BAHRAIN bowed out of title contention in the 23rd Arab Men's Basketball Championship last night after a heartbreaking 66-74 loss to Algeria in the semi-finals. The Bahrainis kept things close for three quarters, but in the final canto could not match their rivals. With the result, the Algerians moved on to the gold medal game where they will face Saudi Arabia. The Bahrainis, on the other hand, take on hosts Egypt for the bronze medals. Both contests will be played today. The game for third place is scheduled for a 6pm start, followed by the title-decider at 8pm. The Saudis booked their berth in the final following a stunning 70-69 win that dethroned defending champions Egypt. The final will be followed by the closing ceremony and awards presentation. It was a missed opportunity for Bahrain yesterday. The nationals had previously beaten both Algeria and Saudi during the tournament's preliminary round, but are now left to fight for third place. The Bahrainis' fourth quarter showing last night was also a complete opposite from the 44-point performance they had in their win against Algeria earlier this week. Bahrain started on a positive note as Mohammed Ameer swished home a medium-range jump shot for the game's first basket. Mohammed Buallay later buried a three-pointer from the right wing to beat the first-quarter buzzer and give the Bahrainis a narrow 22-20 lead. Both teams were then ice cold for the first five minutes of the second period, during which Bahrain could only score a single point while the Algerians were scoreless. Both teams eventually found their groove and Mohammed Kuwayed soared for a rim-rattling slam dunk to put Bahrain ahead 35-31. The Algerians managed to crawl back and levelled the proceedings at 37-all heading into the half. In the third period, Algeria gradually began to take control of the game, but Bahrain kept fighting. Maytham Jameel had a lay-up right before the quarter ended to make it 51-53. That set the stage for Bahrain's dismal fourth quarter, when the nationals appeared to lose their composure and rush several shots, allowing their rivals to eventually pull away. Algeria's Hichem Benayad-Cherif (201-G/F-90, college: Armstr.Atlantic) buried a three-pointer from the right corner to give them a 65-56 lead, and later with the Algerians leading 67-58, Bahrain's Jameel was called for a questionable unsportsmanlike foul on seven-foot, one-inch centre Mohamed Seddik Touati. He made both free-throws for a 69-58 advantage with under two minutes remaining, virtually icing the win for Algeria. Courtesy of: gdnonline.com

Bahrain go down fighting to UAE - Nov 14, 2018
BAHRAIN were handed a narrow 80-83 loss to the UAE last night in the 23rd Arab Men's Basketball Championship in Cairo. The game was the Bahrainis' final assignment in the tournament's elimination round, and the result had no bearing on their qualification for the semi-finals. The nationals had already booked their berth to the last four, where they will face Algeria. Bahrain finished the eliminations with a 2-2 win-loss mark. The Emiratis claimed their first win of the competition in four tries. The victory, however, was not enough to earn them a place in the semi-finals. The last two slots go to unbeaten hosts Egypt and Saudi Arabia, who had defeated the Emiratis in their head-to-head encounter during the eliminations. The semi-finals are scheduled to take place tomorrow, while the bronze and gold medal games are set for Friday. Bahrain were the early aggressors in yesterday's contest and they took a 25-17 lead at the end of the first period. The Emiratis bounced back in the second, holding the Bahrainis to just 14 points and tie the proceedings at 39-apiece at the half-time break. In the third period, Bahrain went ahead and enjoyed a narrow 64-58 at the end of the quarter. But just as if the Bahrainis appeared to be pulling away with the victory, the UAE had something else planned and they gradually began to claw away at the deficit. The Emiratis managed to get back to within 75-76 with three minutes left, and then power forward Qais Al Shabebi put them in front by three with back-to-back baskets. Young centre Mozamel Ameer had two free-throws and a fast-break lay-up to put Bahrain back ahead by one, 80-79. But Al Shabebi came up with a go-ahead basket and then pegged the final score from the free-throw to upset the Bahrainis and secure their first and only win of the championship. Bahrain's rising star guard Mustafa Hussain had three straight attempts from beyond the arc for Bahrain in the final minute, but he missed each time. Courtesy of: gdnonline.com
Gritty Bahrain crush Algeria - Nov 13, 2018
BAHRAIN used a dominant fourth-quarter performance to pull away from rivals Algeria last night in a surprising 99-68 rout in the 23rd Arab Men's Basketball Championship in Cairo. The Bahrainis erupted for 44 points in the final period to turn a 55-57 deficit after three into a massive 31-point demolition. The red-hot nationals claimed their second win in three tries and assured themselves of a place in the semi-final round. It was a stunning ending to the contest for the Bahrainis, who did well to bounce back from a loss to hosts Egypt in their previous game after beating Saudi Arabia in their opener. The Algerians suffered their second defeat although they already qualified for the semi-finals after ending the elimination round with a 2-2 win-loss record. Bahrain and Algeria are expected to meet once again in the semi-finals. The pairings will be confirmed tonight. In yesterday's other fixture, the Egyptians outplayed the Saudis 74-58 as they completed the tournament's opening stage unbeaten in four games. The Saudis suffered their third defeat to go along with one win, and their qualification for the next stage will depend on the results of today's game. Today, Bahrain are back in action as they take on winless UAE in their last assignment of the eliminations. The game is scheduled for a 6pm tip-off. The final four is then scheduled for Thursday, with the bronze medal game and gold medal decider both on Friday. In Bahrain's win yesterday, the nationals and their Algerian counterparts were evenly matched in the first two quarters. Their opponents had a slim 22-20 edge at the end of the first quarter, but the Bahrainis managed to tie the proceedings at 37-apiece at the half. Things remained close in the third period before things completely changed in the fourth, when Bahrain raised their level and finished things strong. While firing in 44 markers, they also held the Algerians to just 11 points in the entire period. Naturalised big man Wayne Chism (206-PF-87, college: Tennessee) was once again the top scorer for Bahrain, who are coached by Salman Ramadhan. Chism finished the game with 28 points, including four three-pointers. Court general Ahmed Abdulaziz (182-G) was on fire from beyond the arc, burying five triples en route to contributing 18 points in the win. Versatile forward Mohammed Kuwayed chipped in with 13 points, while young big man Mohammed Ameer had 10. Maytham Jameel finished with eight, and both Ahmed Hassan and Mustafa Hussain had six points. Bahrain go down fighting to Egypt - Nov 11, 2018
BAHRAIN suffered a disheartening 64-74 loss last night to defending champions Egypt in the 23rd Arab Men's Basketball Championship in Cairo. The nationals put in a valiant effort as they tried to overcame a tough challenge from their heavily favoured rivals. They managed to stand toe to toe with the hosts for most of the game, but in the end, the Egyptians had all the answers as they posted their third successive victory to remain the only unbeaten team in the competition. It was Bahrain's first defeat following their victory over arch-rivals Saudi Arabia. In yesterday's other contest, Saudi Arabia beat the UAE 79-65 for their first victory. The Saudis were previously dealt back-to-back losses but bounced back last night handing the Emiratis their third successive defeat. Tournament action continues tomorrow evening with Bahrain and Algeria facing off in the early game at 6pm, followed by Saudi taking taking on Egypt at 8pm. Today is a rest day after four straight days of action. In yesterday's highly anticipated battle between Egypt and Bahrain, who were first and second respectively in the previous edition of the championship, the visitors did well to take control early on as they built a 20-14 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Egyptians managed to claw their way back into the contest - 34-35 - at half-time. At the end of the third quarter the tie was balanced on a knife's edge - 52-52. The hosts then rallied in the final period outscoring Bahrain 22-12. Big man Wayne Chism (206-PF-87, college: Tennessee) had a game-high 34 points as he single-handedly tried to carry Bahrain in the game. Verstaile forward Mohammed Kuwayed was their only other player in double-figures with 11. Court general Ahmed Abdulaziz finished with nine points, Ahmed Hassan five, Mustafa Hussain three and Maytham Jameel two. Bahrain were playing without the services of forwards Ali Shukrallah and Mohammed Buallay due to the injuries they suffered during their clash against Saudi Arabia. Both were fit to take to the hardwood last night but head coach Salman Ramadhan opted to let them rest as a precaution. They are expected to be back in the rotation for the remainder of the games in the elimination round. Anas Osama Anas Mahmoud (216-C-95, college: Louisville) led Egypt with 18 points. Bahrainis outclass Saudis - Nov 10, 2018
BAHRAIN outclassed Saudi Arabia 75-68 last night to register a winning start to their campaign in the 23rd Arab Men's Basketball Championship in Cairo. Naturalised big man Wayne Chism (206-PF-87, college: Tennessee) and talented young guard Mustafa Hussain both came up with big baskets down the stretch to help the Bahrainis come away with the win. With the nationals leading 64-63 and with only five minutes to go in the contest, Hussain and Chism combined to score the next 11 points to seal the game. Hussain scored on a fast-break to make it 66-63, and then Chism had an and-one to extend their advantage to six. The six-foot, nine-inch centre then fired in a three-pointer for a crucial 72-63 cushion. Saudi's Khalid Abdel Gabar buried a three-pointer of his own on the other end, but Hussain replied with a baseline triple, supplying the final dagger that put the game out of reach from their rivals. Saudi scored once more prior to the final whistle, but the basket did not affect the final result. Chism led Bahrain's scorers with 19 points. Hussain came off the bench to contribute 15, while point guard Ahmed Hassan (203-F-91, college: MiraCosta JC) had 12. Hussain injected life into a listless Bahrain team that started the game. The Saudis quickly built a 15-7 lead early on, which they turned to a 24-15 advantage at the end of the first quarter. But Hussain came on in the second period and immediately made an impact with 10 points, helping the Bahrainis move ahead 40-34 at the half. Bahrain continued their fine play in the third period where they enjoyed a 47-36 advantage midway through, but in the final canto Saudi fought back and made things interesting after tying the game at 61-apiece with six minutes left. Court general Ahmed Abdulaziz then buried a three-pointer for a 64-61 edge, and Abdel Gabar scored for Saudi to make it 64-63 and pave the way for the end-game heroics from Bahrain's Hussain and Chism. Abdulaziz finished the game with eight points, while also contributing for Bahrain in the win were Ali Shukrallah and Mohammed Ameer, who both had six. Mohammed Kuwayed chipped in with five points, while Maytham Jameel and Mohamed Buallay each had two to round out Bahrain's scorers. Abdel Gabar paced Saudi with 19 markers in the loss. Bahrain have a rest day today but then take on hosts Egypt in their next game tomorrow. Saudi, meanwhile, will be looking to make up for today's defeat today when they face Algeria this evening at 6pm, Bahrain time. The Algerians defeated the UAE 86-69 yesterday's other game to bounce back from their loss to Egypt on opening night. Egypt and the UAE go head to head in tonight's other game at 8pm, Bahrain time.
