24 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists. Center Gregory Slaughter (216-88, agency: BeoBasket) contributed with 25 points, 11 rebounds and 6 blocks for the winners. Javee Mocon (193-95) answered with 8 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists for Rain or Shine. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. North Port moved-up to sixth place, which they share with NLEX RW. Rain or Shine at the other side keeps the fifth position with five games lost.
An interesting game for Hotshots (8-3) which hosted in Pasig City 4th placed SM Beermen (6-4). Third ranked Hotshots managed to get a 10-point victory 100-90. Guard Paul Lee (185-89) stepped up and scored 32 points and 5 assists for the winners and Ian Paul Sangalang chipped in 15 points and 12 rebounds. The best for the losing side was guard Jaymar Perez (188-93) with 20 points and 7 rebounds. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Hotshots moved-up to second place. SM Beermen at the other side keeps the fourth position with four games lost.
PBA top team - TNT Ka Tropa (10-1) had no problems winning another game on Saturday. This time they beat tenth ranked Alaska Aces (3-6) in Makati 103-85. John Paul Erram nailed 17 points and 8 rebounds for the winning side. Abu Jahal Tratter came up with 12 points and 9 rebounds for Alaska Aces in the defeat. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. TNT Ka Tropa have a solid series of four victories in a row. They maintain first place with 10-1 record. Loser Alaska Aces dropped to the eleventh position with six games lost.

In the last two games of round 9 winless Blackwater Elite were beaten by Meralco Bolts on the road 104-97. Terrafirma Dyip won against Alaska Aces on its own court 105-89.
The most impressive performance of 9th round was 17 points and 8 rebounds by Roosevelt Adams of Terrafirma Dyip.

Meralco Bolts - Blackwater Elite 104-97

No shocking result in a game when third ranked Meralco Bolts (7-2) beat bottom-ranked Blackwater Elite (0-11) in Manila 104-97 on Saturday. Meralco Bolts made 19-of-23 free shots (82.6 percent) during the game. Meralco Bolts outrebounded Blackwater Elite 55-31 including a 41-21 advantage in defensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. Center Raymond Almazan (206-89) nailed a double-double by scoring 15 points and 17 rebounds for the winning side and forward Allein Maliksi (191) accounted for 21 points and 10 rebounds (went 8 for 8 at the free throw line). Guard Mike Tolomia (191-93) came up with 15 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists and American guard Simon Enciso (180-91, college: NDN) added 14 points and 4 assists respectively for Blackwater Elite in the defeat. Both teams had five players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Meralco Bolts maintains third place with 7-2 record having five points less than leader TNT Ka Tropa. Loser Blackwater Elite still closes the standings with 11 games lost.
