PBA Round 18: No surprise as #1 Bay Area D. defeat TNT Tropang

PBA top team - Bay Area D. (10-2) had no problems winning another game on Wednesday. This time they crushed ninth ranked TNT Tropang (4-7) in Hong Kong 140-108. Bay Area D. looked well-organized offensively handing out 32 assists comparing to just 15 passes made by TNT Tropang's players. American guard Myles Powell (188-1997, college: Seton Hall) scored 37 points (!!!), 6 rebounds and 7 assists to lead the charge for the winners and Canadian guard Kobey Lam (190-2000, college: Charleston) chipped in 30 points and 6 rebounds during the contest. The best for the losing side was American Matt Mobley (195-1994, college: St.Bonaventure) with 38 points (!!!) and 5 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Bay Area D. have a solid four-game winning streak. Newly promoted Bay Area D. maintains first position with 10-2 record. TNT Tropang lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the tenth place with seven games lost. They share the position with NLEX RW. Bay Area D. will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. TNT Tropang will play on the road against SM Beermen (#6) in Manila and is hoping to prove to their fans that they can break losing series.
Important game to mention about took place in Manila. Eleventh ranked NLEX RW (4-7) saved a 3-point victory on the road edging higher ranked Ginebra Kings (7-3) 120-117 on Friday evening. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of Ginebra Kings. American Earl Clark (208-1988, college: Louisville) notched a double-double by scoring 37 points (!!!), 17 rebounds and 7 assists to lead the effort and Celedonio Trollano supported him with 26 points and 6 rebounds. Even a double-double of 39 points (!!!), 11 rebounds and 5 assists by American forward Justin Brownlee (197-1988, college: St.John's) did not help to save the game for Ginebra Kings. NLEX RW moved-up to tenth place, which they share with TNT Tropang. Ginebra Kings at the other side keep the fourth position with three games lost. NLEX RW will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Ginebra Kings will play on the road against North Port (#5) in Pasig City and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

In the last two games of round 18 SM Beermen destroyed Terrafirma Dyip on the opponent's court 131-103. Blackwater Elite was outscored by Rain or Shine in a home game 97-116.

Terrafirma Dyip - SM Beermen 103-131

Very expected game in Makati City where 13th ranked Terrafirma Dyip (1-10) was crushed by eighth ranked SM Beermen (5-5) 131-103. SM Beermen dominated down low during the game scoring 82 of its points in the paint compared to Terrafirma Dyip's 44. They outrebounded Terrafirma Dyip 56-44 including a 46-31 advantage in defensive rebounds. SM Beermen players were unselfish on offense dishing 33 assists. Terrafirma Dyip was plagued by 30 personal fouls down the stretch. American power forward Devon Scott (206-1994, college: Dayton) notched a triple-double by scoring 21 points, 19 rebounds and 11 assists to lead the effort and center June Mar Fajardo (210-1989) supported him with 20 points and 9 rebounds. Five SM Beermen players scored in double figures. Even 28 points and 4 assists (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line) by guard Juan Tiongson (178-1991) did not help to save the game for Terrafirma Dyip. Javier Gomez De Liano (195-1998) added 17 points. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Defending champion moved-up to sixth place. Terrafirma Dyip at the other side stay at the bottom position with ten games lost. SM Beermen will play against TNT Tropang (#11) in Makati in the next round where they are favorite. Terrafirma Dyip will play on the road against Phoenix in Quezon to get more than just one victory in their record.

American forward Ryan Pearson (198-1990, college: GMU, agency: Inception Sports) notched a double-double by scoring 22 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists to lead the effort and guard Rey Nambatac (179-1994) supported him with 21 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Even a double-double of 23 points, 17 rebounds and 4 assists by American center Cameron Krutwig (206-1998, college: Loyola, IL) did not help to save the game for Blackwater Elite. Renato Ular added 7 points and 14 rebounds. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Rain or Shine moved-up to seventh place, which they share with Phoenix. Blackwater Elite lost sixth consecutive game. They keep the twelfth position with nine games lost.
