2014 PBA Governors Cup Finals: GRAND SLAM for SMC!!!
- Jul 9, 2014
Game recaps by Rey Joble/InterAKTV:
SAN MIG SUPER COFFEE over RAIN OR SHINE, 92-89
The San Mig Coffee Mixers clinched a historic Grand Slam something
accomplished just four times prior in PBA history after barely edging Rain
or Shine, 92-89, in a classic do-or-die Game Five in the PLDT Home Telpad
Governors Cup on Wednesday at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.
San Mig Coffee clinched a fourth straight championship and completed a
historic sweep of all three conferences this season to give coach Tim Cone
his 18th career championship and the honor of being the only coach to win
the Grand Slam twice.
James Yap posted 29 points and eight rebounds while import Marqus Blakely
missed out on a triple-double with 20 points, 16 rebounds and nine assists
in a tremendous showing in a high-pressure closeout game.
Joe Devance added 11 points while Yaps fellow Big Three members each scored
10.
Rain or Shine was led by Best Import of the Conference Arizona Reid, who was
hobbled with an ankle injury but came alive to score 19 of his 23 points in
the second half, and Paul Lee, who scored 21.
San Mig Coffee led by five points, 43-38, at the half with Yap scoring 14
points over the first two periods.
The Mixers then opened the third with a 14-6 run that opened up a 57-44 lead
before pushing the advantage up to a whopping 16 points, 69-53, later in the
period.
But the hobbling Reid finally got his game going. After scoring just four
points in the first half, he scored 11 in the third quarter, including nine
in a 17-4 Rain or Shine run as the Elasto Painters attacked the basket and
crashed the boards late.
They cut the San Mig Coffee advantage to just three, 73-70, at the end of
the third.
Rain or Shine backup Jonathan Uyloan scored on a layup at the top of the
final period to bring the Elasto Painters to as close as a single point,
73-72.
But Yap came to the rescue for San Mig Coffee, hitting on a putback and a
three-pointer to spark a 9-2 run that put the Mixers up by a more
comfortable eight points, 82-74, with 7:10 remaining.
But the Elasto Painters were not yet done, Beau Belga and Reid led Rain or
Shine as they got their running game going yet again, coming to within
three, 90-87, at the last two minute mark of the contest.
Yap then hit a one-handed bank shot that Reid quickly countered on the other
end.
But the final 1:30 of the game saw neither team score a basket as San Mig
Coffee clinched the elusive triple crown.
Reid had a chance to send the game into overtime at the end but could not
make his final shot.

2014 PBA Commissioners Cup Finals: Mixers rally in
the fourth to upend TNT and win third straight title!
- May 15, 2014
With their team down by nine early in the
fourth quarter of Game 4, James Yap and Mark Barroca took it upon themselves
to lead their club in storming back and copping the 2014 PBA Commissioners
Cup crown at the expense of the Talk N Text Tropang Texters, 100-91. Yap
capped a huge 17-4 run in the final frame that erased the aforementioned
deficit and put SMC on top for good, 93-89, inside the final two minutes.
Barroca, for his part, outplayed TNTs Jayson Castro on both ends to preserve
the win for SMC. Yap had 10 points and 5 rebounds for the game, while
Barroca dropped a game-high 22 points.
This was a sorry result for the Texters, who won their first thirteen games
of the conference before losing three of their last four in the Finals. In
the last two outings, TNT actually held the lead in the fourth before
succumbing to errors and clutch shooting from the Mixers. Ace player Jayson
Castro also struggled in this one, making just 5 points on a peculiar 1/5 FG
shooting performance. He had just 3 assists along with 4 turnovers.
Three-Peat: This serves as the third straight title romp for the Mixers, who
also pocketed the 2013 Governors Cup and the 2013-2014 Philippine Cup. This
effectively gives SMC an unconventional grand slam mainly because the three
titles bridge two seasons. Should they continue their title-winning ways in
the next conference, then they will formally notch the elusive PBA Grand
Slam. This is now Tim Cones seventeenth overall PBA title and his fourth
after leaving Alaska for the Purefoods franchise.
Game recap by Rey Joble/InterAKTV:
SAN MIG SUPER COFFEE over TALK N TEXT, 100-91
The San Mig Super Coffee Mixers rallied past the Talk N Text Tropang Texters
for a 100-91 victory in Game Four to win the PLDT Home TVolution
Commissioners Cup on Thursday at PhilSports Arena.
The Mixers won the third jewel in the PBAs triple crown and moved one more
tournament away from winning the leagues coveted Grand Slam.
But San Mig Coffee had to go through the eye of the needle against a proud
Tropang Texters side determined to go down fighting.
Talk N Text started out like a house on fire, opening the game with a 17-1
run.
At halftime, I screamed at the guys, I yelled at them, told them, You want
to rest already for Game Five? said San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone.
Im amazed, I thought they cant do it, but this team has proven me wrong over
and over again. Our guys didnt want to quit, they just kept on battling.
The Tropang Texters remained in control in the third quarter with a 68-53
advantage. But the Mixers made their move, unleashing a furious 16-0 run
powered by rookie Ian Sangalang to take a 69-68 edge.
But San Mig Coffees lead was short-lived after Jayson Castro and Jimmy
Alapag nailed back-to-back three-pointers to end the third period with a
74-69 lead.
Talk N Text surged ahead for an 85-76 early in the final quarter, before the
Mixers came charging back. A 17-4 run capped by a three-pointer from James
Yap gave San Mig Coffee the lead for good, 93-89, with two minutes left to
play.
Mark Barroca put the finishing touches on the game with big shots down the
stretch to put Talk N Text away.
The Purefoods franchise won its 12th title in franchise history and the
fourth under coach Tim Cone, who padded his total as the PBAs winningest
coach with 17 championships.
It was a disappointing finish for Talk N Text, who blazed through the
tournament with 13 straight wins prior to the finals.
But San Mig Coffee turned out to be the tougher team despite going through
grueling battles in the playoffs against Alaska and Air 21.

2014 PBA Philippine Cup Finals: Barroca and Sangalang lead Mixers to the
title! - Feb
26, 2014
The Mixers closed it out plain and simple. After squandering their 17-point
lead in the first half and then falling behind to begin the fourth quarter,
the wards of coach Tim Cone buckled down to work and leaned on their star
point guard to secure the sixth All-Filipino title of the franchise. Mar
Barroca teamed up with Ian Sangalang and PJ Simon in the fourth quarter to
turn a deficit into a 79-70 lead with about 7 minutes to go. Paul Lee and
Beau Belga continued to put ROS within striking distance with big shots in
the dying minutes, but, again, Barroca rose to the fore and hammered the
nails on the coffin as SMC annexed coach Tims sixteenth PBA title.
Once again, Rain or Shine head coach Yeng Guiao stole the show, leading a
walkout early in the second period and then getting sent off the floor
before the end of the game. Because of these, it stands to reason that coach
Yeng and the Painters will probably be meted hefty fines, which isnt at all
surprising given their recent history. Some might even argue that the
Painters still had a shot at stealing the match in the endgame had Guiao
actually remained in the game and kept his cool. Oh well, at least he didnt
prance and dance on the sidelines like Jim Boeheim. Or, then again, maybe he
should have.
Is Barroca the best now?: Given how he has been, until
recently, the Mixers top scorer this conference, and now that hes been named
the Finals MVP, is it safe to say Mark Barroca has reached the top tier and
has, in fact, become the leagues top point guard? Thats a little tough, of
course, given how we still have guys like Jayson Castro, Sol Mercado, and LA
Tenorio to consider, but, man, Barroca has just been on a different level
this season. He has been up and down, yes, but, generally speaking, he has
delivered in the clutch for the Mixers. In this game, he scored 24 points,
shooting 9/16 from the field and 4/5 form the line while also grabbing 3
rebounds, handing out 5 assists, and getting 2 steals. His season averages
so far are: 12.9ppg, 4.6rpg, 4.3apg, 2.0spg, and 32.0 EFF. The only PGs with
better EFF ratings are Castro and Mercado.
Game Recap:
SAN MIG SUPER COFFEE over RAIN OR SHINE, 93-87
The San Mig Super
Coffee Mixers closed out the gritty Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in Game
Six, 93-87, to win the PLDT Home DSL Philippine Cup on Wednesday at SMART-Araneta
Coliseum.
Third-year guard Mark Barroca scored 24 points, including
10 of the Mixers final 12 points, while rookie Ian Sangalang added 15 points
to lead San Mig Coffee.
The championship gives San Mig Coffee coach
Tim Cone a record 16th PBA title, pushing him past the legendary Baby
Dalupan in the leagues all-time list.
It also gives the Purefoods
franchise its sixth All-Filipino trophy the most of any team in PBA history.
The team also won the leagues most prestigious title in 1991, 1993, 1997,
2006, and 2010.
The star trio of Yap, Simon, and Pingris also won
their third Philippine Cup crown, putting them on par with the legendary
Purefoods duo of Alvin Patrimonio and Jerry Codinera, who led the team to
its first three All-Filipino titles.
It is also the first
back-to-back titles in the 26-year history of the franchise after winning
last seasons Governors Cup.
Near walkout
San Mig Coffee took
control early, scoring the first eight points of the game before opening up
a 28-15 advantage on a three-pointer from James Yap late in the first
period.
The Mixers were still leading, 30-17, when Rain or Shine
coach Yeng Guiao instructed his team to walk off the court after a foul call
on Elasto Painters center JR Quinahan.
Sports5 reporter Erika Padilla
was told by Guiao that the walkoff was an expression of the teams resentment
on the calls of the refs.
The Elasto Painters eventually returned to
the court, but the delay barely dampened the play of the Mixers. Behind its
energetic second unit, San Mig Coffee pushed the advantage to as much as 17
points several times in the second quarter.
But just when it looked
dead in the water, Rain or Shine came alive, scoring the final 11 points of
the first half to cut the San Mig Coffee lead to just six points, 49-43.
Tight second half
The Elasto Painters continued to threaten in the
third period, coming within a single point, 51-50, on a three-pointer from
Jireh Ibanes.
San Mig Coffee pushed back behind superstar Yap, who
scored four points in a quick 7-2 run for a 58-52 edge.
But Rain or
Shine rattled off a 13-4 blast capped by back-to-back three-pointers from
Chris Tiu and Paul Lee for a 65-62 lead with three minutes left in the third
quarter.
It was San Mig Coffees turn to strike back, with Simon,
Barroca, and Sangalang combining for a 17-5 attack to give the Mixers a
79-70 advantage with 6:59 left in the game.
Lee nailed a much-needed
three-pointer in the ensuing play for Rain or Shine, cutting the deficit to
six points. He followed that up a couple of plays later with a steal on
Sangalang and a fastbreak layup.
After a Pingris basket, Lee nailed
another three-pointer to cut the San Mig Coffee lead to just three, 81-78,
with less than five minutes remaining.
Barroca takes over
Mark
Barroca nailed a three-point play with 2:44 left to give San Mig Coffee more
cushion, 84-78. After a Belga layup, Barroca replied with a three-pointer
over the outstretched arms of Gabe Norwood.
Belga responded with his
own three-point play to push Rain or Shine within four, 87-83, with 1:49
left.
Barroca scored on a drive, before Belga nailed a three-pointer
as the Elasto Painters came within one possession, 89-86.
Pingris
made two free throws in the next play to put the Mixers ahead by five with
1:07 to go.
Lee had two good looks from three-point range in the next
possession, but missed both times. Rain or Shine was still able to recover
the ball, but Lee turned the ball over while being shadowed by Pingris with
37.6 seconds left.
The Elasto Painters sent Barroca to the line,
where the third-year guard split his free throws for a 92-86 advantage with
29.4 seconds left.
Lee drew a foul on Pingris in the next play. He
hit the first but missed the second, but Rain or Shine was able to recover
possession of the ball.
Guiao, however, grabbed the ball from referee
Jimmy Mariano on the inbounds, resulting in his second technical foul and
ejection. Barroca nailed the technical free throw to seal the deal for the
Mixers.
