Strong Group Athletics-Philippines target their second win in just as many games at the William Jones Cup. Andre Roberson (201-F-1991, college: Colorado) and Abando Rhenz (188-SG-1998) will look to power Strong Group-Philippines to back-to-back wins as the defending champions resume their 2025 William Jones Cup campaign against Japan’s U25 national team on Sunday, July 14 at 5:00 p.m. in New Taipei City. Fresh off a statement 67-56 win over hosts Chinese Taipei Blue, Strong Group aims to tighten its grip on the standings with Roberson and Abando expected to anchor their attack once more. Roberson turned in a dominant double-double with 17 points and 19 rebounds, imposing his will in the paint and helping turn the tide with a huge third-quarter rally. Abando filled the stat sheet with 11 points, three assists, two steals, two blocks, and two rebounds, showing his two-way prowess as Strong Group’s most versatile weapon on the wing. While their win over Chinese Taipei was convincing in the end, Strong Group had to overcome early jitters, something they’ll hope to avoid against a feisty Japan U25 side that eked out a thrilling 86-84 win over Qatar B. Masahiro Waki (193-F/G-2002) exploded for 27 points in that game and is expected to be Japan’s focal point on offense. Import Ian Miller (191-G-1991, college: FSU, agency: Diamond Sports), who struggled with his shot in the opener (5-of-17), is another player to watch as he tries to bounce back and provide more firepower for Strong Group. A win would keep the Philippines unbeaten at 2-0, reinforcing their bid to retain the Jones Cup crown—and Roberson and Abando look more than ready to lead the charge again.
