Qatar’s first-ever women’s basketball league to begin on November 6- October 19, 2023

The Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) has officially announced the commencement of the inaugural women's basketball league, scheduled to begin in November at the Al-Ittihad Hall in the Al Gharafa area. Simultaneously, the girls' league will also kick off on the same date. A substantial sum of QR140,000, along with valuable financial prizes, will be up for grabs throughout the tournaments, which will run from November 6, 2023, to February 15, 2024. This exciting news was unveiled during a press conference attended by esteemed individuals such as QBF President Mohammed Saad Al Mughaiseeb, QBF Secretary-General Saadoun Al-Kuwari, Director of the Women’s Basketball National Team Ms. Amal Al-Kaldi, Member of the Women’s Committee Aya Mohammed, and QBF Head of Media Committee Khaled Al-Qahtani. The first edition of the league will witness the participation of six teams, namely Al Gharafa, Al Arabi, Ho0ps Al Shamal, Black Ravens, Pro Sport, and Al Multaqa. The league competitions will be conducted in three stages within a single group, comprising the aforementioned teams. The league's inaugural matches are scheduled to take place on Monday, November 6th, featuring three exciting encounters: Pro Sport versus Black Ravens, Al Gharafa versus Hoops Al Shamal, and Al Arabi against Al Multaqa. In the girls' league, seven teams will be vying for victory: Amna Bint Wahab School, Pro Sport, Fame Sports Academy, Hoops North, Al Multaqa, the Recreation Center, and the Sports Laboratory. The competitions will be held in two stages within a single group, commencing on November 6, 2023, and concluding on February 27, 2024. Ms. Amal Al-Kaldi, the Director of the Women’s Basketball National Team, expressed her immense joy and gratitude towards the launch of the first women's basketball league. She extended her appreciation to the Qatar Olympic Committee and the Qatar Basketball Federation for their efforts in establishing this groundbreaking league for women and girls, acknowledging the immense popularity of the sport in Qatar. Al-Kaldi emphasized that this league marks the beginning of a successful era, as everyone involved is diligently working towards the development and advancement of women's sports in the State of Qatar. "We aim to enhance the tournament by increasing the number of participating teams or by elevating the overall technical level, thereby enhancing the quality of the game. Additionally, we anticipate the formation of a proficient team capable of competing in the Asian Games scheduled to take place in Qatar in 2030," she added. Meanwhile, the President of the Qatar Basketball Federation, Al Mughaiseeb, stated that the tournament aligns with the state's endeavors to promote women's involvement in various activities, including sports, under the esteemed leadership of His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee. This initiative aims to identify and nurture the talents of young girls, while also encouraging their participation in sports activities and providing them with the necessary resources. These efforts are crucial in harnessing the potential of Qatari girls and supporting the national teams. "Our objective through these programs is to achieve excellence and success in women's sports, which serves as a fundamental pillar of the Qatar National Vision 2030. As an organization, we are committed to empowering women and expanding opportunities and support for Qatari women," he further emphasized. |
