China Defeats Hong Kong in East Asian Championship

China defeated Hong Kong 99-64 in the opening game of the East Asian championship in Nagoya, Japan.

Guangdong's young star, Zhou Peng (207-F-89), led China with 23 points and 5 rebounds. Veteran Zhang Nan of Zhejiang Guangsha had 16 points and 4 rebounds. Su Wei had 14 points and 8 rebounds. Chen Lei and Qiu Biao each scored 13. Zhang Kai had 7 points and 10 rebounds. Lau Chi Kin, Poon Chi Ho and Fong Shing Yee each had 12 for Hong Kong. Chen Kam Hing scored 10. China led 30-16 after one quarter, 53-37 at the half and 77-56 after three quarters. It outscored Hong Kong 22-8 in the fourth quarter.

China's starting five was Zhang Kai, Su Wei, Zhou Peng, Zhang Nan and Yang Ming.



Japan defeated Chinese Taipei 78-66 in the other game played today. China is grouped with Hong Kong and Korea in the first round while Japan, Chinese Taipei and Mongolia are in the other first round group. China will play Korea tomorrow.
