Second Team Australia repeat as champions after nail-biting Final with Japan - Jun 30, 2022
AMMAN (Jordan) - Australia claimed their second consecutive FIBA U16 Women's Asian Championship after beating Japan, 59-58, in an intense Final matchup. The title is Australia's second in as many appearances and also stretches the Sapphires' undefeated record to 12 games. This was also the second straight Final where Australia and Japan played against each other where both games were decided by only 1 point. The game went back and forth with both teams controlling the lead and the momentum. There were 11 lead changes in total in the game with Australia leading in just under 20 minutes of the entire game while Japan led for just over 15. The turning point of the game was the clutch free-throw shooting of Jada Clark who was fouled in the final seconds and sent to the charity stripe. Clark calmly knocked down both free-throw attempts to reclaim the lead and win the game. Isla Juffermans wraped up an entire campaign with 14 points, 13 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 blocks in the championship game. Hero of the game, Clark, finished with 13 points. The Sapphires spoiled a marvelous game from Kokora Tanaka who scored 17 points in 3 three-pointers. Moreover, 2 of those three-pointers were Japan's last 6 points which helped them get the lead after being down 57-52 in the final stretch. Unfortunately for Japan, it was not enough for them to pull off the win. Meanwhile, Korea avenged an earlier loss to New Zealand, 78-59, to win third place. The game was close through the first quarter, but the momentum shifted to Korea when they held New Zealand scoreless for nearly the entire second quarter for an 18-0 run. After another 15-0 run in the second half, the game was firmly in their hands. Kim Sol was Korea's best player with 26 points in the game, highlighted by 7 made three-pointers. Sung Suyeon also provided support with 5 points, 14 rebounds, 9 assists, and 3 steals. Nor New Zealand, Maia Jones was their leading scorer with 18 points to go with 5 rebounds. Australia, Japan, Korea, and New Zealand will all be playing at the FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup in Debrecen, Hungary from 9-17 July. Australia - South Korea 98-81 Australia outgunned South Korea to advance into the championship game. Isla Juffermans (191-C-2005) nailed 37 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to pace the winners. Australia eked out a 25-19 lead ten minutes into the game. South Korea stayed within striking distance throughout the next two quarters before Australia went on a 28-13 rally in the fourth term to ice the win. Jayda Clark (183-F/C-2005) finished with 18 points for the winning team. Kim Sol (174-G/F-2005) answered with 20 points for South Korea. Japan - New Zealand 87-58 Japan beat New Zealand to book their tickets into the Final in Amman. Japan dominated from start to finish. They piled up a 46-33 halftime lead and never looked back en route to the victory. South Korea - Australia 79-96 Australia finished preliminary round undefeated. They stormed past South Korea to earn the fourth straight win. Australia grabbed a 47-34 halftime lead. They added 49 points in the second half and rallied to the victory. Saffron Shiels (187-C-2006) posted 20 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists, while Isla Juffermans (191-C-2005) added 18 points and 17 rebounds for the winners. Hyeonju Ko replied with 19 points for South Korea. India - New Zealand 45-94 New Zealand wrapped up their preliminary round campaign on a high note. They fired past India to earn the second win. Maia Jones (179-SG-2005) posted 15 points to lead the winners. New Zealand grabbed a 40-19 halftime lead. They unloaded 54 points in the second half and marched to the win. AMMAN (Jordan) - Japan and Australia claim wins, locking up their spots in the Semi-Finals at the FIBA U16 Women's Asian Championship 2022 Division A. In the first game of Division A, Japan busted the gap wide open in the second half to beat New Zealand, 87-49. The first quarter went back and forth with 6 lead changes and ended 20-19 in favor of the Junior Tall Ferns. Japan overtook the lead int eh second quarter and started building up their lead, but it was still relatively close at only 6 points heading into the halftime break. However, it was in the third quarter where Japan exploded for a 17-0 run in just a bit over 3 minutes to command the lead for good. Even as Japan went scoreless for nearly 6 minutes in the fourth quarter, they had built up a big enough lead to stay ahead onwards to another win. All of Japan's fielded players scored in today's game with four players reach double digits. The leading scorers for Japan at 16 points each were Iroha Higashi and Kokora Tanaka. Japan's pressure defense got them 20 steals and forced New Zealand into committing 37 turnovers which was where Japan were able to build their lead. Japan scored 48 points off turnovers and 33 points in transition. Leading the way for New Zealand was Maia Jones who had 15 points. In the second game of the day, Australia cruised to a 104-34 win over India for their third straight victory. They remain the only undefeated team so far in Division A. The Sapphires warmed up their engines and had all cylinders firing from the second quarter onwards. It was in the third quarter where Australia held India scoreless for nearly 9 minutes as they built an 18-0 run. All players scored for Australia, as they shot an efficient 53.5 percent from the floor and a blistering 45.5 percent from the three-point line. They also dominated on the boards with 68 rebounds to India's 23. Leading the way in scoring for the Sapphires this game was Lulu Laditan who had 17 points to go with 4 rebounds. Japan and Australia have locked up their spots in the Semi-Finals, while the last spots remaining will be decided in tomorrow's games. Korea will have the opportunity to clinch their spot outright with a win over Australia in their game at 9:00 (GMT +3). Meanwhile, New Zealand and India will play at 11:15 (GMT +3) where either New Zealand can lock up their spot in the Semi-Finals or India can sneak in with their first win of Division A. New Zealand - Japan 49-87 Japan outgunned New Zealand to improve at 3-1 record in Amman. New Zealand eked oud a 20-19 lead after ten minutes. But Japan responded with a strong rally in the next periods. They sank 52 points in the second half to ease to the win. Kokoro Tanaka (171-SG-2006) and Iroha Higashi (159-G-2005) produced 16 points each for Japan. Maia Jones (179-SG-2005) answered with 15 points for New Zealand. Australia - India 104-34 Australia claimed the third straight win at the championship. They overcame India to stay undefeated. Australia dominated from start to finish. They established a 50-20 halftime lead. Australia held their opponents to just 14 points in the second half and marched to the win. India - South Korea 40-101 South Korea stormed past India to open win count in Amman. Yang Inye (170-PG-2005) came up with 24 points to lead the charge. South Korea earned a 49-19 halftime lead and never looked back en route to the victory. Jeong Hyun (180-F-2006) delivered 16 points for the winners. Manmeet Kaur (185-F-2005) replied with 15 points and 15 rebounds for India. Japan - Australia 65-73 Australia outgunned Japan to stay perfect in Amman. Australia jumped off to a strong start. They piled up a 41-22 halftime lead. Japan poured in 25 points in the fourth stanza but could not avoid the loss. Australia - New Zealand 77-57 Australia recorded the first win at the tournament. They fired past New Zealand to open win count in Jordan. New Zealand eked out a 20-18 lead after ten minutes. Australia however responded with a 22-11 run in the second frame to take a 9-point halftime lead. Australia followed with a 37-26 second half run to ice the win.
