Tunisia outplays Egypt in the final of 9th Arab Basketball Cup  - Jul. 26, 2009
FINAL

Tunisia - Egypt 70-50

Tunisia outplayed Egypt by 20 points in the Big Final winning the trophy at the 9th Arab Basketball Cup in Morocco. Both teams entered to this game with perfect record, but the Tunisian demonstrated much better performance yesterday. Both squads opened the game nervously and the score was tied after ten minutes, 15-15. Tunisia improved after that scoring 20 more until the half time for 5-point lead, 35-30. Nothing has changed after the breather as Tunisia still dominated. They stopped Egypt on just 10 points in third period and on the other side netted 17. It was plus 12 before the last quarter, which also belonged to Tunisia.
The new champion had perfect 5-0 record in Prleminary Round. Of course, they were No.1 in Group A, where also were placed Syria, Algeria, UAE, Lebanon and Libya. Later, in the Quarterfinals Tunisia devastated Kuwait 99-57. In the Semis the Tunisians met the host of this event, Morocco celebrating tiny overtime win. Egypt, who won the Silver, outplayed Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Yemen at the Preliminary Stage in Group B. In the QFinals, Egypt cruised past Libya 84-54. In the Semis the Egyptians smashed Syria 99-78.

THIRD PLACE GAME

Morocco - Syria 85-81

The host of 9th Arab Basketball Cup was better than Syria wining the Bronze on this event. Second quarter was the crucial one for the Moroccans and their victory as they finished it with 32-23. Before that, in the first frame Syria created 15-16 lead. The Syrians took control on Morocco after the breather closing the gap to 2 points. At that time it seemed that Morocco is slowing down and also that Syria is closer to win, despite minus 2. However, the Moroccans had big support from their fans and were strong enough to resist in the last period. They even won it with 2-pts for the final 85-81.
Morocco finished the first stage with 3-1 record in Group B. Later in the Quarterfinals Morocco eliminated Algeria 69-61. In Semifinals it was a real thriller. Morocco played great, but loosed it in overtime against Tunisia. Yesterday, the Tunisians won the trophy on this event. On the other side, Syria had 3-2 in Preliminary Group A. In QFinals Syria beat Saudi Arabia 83-73. They failed in the Semis against Egypt 78-99.

Tunisia and Egypt to meet in the Final of 9th Arab Basketball Cup  - Jul. 25, 2009
Tunisia - Morocco 80-76

Tunisia did a great job yesterday against the host of the 9th Arab Basketball Cup. It was a very exciting game and both squads showed promising basketball level. It wouldn't be underserved in case that Morocco won this game as they also had a chance to do it. Anyway, Tunisia was a favorite and they met the expectations. They finished the first stage on Top of Group A with perfect 5-0 record and later smashed Kuwait in the Quarterfinals.
Everything started good for Tunisia, who created 21-17 lead after opening 10 minutes. However, Morocco improved a lot after that stopping the Tunisians on 12 pts in the second frame. On the other side they drained 19 for 33-36 turn. Third stanza also belonged to hosts, who entered to last ten minutes of regular time with plus 5. However, that was not enough as Tunisia managed to tie the score and to reach the overtime. In these extra five minutes the Tunisians were more concentrated advancing to Big Final. The game is scheduled for today and they rival for the Gold will be Egypt. The Egyptians were better than Syria in the Semis 99-78. It just means that Morocco will meet Syria in the battle for Bronze.

Syria - Egypt 78-99

Another fantastic performance for Team Egypt at the 9th Arab Basketball Cup. Egypt was confident in the first stage beating all rivals. They advanced to Quarterfinals as No.1 from Group B with 4-0 record. On the other side, Syria was No.2 in Group A with 3-2. In the QFinalsEgypt blasted Libya 84-54, while Syria outplayed Saudi Arabia 83-73.
Syria had a better start yesterday. After 10 minutes of the game the score was 27-23 for the Syrians. That was a sign that surprise maybe is not mission impossible in this match. However, it seems it was just a sign for the Egyptians to wake up. They immediately did it draining 30 more points until the half time. At the same time they stopped Syria on 17 for 9-point lead after 20 minutes. Third quarter was the crucial one as Egypt totally controlled rhythm of the game. It was 24-14 in this period and all hopes of Team Syria immediately disappeared. Last 10 minutes was just the formality.
Egypt will meet Tunisia today in the Big Final. The Tunisians escaped with overtime win against Morocco in the Semifinals. It means that Syria will take of the host of this event in the battle for Bronze.

Quarterfinals in Morocco: Summary  - Jul. 23, 2009
Tunisia - Kuwait 99-57

As it was expected, Tunisia did not have any troubles to beat Kuwait and to reach the Arab Basketball Cup Semifinals. That was an easy 99-57 victory for the team who was better during the entire time. After ten minutes of the game the Tunisians already created 19-14 lead. Until the half time they stopped Kuwait on just 10 more points, on the other side netting 18. It means that Tunisia entered to the last two quarters with comfortable 37-24. If Kuwait had thoughts there was a chance, everything disappeared after the breather. Tunisia totally smashed them 24-7 resolving question about the winner. Last ten minutes were just the formality.
The Semifinals are scheduled for tomorrow. Tunisia will meet Morocco, who is the host of this tournament. Morocco eliminated Algeria in the Semis. In the first stage they were No.2 in Group B with 3-1 record. As a reminder, Tunisia was No.1 in Group A. They had no troubles to beat all rivals for perfect 5-0 record.

Syria - Saudi Arabia 83-73

Syria celebrated 10-point win yesterday against Saudi Arabia advancing to Semifinals of the 9th Arab basketball Cup. Syria reached the Quarterfinals as No.2 from Group A with 3-2 record. On the other side, Saudi Arabia was No.3 in Group B meaning that the Syrians were expected to be seen at the next stage, based on the above mentioned results. They made it and they will take on powerful Egypt in the Semis. Egypt finished the first stage undefeated with perfect 4-0 record. Yesterday, the Egyptians outplayed Libya 84-54.
Lets return to the game. Syria was slightly better team in the first half, especially in the first ten minutes. They ended it with 24-20, but SA improved later. However, Syria managed to control them keeping plus 3 at the HT. The second half belonged to Syria, whose players knew how to keep the distance. SA did not give up, but Syrians were calm ending this game with decent plus 10.
Saudi Arabia finished this event with 2-3 record in total. They were better than Yemen and Kuwait.

Morocco - Algeria 69-61

The host of 9th Arab Basketball Cup, Morocco will play in the Semifinals. In the yesterday's game against Algeria, Morocco was better 69-61 and it will continue battle for the medals. On the other side, the competition is finished for the Algerians. They demonstrated decent performance, but failed when it was the most important.
Everything started good for Algeria, who had high productive first quarter. They ended it with 17-22 lead. However, that was all from them as Morocco totally took control on this match. Until the HT the host managed to create a turn, 35-32. After the breather, Algeria had another not so brilliant quarter, which Morocco exploited. So the hosts entered to last ten minutes with plus 6. It still was open game and Algeria had a chance. However, they needed little bit more than they showed yesterday. Morocco was strong enough to deny pressure and to reach the Semis. Their rival will be undefeated Tunisia. The Tunisians were No.1 in Group A with perfect 5-0. Yesterday they eliminated Kuwait 99-57.

Egypt - Libya 84-54

There was no surprise yesterday. All teams which were expected to triumph made it. One of those was Egypt, who finished the first stage at the Arab Basketball Cup undefeated. Yesterday, they had to take care of Libya, who had 3-2 record in Group A. That was not a tough job as the Egyptians controlled rhythm of the game from the very beginning. Libya had many troubles at the both sides of the court. Egypt once again demonstrated its tough defense, stopping Libya on just 54 points. In offense, the Egyptian ran the plays without any problems, what resulted with huge plus 30 at the end. In the Semifinals Egypt will meet Syria. Once again Egypt is a favorite, but Syria proved here they are tough rivals. In the Semifinals Syria eliminated Saudi Arabia with plus 10, 83-73. They ended first stage as No.2 in Group A.
Both Semifinal games are scheduled for tomorrow. Beside Egypt an Libya, we will also have a game between Tunisia and the most - Morocco.

Everything is ready for the Quarterfinals in Morocco  - Jul. 22, 2009

GROUP A

UAE - Syria 60-80

Syria did not have to work very hard in order to beat UAE at the 9th Arab Basketball Cup in Morocco. That was the last day of the Preliminary Round and Syria finished it with pretty decent 3-2 record. That is enough for the second place in Group A, despite Algeria and Libya had the same numbers. Syria faced with 87-91 loss against Libya, but the Syrians managed to beat Algeria later 107-94. Algeria outplayed Libya 70-51 meaning that second place belongs to Syria and third to Algeria. Libya is on the position number four. Anyway, all three teams qualified for the Quarterfinals. The top ranked team in Pool A is Tunisia with perfect 5-0. UAE finished the Preliminary Stage with just 1 win in 5 games. Fortunately, they are not at the bottom thanks to victory against Lebanon.
The Quarterfinals begin today and Syria will take on No.3 from Group B - Saudi Arabia. That for sure will not be an easy job for Syria, as SA demonstrated decent performance so far. In the group with strong Egypt and the hosts Morocco, SA was third with 2 wins and 2 defeats. Yesterday they outplayed Kuwait with more than 20.

Lebanon - Algeria 69-70

Algeria escaped with tiny 70-69 against the winless Lebanon at the Arab Basketball Cup in Morocco. Even before this game the Algerians were the sure members of the Quarterfinals, but they had to win in order to keep third place. The second ranked Syria is No.2 and Libya is No.4 with the same numbers. In this circle Syria faced with 87-91 loss against Libya, but the Syrians managed to beat Algeria later 107-94. Algeria outplayed Libya 70-51 after that. On the other side, Lebanon finished the competition with poor 0-5. They and UAE, who have 1-4, did not qualify for the Quarterfinals.
The Quarterfinal games are scheduled for today. Naturally, Algeria will take on No.2 from Group B, which is Morocco. That will be a difficult job for Algeria as Morocco is the host of this event. They finished first stage with 3 wins and 1 defeat. The only loss happened against powerful Egypt. The winner of this game will take on Tunisia or Kuwait in the Semifinals. Of course, here Tunisia is a favorite as they had 5-0 in Group B. Kuwait had 1-3 in Pool B.

Tunisia - Libya 84-48

Tunisia demonstrated another great performance at the Arab Basketball Cup in Morocco. After 4 consecutive wins, the Tunisians grabbed another nice one and it was against Libya. Of course, Tunisia advances to Quarterfinals from top of Group A. Their rival will be No.4. from Group B, Kuwait. On the other side, Libya finished this stage as No.4 in Group A. Fortunately to them, that is also enough for the Quarterfinals. Second ranked Syria and third Algeria have the same record as Libya. In this circle Syria faced with 87-91 loss against Libya, but the Syrians managed to beat Algeria later 107-94. Algeria outplayed Libya 70-51 after that. In the Quarterfinals Libya will take on powerful Egypt. There is not need to say anything about Egypt, who had 4-0 in Group B. If Libya advances to Semis it will be a big surprise. The winner of this game will meet the winner of Syria - Saudi Arabia game. There Syria has slightly better chances.

GROUP B

Kuwait - Morocco 55-82

Expected win for the host of the 9th Arab Basketball Cup. With this victory Morocco jumped to 3-1 record in Group B finishing the first stage on second place. It means that Morocco will meet the third-ranked team from Group A - Algeria. Despite this loss, Kuwait also reached the Quarterfinals. They registered only one with in 4 games, but the thing is that Group B had 5 teams in total and that was enough for position number four. Victory against Yemen was the crucial one for the next stage. Kuwait will take on strong Tunisia in QFinals. Of course it will be a huge surprise if Tunisia fails to reach the Semis, as they had perfect 5-0 in the first stage. Lets return to the first pair, Morocco and Algeria. That supposes to be a interesting game ad both squads demonstrated decent performance so far. Algeria had a chance to reach second place in Group A as Libya and Syria had the same 3-2 record. In this circle Syria faced with 87-91 loss against Libya, but the Syrians managed to beat Algeria later 107-94. Algeria outplayed Libya 70-51 after that.
All Quarterfinal games are scheduled for today.

Day 6 in Morocco  - Jul. 21, 2009

GROUP A

Syria - Algeria 107-94

Syria grabbed extremely important win yesterday in Morocco. It was the sixth day of the Arab Basketball Cup and Syrians desperately needed a victory after 1-2 record. In three games Syria faced with defeat against Libya and Tunisia, but they were better than Lebanon. On the other side, Algeria had 2-1 thanks to victories against UAE and Libya. Now Syria is No.3 in Group A and Algeria in No.4.
The first quarter of the game belonged to Syria 26-18 and it was a clear signal that the Algerians will have a difficult job. Both squads were very motivated, especially at the offensive end. Syria was better there scoring 107 pts in total. Of course that was more than enough for comfortable victory.
Today is important day for both teams as they will play the last games in the first round. Syria will meet UAE, while Algeria will take on Lebanon. UAE has not so brilliant 1-3 record so far, but there are some options they can finish third at the end. If Syria wins the third place will belong to them. Algeria also has a chance for third pace if Syria losses, and they beat winless Lebanon, what will most probably going to happen.

UAE - Libya 63-75

Libya managed to grab third win at the 9th Arab Basketball Cup in Morocco. After Syria and Lebanon, the Libyans were too strong for UAE jumping to second place of Group A with 3-1 record. The only defeat happened against Algeria. UAE fell to fifth place with 1-3 record.
Everything started good for UAE yesterday. After ten minutes of the game they created 18-16 lead. Until the half time UAE players were even better stretching the plus to 31-26. At that point of game it seemed that the Libyans will capitulate for the second time, but they totally changed attitude after the breather. Their strong defense stopped UAE on 13 points in third period, while on the other side they drained 22. It means that Libya had 48-44 advantage before the last ten minutes. Until the end the Libyans totally smashed UAE 27-19.
Today, Libya will have a day-off. UAE will played its last game in the first stage, against Syria. There are some options that with victory UAE can jump on position No.3.

GROUP B

Saudi Arabia - Egypt 51-85

And another great win for the Egyptians. They demonstrated the best performance so far in Group B and they totally deserved to finish the first stage at the top of it. Before Saudi Arabia, the Egyptians outplayed the hosts Morocco, Kuwait and Yemen. Saudi Arabia also finished the competition in the first stage, but with 2-2 record. It is still not clear what position will belong to them in Group B. Currently the second ranked team Morocco has 2-1, while Kuwait has 1-2 record. Saudi Arabia suffered 60-71 loss against Morocco in the opening day. The good thing is that they blasted Kuwait 73-52, so there is still a small chance for the second place. Of course it is hard to believe that the hosts (Morocco) will miss the opportunity to beat Kuwait today. If that happen the second place will belong to them. In the other case, Saudi Arabia will have a chance as there will be circle between these three teams. One thing is sure, that Egypt is No.1 here and it will go to the next stage. In Group A Tunisia was confident. Like Egypt, the Tunisians will probably end the first stage perfect, of course if they beat Libya today.

Morocco - Yemen 86-66

Excepted victory for the hosts of the 9th Arab Basketball Cup. The winless Yemen had no chance in this game, especially as Morocco desperately needed victory in order to keep the hopes for the second place in Group B alive. Now Morocco has 2-1 record and it is currently No.2. On the other side, Yemen finished the first stage with poor 0-4.
Surprisingly, the first quarter in this match belonged to Yemen, 17-19. Morocco drastically improved after that. They intensified defense stopping Yemen on just 11 points until the half time. At the offensive end they scored 29 for plus 16. At that moment it was clear that the game is over for Yemen. The hosts slowed down after the breather keeping the big lead. Until the end they managed to stretch it even more, to the final plus 20, 86-66.
Today, Morocco will play crucial game for the second place against Kuwait. In case of win, position No.2 will be reserved for them. In case of defeat there is option that Saudi Arabia can make it.

Day 5 in Morocco  - Jul. 20, 2009

GROUP A

Algeria - Libya 70-51

Algeria managed to grab the second win at the 9th Arab Basketball Cup in Morroco. In the yesterday's game against Libya, the Algerians demonstrated pretty good performance jumping to 2-1 in Group A, what is currently enough for the second place. Actually, Libya has the same record now, but due to this loss the Libyans are No.3. The top ranked team of Group A is Tunisia with perfect 4-0.
Opening quarter was totally leveled yesterday. Neither of two teams was able to make a bigger lead so after ten minutes the score was tied, 18-18. Algeria drastically improved after that. They intensified defense stopping the Libyans on just 8 points until the half time. On the other side, they drained 20 for 38-26 lead. Nothing has changed after the breather as Algeria still was a way better team. Question about the winner is resolved even before the last quarter as Algerians jumped to plus 22. The last 10 minutes were just the formality.
In the next round Algeria will meet Syria. Libya will take on UAE. Both, Algeria and Libya, are favorites in these meetings as they have better score so far.

Lebanon - Tunisia 47-96

Tunisia continues with wonderful performance at the 9th Arab Basketball Cup. The Tunisians registered 4 consecutive victories, what is of course enough for top of Group A after 5 days. Lebanon is on totally different side of the standings. They faced with 4 failures in 4 games, with just one more chance to grab the win in Morocco.
From the early beginning it was clear that Lebanon will not have a chance in this match. The Tunisians opened the game strongly letting Lebanon to score just 4 points in the first quarter. Of course, that was a clear signal what will happen until the end. Lebanon had just 14 points in the first half, while Tunisia drained 50. They scored 31 of those in the second frame. Same picture on the court was seen in the second half. Lebanon was not able to compete against powerful Tunisians, who entered in to the last quarter with huge 70-29.
In the next round Tunisia will meet Libya having a chance to end this stage perfect. Lebanon will take on Algeria and it is almost sure they can not count on win in this game. The Algerians have 2-1 after 3 games.

GROUP B

Yemen - Egypt 45-93

As it was expected, Egypt grabbed third consecutive win at the 9th Arab Basketball Cup in Morocco. After wins against the hosts and Kuwait, the Egyptians trashed Yemen with huge 93-45. The victory was expected before the game as Yemen already faced with two failures so far. It means that now they have poor 0-3 in Group B, while Egypt is on top of it with a nice chance to end this stage perfect.
First quarter, which belonged to Egypt 25-7, talks everything for itself. The following 10 minutes also belonged to the Egyptians, who now drained even more - 28 points. It means that the score at the half time was impressive 53-22. Third quarter belonged to Yemen 13-12, but during the last 10 minutes they were destroyed once again.
In the last game of the first stage Egypt will meet Saudi Arabia, who has 2-1 record. In case of win, there is a chance also that Saudi Arabia can jump on top of this pool. That depends of Morocco and their results. In the next match Morocco will plat against winless Yemen and after that vs Kuwait. The game against Morocco is the last chance for Yemen for a joy on this Cup. Another winless team is Lebanon, but in Group A.

Saudi Arabia - Kuwait 73-52

Saudi Arabia grabbed important win at the 9th Arab Basketball Cup in Morocco. After 71-44 success against Yemen, Saudi Arabia managed to beat Kuwait 73-52. That is a valuable victory as both teams had 1-1 record before this meeting. SA is No.2 now in Group B, while Kuwait fell on fourth place. The top ranked team in this pool is Egypt with 3-0. The last ranked is winless Yemen (0-3).
Saudi Arabia took control on its rival from the early beginning. After opening 10 minutes the score was 17-9. However, Kuwait improved after that stopping SA on their way of extending the lead. Until the half time they came on 33-26, what was a sign that we could watch exciting rest of the game. That still could happen despite Saudi Arabia ended third frame with 17-15. Anyway, Saudi Arabia totally smashed Kuwait until the end stopping it on 11 pts in the last quarter. At the same time they drained 23 for more than comfortable win.
Today, Saudi Arabia will take on undefeated Egypt. Kuwait has a day off, after what they will meet the hosts Morocco.

Day 4 in Morocco  - Jul. 19, 2009
Syria and Lebanon played for the initial victory at the 9th Arab Basketball Cup . Syria overcame the opponents 87:69 for 1-2 record. The winners improved to 2-0 record, while Kuwait dropped at 1-1. Egypt will face next Yemen that is winless with 0-2. Kuwait plays today with Saudi Arabia that is 1-1.

Saudi Arabia outscored Yemen in the last game of Day 3 in Morocco. That was the game for the first victory as both teams lost the openers of the Arab Nations Cup. On Sunday Saudi Arabia will play against Kuwait that remains undefeated. Yemen will face Egypt that is also has 1-0 record.
