PBA Round 5: Blackwater Elite defeat SM Beermen

The most crucial game of the last round was the first loss of SM Beermen (0-1) in Caloocan City on Wednesday night. Visitors were edged by eighth ranked Blackwater Elite (2-2) 109-106. Blackwater Elite looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. American center Cameron Krutwig (206-1998, college: Loyola, IL) orchestrated the victory with a triple-double by scoring 20 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists. point guard Baser Amer (180-1992, agency: BIG) contributed with 16 points for the winners. Center June Mar Fajardo (210-1989) answered with a double-double by scoring 23 points, 16 rebounds and 4 assists for SM Beermen. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Blackwater Elite moved-up to sixth place. Defending champion SM Beermen still closes the standings with one game lost. They share the position with TNT Tropang. Blackwater Elite will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. SM Beermen's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Manila Rain or Shine.
Important game to mention about took place in Pasig City. Leader Hotshots (3-0) saved a 2-point victory at home edging bottom-ranked TNT Tropang (0-1) 94-92 on Wednesday evening. Host team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. Serbian-American forward Nick Rakocevic (211-1997, college: USC, agency: Pensack Sports) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 15 rebounds for the winners and Calvin Abueva chipped in 25 points and 9 rebounds. American forward Cameron Oliver (203-1996, college: Nevada) responded with a double-double by scoring 43 points (!!!), 17 rebounds and 5 assists. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Hotshots have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain second place with 3-0 record behind leader Bay Area D. TNT Tropang at the other side still closes the standings with one game lost. They share the position with SM Beermen. Hotshots will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. TNT Tropang will play at home against North Port (#4) and hopes to get finally their first victory.
Meralco Bolts' fans can celebrate the first win of their team after two consecutive losses. The victory is especially important as it came on the road game in Makati City, where they defeated Terrafirma Dyip (0-4) 105-92 on Friday. Johnny O'Bryant III nailed a double-double by scoring 31 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists for the winning side. Lester Prosper came up with a double-double by scoring 35 points (!!!) and 18 rebounds for Terrafirma Dyip in the defeat. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. It was the only win of guest team this round and in all other games host teams recorded victories. Meralco Bolts (1-2) left bottom position moving up to eighth place, which they share with FiberXers. It was Terrafirma Dyip's fourth loss in a row. They still close the standings with four games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.

In the last game of round 5 FiberXers lost to undefeated Bay Area D. on the road 100-106.
The most impressive performance of 5th round was 38 points (!!!), 14 rebounds and 4 assists by Quincy Miller-Scott of FiberXers.

No shocking result in a game when leader Bay Area D. (4-0) beat 7th ranked FiberXers (1-2) in Hong Kong 106-100 on Friday. However just six-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. Bay Area D. looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. American guard Myles Powell (188-1997, college: Seton Hall) nailed 33 points (!!!) and 8 rebounds for the winning side and British-Canadian guard Glen Yang (193, college: Mount Royal) accounted for 23 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists. Four Bay Area D. players scored in double figures. American forward Quincy Miller-Scott (206-1992, college: Baylor) came up with a double-double by scoring 38 points (!!!), 14 rebounds and 4 assists and the former international forward Abu Jahal Tratter (196-1993) added 7 points and 9 rebounds respectively for FiberXers in the defeat. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Bay Area D. have a solid series of four victories in a row. Newly promoted Bay Area D. maintains first place with 4-0 record. Loser FiberXers dropped to the eighth position with two games lost. They share it with Meralco Bolts. Bay Area D. will meet Ginebra Kings (#7) in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. FiberXers will have a break next round.
