All-Stars Game: Korean KBL beat Chinese CBA 85-82
Led by imports Kris Lang and Jameel Watkins and
Korean guard
Kim Seung Hyun (178-G-78) the Korean Basketball League defeated the CBA
85-82 tonight. Lang and Watkins each scored 17 points while Kim,
voted MVP of the game, scored 8 points and dished out 9 assists.
Import Olumide Oyedeji led China with 19 points and 24 rebounds while
Liu Wei scored 13 points, Yi Jianlian scored 12 while Hu Weidong and Zhu
Fangyu scored 11 apiece. In a closely-played game, China jumped
off to an 8-4 lead. China at one point led 39-25 before the South
Koreans stormed back. Korea regained the lead at 58-56 and the
lead swung back and forth for a while. Korea took the lead for
good at 78-77 and a three-pointer by Moon Kyun-Eun made it 85-80.
The Korean import big men Kris Lang and Jameel Watkins negated China's
native size advantage, allowing the speedy Korean guards to outplay
China's perimeter players. Chinese guard play has improved, but is
still not quite equal to Korea's. This is why it is likely that
Liu Wei will not be China's point guard in 2008, but will probably be
surpassed by one of the promising young guards born in 1985 or
thereafter.
Olumide Oyedeji and Yi Jianlian could not dominate the Korean import
inside duo, and while Yi scored 12 points, he only grabbed 1 rebound and
fouled out. At 17, he is not yet physically strong enough to
compete with the players the calibre of Lang and Watkins. Tang
Zhengdong, age 19, only scored 2 points as the older, stronger, more
experienced Oyedeji was needed to compete against the Korean imports at
center. Tang is a pure center, not a power forward.
The two teams will meet on January 30 in Harbin, China, where the CBA
will have the home-country advantage.
