Al Rayyan defended their D1 title. They edged Al Sadd in the second game to complete the sweep of the championship series. The guests trailed by 6 points at the halftime before their 37-22 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. The best player for the winners was American point guard Dominic James (180-86, college: Marquette) who scored 25 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists. The former international forward Tanguy Ngombo (197-84) chipped in a double-double by scoring 22 points and 11 rebounds. Ivorian-French center Mohamed Kone (211-81, college: Valparaiso) produced a double-double by scoring 14 points, 19 rebounds and 4 assists and international swingman Khalid Abdi (198-87) added 16 points and 6 rebounds (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line) respectively for the hosts. Four Al Sadd players scored in double figures. Al Rayyan assert supremacy with Qatar Cup victory - Mar 30, 2016
Al Rayyan once again proved they are the top-most basketball team in the country when they beat Al Gharafa 83-71 to win the Qatar Cup yesterday. At the Al Gharafa Indoor Hall, Al Rayyan's supremacy was never in doubt as they overcame a first quarter setback to eventually win the title with some degree of comfort. It was the second title of the season for Al Rayyan, who earlier this month had won the Qatar Basketball League in convincing fashion. 'We are having a great season thanks to the dedication and the determination of the team. We are enjoying ourselves and we hope to bag a treble when the prestigious Emir Cup begins,' Al Rayyan skipper Yasseen Ismail Musa (203-F/C-80) said. Yasseen Ismail Musa, a veteran of many a club and national campaign, played for only 17.38 minutes yesterday scoring just three points but his very presence on the court was a tremendous encouragement to some of the younger charges in the team. 'We gelled as a team. Everyone contributed to the team's success. It would be unfair to single out any one player,' the veteran added. Salem Abdullah and Dominic James (180-PG-86, college: Marquette) were the key to Al Rayyan's success yesterday as they did the bulk of the scoring for the team. While Abdullah top scored with 25, Davon was not too far behind on 22, while Tanguy Ngombo (197-F-84) chipped in with 14. 'It felt great to contribute significantly to the team's success,' said Abdullah. 'We knew Al Gharafa were a dangerous side and when we trailed 25-18 after the first session we raised our level to wrest back the advantage,' he added. A remarkable feature of Abdullah's heroics yesterday was the fact that he score 21 of his 25 points from the three-point mark, a strategy that left the Al Gharafa defence rattled. Davon, one of the stalwarts for Al Rayyan this season, managed a trio of three-pointers in his 22. After trailing 25-18, Al Rayyan decided enough was enough and produced 22 points in the second quarter to move ahead 43-34. By the time the third quarter ended they were a 62-45 ahead leaving Al Gharafa completed deflated. Omar Saad scored 25 points for Al Gharafa, while Jeremiah Massey (202-F-82, college: Kansas St.) had 23 and Kevin Galloway (200-PG-88, college: Texas Southern) 12. Al Gharafa's bench contributed 14 points, while Gharafa managed only one in this department. Al Gharafa coach Koussay Hatem was disappointed with the loss but congratulated the winners. 'It is always difficult to play Al Rayyan but we tried hard. Now we hope to go one better in the Emir Cup,' he said. El Jaysh celebrated the Emir Cup title. They overcame Al Gharafa in the Final tonight. Vernon Macklin (208-F/C-86, college: Florida) posted 18 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. Gharafa eked out a 21:20 lead after the opening quarter. The teams traded baskets throughout the second term. Gharafa secured a narrow 37:36 halftime lead. Jaysh stiffened defensively in the third term. They held their opponents to just 10 points in the period to jump ahead for a 52:47 lead at the final intermission. Jaysh knocked down 20 points in the fourth quarter and raced to the win. Adamu Saaka (198-SF-88, college: Furman) tossed in 15 points, while Ali Turki added 12 points for the winners. Manny Adako (203-F/C-87, college: Northeastern, agency: Court Side) responded with 22 points for Gharafa. Kevin Galloway (200-PG-88, college: Texas Southern) had 19 points and 12 rebounds in the defeat.
