PBA Round 14 (Philippine Cup): SM Beermen edge Terrafirma Dyip by one point- July 15, 2022

Terrafirma Dyip - SM Beermen 108-109 Twelfth-ranked Terrafirma Dyip (0-9) made lots of trouble for first ranked SM Beermen (9-1) in Makati City on Thursday. The visitors from Manila managed to secure only one-point victory 109-108. However their fans expected much easier game. SM Beermen dominated down low during the game scoring 74 of its points in the paint compared to Terrafirma Dyip's 48. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists. The best player for the winners was center June Mar Fajardo (210-1989) who had a double-double by scoring 26 points, 10 rebounds and 9 assists. Naturalized American swingman Marcio Lassiter (190-1987, college: CS Fullerton) chipped in 23 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists. Point guard John Calvo (174-1997) produced 19 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists and Swedish forward Philip Cahilig (191-1991) added 17 points and 10 rebounds respectively for the hosts. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. SM Beermen have an impressive six-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 9-1 record. Terrafirma Dyip at the other side still closes the standings with nine games lost. Tenth ranked North Port (3-6) got a very close victory on the road over 11th ranked Phoenix (2-7). North Port managed to escape with a 3-point win 95-92 on Thursday evening. North Port looked well-organized offensively handing out 27 assists. Point guard Shej Roi Sumang (177-1991) scored 18 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists to lead the charge for the winners and guard Robert Bolick (185-1995) chipped in 17 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists during the contest. Naturalized Canadian guard Matthew Wright (193-1991, college: St.Bonaventure) responded with 20 points and 9 rebounds and Javee Mocon (193-1995) produced a double-double by scoring 14 points and 10 rebounds. Five North Port and four Phoenix players scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. North Port moved-up to ninth place, which they share with Rain or Shine. Phoenix lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the eleventh position with seven games lost. North Port will meet at home higher ranked Ginebra Kings (#4) in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Phoenix will play against FiberXers (#8) in Makati and hope to secure a win. NLEX RW dominated down low during the game scoring 50 of its points in the paint compared to Blackwater Elite's 28. NLEX RW forced 24 Blackwater Elite turnovers. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 22 assists. Blackwater Elite was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. Forward Calvin John Oftana (195-1996) orchestrated the victory by scoring 15 points and 8 rebounds. Guard Celedonio Trollano (191-1992) contributed with 16 points for the winners. Five NLEX RW players scored in double figures. Center Yousef Taha (201-1988, college: North Lake CC) replied with 9 points and 9 rebounds and Renato Ular added 8 points and 11 rebounds in the effort for Blackwater Elite. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. NLEX RW moved-up to seventh place. Blackwater Elite lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the fifth position with four games lost. They share it with Meralco Bolts. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest. Hotshots forced 21 Meralco Bolts turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Hotshots made 7 blocks. Point guard Jiovani Jalalon (175-1992) scored 19 points and 8 assists to lead the charge for the winners and point guard Andy Barroca (176-1988) chipped in 20 points, 6 assists and 5 steals during the contest. Four Hotshots players scored in double figures. Guard Chris Newsome (187-1990, college: Georgetown, KY) responded with 24 points and 5 assists and forward Aaron Black scored 13 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Hotshots (6-3) have an impressive five-game winning streak. They moved-up to third place, which they share with Ginebra Kings. Loser Meralco Bolts keep the fifth position with four games lost. They share it with Blackwater Elite. Hotshots will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Meralco Bolts will play against the league's leader SM Beermen (#1) and hope to secure a win.
