Back-to-back: TNT repeats over Barangay Ginebra to defend Governors’ Cup title in Game 6-Nov 8, 2024
TNT conquered Barangay Ginebra once again in a conference where the Gin Kings ruled for multiple years. The Tropang Giga reasserted their mastery over Ginebra as they defended their PBA Governors’ Cup throne following a come-from-behind 95-85 win in Game 6 of the finals at the Araneta Coliseum on Friday, November 8. Living up to his billing as a two-time Best Import, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (201-F/C-1995, college: Arizona) put up 31 points, 16 rebounds, 8 assists, and 2 steals, including key buckets late that took the fight out of a Gin Kings side looking to force a sudden death. Hollis-Jefferson scattered 5 points in a win-clinching 12-0 run TNT used to capture its 10th championship in franchise history after trailing 83-85 with under five minutes left. Jayson Castro William (180-PG-1986) backstopped Hollis-Jefferson with 13 points and 6 assists, while Roger Ray Pogoy (189-SG-1992) also added 13 points, including a back-breaking triple that gave the Tropang Giga a commanding 94-85 lead with a minute remaining. The Ginebra loss put to waste a sensational effort by Gin Kings rookie Rhon Jhay Abarrientos (181-G-1999), who exploded for a career-high 31 points on 11-of-17 shooting before a mammoth crowd of 14,668. Rhon Jhay Abarrientos fired 18 points in the second quarter alone as Ginebra fought back from a 21-31 deficit to mount a 43-42 halftime lead. The defeat also prevented Justin Brownlee from claiming his seventh title, which would have made him the winningest import in PBA history. Brownlee, who finished with 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists, won four of his six championships in the Governors’ Cup but lost the last two editions to Hollis-Jefferson and TNT. TNT stuns Ginebra in Game 7 overtime heart-stopper for 2nd straight PBA crown-Mar 28, 2025
Another championship duel against Barangay Ginebra still yielded the same result for TNT. The Tropang Giga reasserted their mastery over the Gin Kings and ruled the PBA Commissioner’s Cup after a dramatic 87-83 overtime escape in the winner-take-all Game 7 at the Araneta Coliseum on Friday, March 28. Import Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (201-F/C-1995, college: Arizona) won his third title with TNT, churning out 25 points and 12 rebounds in the rubber match as the Tropang Giga claimed their second straight crown and remained on track for a rare Grand Slam before a mammoth crowd of 21,274. But it was the locals who took charge in overtime, with Glenn Khobuntin (193-F-1991) surprisingly coming through the clutch as Rey Nambatac (179-G-1994) and Calvin-John Oftana (195-F-1996) also giving TNT a big lift. Ginebra still had a chance to force another extra period as Justin Brownlee (197-F-1988, college: St.John's) — who knocked in a cold-blooded three with 16.7 seconds left in the fourth, 79-79, to forge overtime — missed a potential game-tying four-point shot. Nambatac, who backstopped Hollis-Jefferson with 22 points, captured the Finals MVP after averaging 17.8 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 3.4 assists in the tight finals series. Khobuntin emerged as TNT’s Game 7 wild card, knocking in 10 of his 14 points in crucial stretches in the fourth quarter and overtime. Also topping the Governors’ Cup behind Hollis-Jefferson earlier this season, TNT captured its 11th championship in franchise history, with head coach Chot Reyes also having as many titles. The win marked the third consecutive time the Tropang Giga beat Ginebra in the finals — a streak that started when they also beat the Gin Kings for the 2023 Governors’ Cup throne. San Miguel dominates Game 6 to reclaim PBA throne, keeps TNT out of Grand Slam club-Jul 26, 2025
San Miguel shut the door on an opponent seeking history and reclaimed its place atop the PBA hierarchy. The Beermen ruled the season-ending Philippine Cup and kept TNT out of the elite Grand Slam club once again after a dominant 107-96 win in Game 6 of the best-of-seven finals at the PhilSports Arena on Friday, July 23. CJ Perez, June Mar Fajardo (210-C-1989), and Jericho Cruz (182-G-1990) took turns as San Miguel ended a three-conference title drought and captured a record-extending 30th championship, with 11 of those coming in the prestigious All-Filipino tiff. Perez bounced back from a measly 5-point outing in their Game 5 loss with a series-high 24 points, 6 assists, and 3 rebounds, while Fajardo turned in a near-perfect outing of 24 points on a 11-of-12 shooting to go with 12 rebounds. Cruz, who captured his first Finals MVP award, chimed in 13 points and 6 assists, sparking a big third quarter that broke the game wide open. The Tropang 5G were within striking distance, trailing 52-56 early in the third period before the Beermen unleashed a 24-8 run, with 9 points coming from Cruz, to mount a commanding 80-60 lead. History repeated itself as the Beermen prevented the Tropang 5G from achieving the rare Triple Crown, just like they did over a decade ago. Then known as the Talk ’N Text Tropang Texters, TNT won the first two championships of the 2010-2011 season only to lose to the Petron Blaze Boosters — now San Miguel — in seven games in the Governors’ Cup finals. It was another heartbreaking ending for the Tropang 5G, who missed out on joining Crispa (1976, 1983), San Miguel (1989), Alaska (1996), and San Mig Coffee (2013-2014) in Grand Slam company.
