SMB reigns supreme after great comeback over Magnolia in Game 6-Feb 14, 2024
THE PBA 48th Season Commissioner’s Cup championship belongs to San Miguel, thanks to an epic comeback in Game Six. Jaymar Perez (188-G-1993), Jericho Cruz (182-G-1990) and Chris Ross (185-G-1985, college: Marshall) nailed critical shots in the final stretch as San Miguel beat Magnolia, 104-102, on Wednesday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum, gifting the franchise a 29th league title in a Valentines’ Day to remember for the Beermen and their fans. Perez and Cruz conspired in a critical run that enabled the Beermen to come alive after trailing by 13 points, 67-54, in the third quarter and by 11 at 90-79 with only minutes to go in the final quarter. Chris Ross nailed the corner three with 1:23 left to give San Miguel the lead for good, 100-99. The Beermen continued to wax hot with Perez draining a three with 48.7 seconds to increase the gap to four points. When Aris Dionisio (193-F-1995)'s last-gasp three-point attempt bounced off the rim, the Beermen wrapped up the best-of-seven series, 4-2, while extending a Magnolia drought since it last won a championship in the 2018 Governors’ Cup. Paul Lee nailed a three-pointer to put Magnolia ahead, 98-92, in what looked like a pivotal moment for the Hotshots. But Perez responded with a lay-up, and Cruz had a steal that led to a three-point conversion to cut the gap to 98-97. The momentum shift was just too difficult to overcome for Magnolia by then. “It feels great. Everybody worked hard for his – from the coaches to the staff to the PTs, and especially the players. They didn’t give up,†said San Miguel coach Jorge Gallent after winning his first title as PBA coach. Perez finished with 28 points on his way to winning the Finals MVP trophy while June Mar Fajardo (210-C-1989) collected 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Beermen, whose 103-99 lead was the biggest of the contest. Bennie Boatwright (208-F-1996, college: USC) had 19 points, 13 rebounds, and eight assists for the Beermen as he made up for his 1-of-8 shooting from threes. Lee had 25 points in a losing cause on his 35th birthday while import Tyler Bey had 18 points and eight rebounds for the Hotshots. Courtesy of: spin.ph

Back-to-back: TNT repeats over Barangay Ginebra to defend Governors’ Cup title in Game 6-Nov 8, 2024
TNT conquered Barangay Ginebra once again in a conference where the Gin Kings ruled for multiple years. The Tropang Giga reasserted their mastery over Ginebra as they defended their PBA Governors’ Cup throne following a come-from-behind 95-85 win in Game 6 of the finals at the Araneta Coliseum on Friday, November 8. Living up to his billing as a two-time Best Import, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (201-F/C-1995, college: Arizona) put up 31 points, 16 rebounds, 8 assists, and 2 steals, including key buckets late that took the fight out of a Gin Kings side looking to force a sudden death. Hollis-Jefferson scattered 5 points in a win-clinching 12-0 run TNT used to capture its 10th championship in franchise history after trailing 83-85 with under five minutes left. Jayson Castro William (180-PG-1986) backstopped Hollis-Jefferson with 13 points and 6 assists, while Roger Ray Pogoy (189-SG-1992) also added 13 points, including a back-breaking triple that gave the Tropang Giga a commanding 94-85 lead with a minute remaining. The Ginebra loss put to waste a sensational effort by Gin Kings rookie Rhon Jhay Abarrientos (181-G-1999), who exploded for a career-high 31 points on 11-of-17 shooting before a mammoth crowd of 14,668. Rhon Jhay Abarrientos fired 18 points in the second quarter alone as Ginebra fought back from a 21-31 deficit to mount a 43-42 halftime lead. The defeat also prevented Justin Brownlee from claiming his seventh title, which would have made him the winningest import in PBA history. Brownlee, who finished with 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists, won four of his six championships in the Governors’ Cup but lost the last two editions to Hollis-Jefferson and TNT.
