VBA Round 9: Wings are defeated by Warriors

The game between second ranked Wings (6-4) and fifth ranked Warriors (4-7) was the most important one in the last round on Saturday night. Wings were defeated by Warriors in Ho Chi Minh 80-62. Warriors forced 22 Wings turnovers. Americans were the main players on the court. Garrius Holloman (198-1989, college: BCU) stepped up and scored 37 points (!!!) and 7 rebounds for the winners and guard Clay Guillozet (193-1997, college: Valdosta St.) chipped in 16 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists. Warriors' coach Predrag Lukic used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The best for the losing side was forward DeSean Parsons (201-1995, college: Portland St.) with a double-double by scoring 16 points, 22 rebounds and 4 assists. Warriors maintains fifth place with 4-7 record. Wings lost third consecutive game. They keep the second position with four games lost. They share it with Buffaloes. Warriors' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Hanoi to the arena Buffaloes.
Very important is a home loss of second ranked Dolphins (6-5) against fourth ranked Buffaloes (6-4) on Wednesday night. Host Dolphins were defeated by Buffaloes in a tough game in Nha Trang 69-77. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Dolphins. It was a key game for the second position in the league. American forward Shane Henry (203-1993, college: Virginia Tech) nailed a double-double by scoring 22 points, 23 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 blocks for the winning side and Tam Dinh Thanh accounted for 25 points and 13 rebounds. Buffaloes' coach Eric Weissling allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. American center Dominique Tham (195-1996, college: Mount Olive) came up with a double-double by scoring 23 points and 22 rebounds for Dolphins in the defeat. Buffaloes moved-up to second place, which they share with City Wings. Dolphins at the other side dropped to the fourth position with five games lost. Buffaloes will play against league's second-placed Wings in Ho Chi Minh in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Dolphins will play at home against Catfish and hope to get back on the winning track.

Buffaloes will play against the league's second-placed Wings where they are definitely not considered as a favorite in this game either.

In the last two games of round 9 Dragons were destroyed by Dolphins on the opponent's court 76-41. Heat managed to outperform Warriors in a home game 79-69.

Catfish - Buffaloes 96-81

Buffaloes (#4) were upset in Can Tho by seventh ranked Catfish 96-81. Catfish forced 19 Buffaloes turnovers and outrebounded them 43-32 including 32 on the defensive glass. The former international point guard Sang Dinh Thanh (185-1994) chipped in 22 points and 7 rebounds. Four Catfish players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was American point guard Jeffery Stubbs (189-1991, college: Jackson St.) who recorded 25 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists and the other American import forward Shane Henry (203-1993, college: Virginia Tech) added 16 points and 10 rebounds respectively. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Catfish maintains seventh place with 3-7 record. Loser Buffaloes dropped to the second position with four games lost. Very expected game in Nha Trang where 6th ranked Dragons (4-8) were crushed by second ranked Dolphins (6-5) 76-41 on Sunday. Dolphins outrebounded Dragons 62-37 including a 22-9 advantage in offensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was American point guard CJ Jackson (185-1996, college: Ohio St., agency: Blacktop Management) who had a double-double by scoring 24 points and 17 rebounds. His fellow American import center Dominique Tham (195-1996, college: Mount Olive) chipped in a double-double by scoring 21 points, 14 rebounds and 5 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was center Kien Pham Duc (197-1998) who recorded 8 points and 7 rebounds and American point guard Dominique Grant (183-1989, college: Bellevue) added 5 points and 7 rebounds respectively. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Despite that victory Dolphins went down to fourth position due to points difference. Loser Dragons keep the sixth place with eight games lost. Dolphins will meet at home bottom-ranked Catfish (#7) in the next round. Dragons will have a break next round.

Heat forced 19 Warriors turnovers and outrebounded them 50-36 including a 37-26 advantage in defensive rebounds. Americans were the main players on the court also this time. The best player for the winners was forward Alonzo Stafford (198-1993, college: CCC) who had a double-double by scoring 25 points, 16 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals. Guard Madarious Gibbs (185-1993, college: Texas Southern) chipped in 18 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was Garrius Holloman (198-1989, college: BCU) who recorded 23 points and 8 rebounds and guard Clay Guillozet (193-1997, college: Valdosta St.) added 21 points and 4 steals respectively.
