NBL Round 5 (Regular Season): Chong Ghee lose their first game against Tong Whye

The most crucial game of the last round was the first loss of Chong Ghee (4-1) in Singapore on Wednesday night. Visitors were edged by third ranked Tong Whye (5-2) 77-76. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Chong Ghee. Edwin Tan-Zhi stepped up and scored 24 points and 5 rebounds for the winners and Sashi Pillay chipped in 6 points and 17 rebounds. Alpha McKevin responded with a double-double by scoring 29 points and 13 rebounds. Chong Ghee's coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Tong Whye moved-up to second place. Chong Ghee at the other side keeps the fourth position with one game lost. Tong Whye are looking forward to face SBA (#6) in the next round. Chong Ghee will play against Siglap and is hoping to prove to their supporters that this time they can win.
NBL top team - Adroit (5-0) had no problems winning another game. This time they crushed eighth ranked Nanyang (2-3) 94-49. The former international Meng Leon Kwek Wei (190-1996) nailed 38 points (!!!) and 5 rebounds for the winning side and Qing-De Wu accounted for 11 points and 7 rebounds. Ying Lee came up with 7 points and 7 rebounds for Nanyang in the defeat. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Undefeated Adroit have an impressive series of five victories in a row. Defending champion maintains first place with 5-0 record. Nanyang lost third consecutive game. They keep the eighth position with three games lost. They share it with Tagawa. Adroit's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Singapore Siglap.
An interesting game took place in Singapore where 6th ranked SG Bball (3-4) was upset on the court of ninth ranked Tagawa (2-3) 73-61 on Thursday. The best player for the winners was Shi-Yu Ng who had a double-double by scoring 17 points, 15 rebounds and 6 assists. Tagawa's coach used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Bin Putra produced 8 points, 16 rebounds and 7 assists for the guests. Tagawa moved-up to eighth place, which they share with Nanyang. Loser SG Bball keeps the sixth position with four games lost. They share it with SBA. Tagawa's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Singapore .

There were no shocking results in the rest of the games of round 5: bottom-ranked Police was destroyed by Xin Hua on the opponent's court 91-68. SG Bball managed to outperform Siglap in a home game 74-61. SBA lost to undefeated Hornets on the road 52-88.




Xin Hua - Police 91-68

Very expected game in Singapore where 12th ranked Police (1-5) was crushed by fifth ranked Xin Hua (4-2) 91-68 on Tuesday. Xin Hua dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to Police's 24. They outrebounded Police 56-36 including a 39-22 advantage in defensive rebounds. Xin Hua looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. The best player for the winners was Cheng Shan Tan who scored 22 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists. Zao Liang Chia chipped in a double-double by scoring 17 points and 10 rebounds. Bayot Ferrera produced 16 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists and Siang Chong Siew added 14 points and 6 rebounds respectively for the guests. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The victory was the third consecutive win for Xin Hua. They maintain fifth place with 4-2 record. Police lost their fifth game in a row. Newly promoted team dropped to the tenth position with five games lost. Xin Hua will meet SG Bball (#7) in the next round. Police will play against Nanyang and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

SG Bball - Siglap 74-61

Rather predictable result when sixth ranked SG Bball (3-4) defeated at home 10th ranked Siglap (1-6) 74-61 on Tuesday. SG Bball made 18-of-22 free shots (81.8 percent) during the game. They also forced 22 Siglap turnovers. The best player for the winners was the former international power forward Shengyu Lim (192-1990) who had a double-double by scoring 22 points and 10 rebounds. Point guard Bin Putra (180-2002) chipped in 7 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists. International guard Xavier Ng Jun (188-2000) produced 21 points and 6 rebounds and Jeryl Gan added 10 points and 5 rebounds respectively for the guests. Siglap's coach let to play twelve players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. SG Bball maintains sixth place with 3-4 record, which they share with SBA. Siglap lost their sixth game in a row. They dropped to the eleventh position with six games lost. SG Bball will meet at home higher ranked Xin Hua (#5) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Siglap will play against Chong Ghee (#4) and hope to win that game.

Not a big story in a game in Singapore where 6th ranked SBA (3-4) was rolled over by leader Hornets (4-0) 88-52 on Wednesday. Hornets dominated down low during the game scoring 62 of its points in the paint compared to SBA's 30. They outrebounded SBA 46-31 including a 35-22 advantage in defensive rebounds. Hornets looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. The best player for the winners was the former international guard Kelvin Lim (191-1996) who scored 26 points and 7 rebounds (on 11-of-13 shooting from the field). Malaysian Russell Low-Wen chipped in 15 points, 6 rebounds and 4 blocks. Four Hornets players scored in double figures. Haran Prem produced 10 points and Wei Shern Ooi added 11 points respectively for the guests. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The victory was the fourth consecutive win for Hornets. Despite that victory Hornets went down to third position due to points difference. SBA lost their third game in a row. They keep the sixth place with four games lost. They share the position with SG Bball.
