2011 PBA Commissioners Cup Finals Game 6: Talk N Text over Bgy. Ginebra, 99-96 - May 23, 2011

Jimmy Alapag (178-G-77, college: Cal.St.-San Bernar.), Jason Castro (173-G-86), and Ranidel De Ocampo made the timely hits in the endgame to stretch the game into overtime and seal the deal for Talk N Text.

Alapag, the Best Player of the Conference, netted 24 points while Castro and De Ocampo conspired to help the diminutive guard lead the Texters to the Commissioners Cup Crown! The terrific trio combined for 9 triples and none were bigger than the ones they hit in the endgame to clinch the title for coach Chot Reyes.

TNT import Paul Harris also gave a good account of himself, finishing with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocks.

It was a sorry loss for the Bgy. Ginebra Gin Kins, as they led practically most of the game until some endgame misses and lapses handed the title to TNT. The Kings were led by import Nate Brumfields monster output of 18 points, 22 boards, and 4 assists. Locals Willie Miller, JC Intal, as well as rookies John Wilson and Rob Labagala also gave good accounts of themselves, combining for 12 triples.

With this win, TNT gave 3-time Coach of the Year awardee Chot Reyes his 5th PBA title.

It was a wonderful game worthy of the championship billing, certainly more entertaining than Pacquiaos dominance over Shane Mosley earlier in the day.

Ginebra controlled the tempo most of the way, but the Texters proved sterner in the end, especially since the inexperience of rookies Wilson and Labagala showed. Alapag again made a good case for him being one of the best, 'if not the best, guard in the country. Perhaps coach Rajko Toroman can keep a slot open for him in Smart-Gilas in time for the FIBA-Asia tourney later in the year?

Congratulations to the TNT Tropang Texters!

Talk N' Text 99 - Alapag 24, Castro 19, Harris 18, De Ocampo 18, Williams 10, Peek 10, Reyes 0, Fonacier 0, Carey 0.

Ginebra 96 - Miller 21, Brumfield 18, Intal 17, J. Wilson 14, Labagala 8, Caguioa 6, Menk 5, Cortez 3, Mamaril 2, Hatfield 2, Tubid 0.

Hala Bola! 2011 PBA All-Star Weekend Updates Round 2! - May 23, 2011

PBA Legends yield to Young Guns in All-Star Shootout!

How it happened: Ronald Tubid (186-G-81), Mark Macapagal (188-G-79) and Jimmy Alapag (178-G-77, college: Cal.St.-San Bernar.) outgunned the retired trio of Allan Caidic, Alvin Patrimonio and Ato Agustin in the Legends 3-Point Shootout right before the All-Star Game.

The young uns started hot as Alapag beat Patrimonio, 12-10, then Tubid just outshone Agustin, 18-9.

Caidic then managed 12 points, all Macapagal needed to do was make two points for the victory. He made 13.

North All-Stars beat the South All-Stars!

Chot Reyes cannot win every game. He may have two titles under his belt for 2011, but this time around someone else got the best of him. He now totes a 0-4 record as an All-Star coach.

Derby Ace's Marc Pingris (195-C-81) led all scorers with 24 points to pace the North All-Stars past the Southerners, 133-129. Pingris was also the one who canned the pivotal basket with only 12.4 ticks left as he received a drop pass from LA Tenorio of the Alaska Aces. Pingris was eventually named All-Star MVP.

Aside from Pingris, the North team saw great production from Arwind Santos and Willie Miller as they finished with 21 and 16 points respectively. Air 21s Dondon Hontiveros led the South All-Stars with 19 points.

Hala Bola! 2011 PBA All-Star Weekend Updates! - May 21, 2011

Slam Dunk Contest Winner: Kelly Williams (198-F-82, college: Oakland) of Talk N Text

How he did it: He caught a pass from teammate Jimmy Alapag, who was way up in the stands, and slammed it home with two hands!

It was a cakewalk for Williams as rivals Gabe Norwood and Jay Washington did not participate and finals competitor Rey Guevarra missed his final dunk.

Aside from Guevarra, Williams bested Elmer Espiritu, JC Intal, Ronald Tubid and Josh Vanlandingham.

Three-point Contest Winner: Mark Macapagal (188-G-79) of Coca-Cola
How he did it: He scored 17 points in the Final Round while Ronald Tubid had 16 and Jimmy Alapag only 15 to repeat as the 3-point king of the PBA.

Other participants were Dondon Hontiveros, James Yap, Joe Devance, Macmac Cardona, Sunday Salvacion and Ronjay Buenafe.

Strangely enough, Mark almost did not make the Final Round, producing only 12 points in the elimination round. He beat Salvacion by 1 to enter the final phase.

Obstacle Challenge Winner: Jonas Villanueva (184-G-83) of B-Meg Derby Ace
How he did it: He set a record by finishing the course in 29.5 seconds only the fastest ever.

Eliminated early were Josh Urbiztondo, LA Tenorio, Miller, Alex Cabagnot, Sean Anthony (193-F-86), and Jimmy Alapag.

Rookies blast Sophomores in the Blitz Game!
Barangay Ginebra's Robert Labagala (175-G) and Powerade's Sean Anthony combined to produce a speedy backcourt that led the way for the Rookies. They defeated the Sophomores 114-109.

Labagala, a second round pick reserve and former UE Red Warrior, scored 25 points and dished out 8 assists, grabbed 3 rebounds and had a steal.

For his part, Anthony finished with a near-triple double: 12 points, 11 boards and 7 dimes. Both he and Labagala were named Co-MVPs of the game.

The Sophomores were led by Larry Rodriguezs 27 points and 15 rebounds even as Jervy Cruz added 21 points and a Blitz Game record 18 rebounds.

Hala Bola! The 2011 PBA All-Star Weekend in Boracay - /span> May 16, 2011

This years PBA All-Star Weekend promises to be extra unique as the PBA stars invade the island paradise of Boracay from May 18-22, 2011.

Aside from the North vs. South All-Star Game, which is the main attraction of the 22nd edition of the spectacle, there are a host of skills events and the Rookies vs. Sophomores Blitz Game that should enthrall fans and tourists alike.

In last years All-Star Game, the North stars escaped the Souths challenge, 133-130, and Im sure the Southerners will want some payback.

The All-Star MVP then, Gabe Norwood (196-G/F-85, college: George Mason) (Rain or Shine), is once again expected to give a great all-around performance. Out to help him are the following:

North Starters: Marc Pingris (195-C-81) (Derby Ace), Kerby Raymundo (199-C-81) (Derby Ace), Mark Caguioa (188-G-79, college: Glendale CC (AZ)) (Ginebra) and Willie Miller (180-G-77) (Ginebra).

North Reserves: LA Tenorio (178-G-84) (Alaska), Mark Cardona (180-G/F-81) (Meralco), Ranidel de Ocampo (Talk n Text), Harvey Carey (191-F-79, college: Sonoma St.) (Talk n Text), Rabeh Al-Hussaini (199-F/C-88) (San Miguel Beer), Arwind Santos (193-F-81) (San Miguel Beer) and Alex Cabagnot (183-G-82, college: Hawaii-Hilo) (San Miguel Beer).

NNorth Coach: Ato Agustin (San Miguel Beer).

And leading the Southern push is James Yap/a> (191-F/G-82) (Derby Ace), who garnered the most fan votes. Aiding him are:

South Starters:
Jay Washington (206-C-81, college: Eckerd) (San Miguel Beer), Kelly Williams (198-F-82, college: Oakland) (Talk n Text), Eric Menk (199-F-74, college: L.Superior) (Ginebra) and Cyrus Baguio (188-G-80) (Alaska).

South Reserves: Jimmy Alapag (178-G-77, college: Cal.St.-San Bernar.) (Talk n Text), PJ Simon (Derby Ace), Asi Taulava (206-C-73, college: BYU-Hawaii) (Meralco), Dondon Hontiveros (188-G-77) (Air21), Danny Seigle (198-F/G-76, college: Wagner) (Air21), Joe Devance (201-C-82, college: UTEP) (Alaska) and Sonny Thoss (Alaska).

South Coach: Chot Reyes (Talk n Text).

Skills Events Participants:

Slam Dunk Contest: Kelly Williams, Gabe Norwood, Jay Washington, JC Intal, Ronald Tubid, Elmer Espiritu, and Rey Guevarra.

3-Point Shootout: Mark Macapagal, Jimmy Alapag, Dondon Hontiveros, James James Yap, Mark Cardona, Joe Devance, Ronald Tubid, Ronjay Buenafe and Sunday Salvacion.

*There is also a special side-event shootout involving the top three finishers and PBA greats Alvin Patrimonio, Ato Agustin and Allan Caidic.

Obstacle Challenge: Jonas Villanueva, Jimmy Alapag, Ronjay Buenafe, Alex Cabagnot, Willie Miller, LA Tenorio, Chris Ross, Josh Urbiztondo and Sean Anthony.

It seems like the PBA brass are pulling no punches and sparing no expense to make this years staging of the All-Star Weekend really distinct and memorable. It should bolster the already bursting-at-the-seams tourism industry in Boracay, and expose the PBA players to foreign presence. It also seems apt that the All-Star Weekend is only a few weeks removed from the end of the Commissioners Cup, securing attention for the league in-between conferences.

So what are you waiting for? Grab your beach suits, camera, and book that ticket! Time to go to Bora, enjoy the beach, and be spellbound by the 22nd PBA All-Star Weekend! Hala

Texters finish off SMB, clinch Philippine Cup

San Miguel - Talk N Text 82-95
Talk 'N Text's vaunted offense couldn't have clicked at a better time. Playing like a well-oiled machine and sustaining their brilliance on the offensive end all-game long, the Tropang Texters finally finished off the San Miguel Beermen, 95-82, to regain the PBA Philippine Cup title before an animated crowd of 15,756 at the Araneta Coliseum Friday night. Jimmy Alapag (178-G-77, college: Cal.St.-San Bernar.) anchored the Tropang Texters' big scoring run in the final period of Game 6 to quash the last of several furious comebacks by the Beermen and wrap up the best-of-seven series, 4-2. Talk 'N Text coach Ryan Reyes (188-G-83, college: Cerritos JC) gives the thumbs up sign after his Tropang Texters defeated San Miguel Beer, 95-82, in Game 6 of the PBA Philippine Cup best-of-seven championship series at the Araneta Coliseum. Ali Peek (194-F-75, college: St.Mary's, CA) also had 15 points, Harvey Carey 13, Ranidel deOcampo (195-F-81) 12, while Kelly Williams (198-F-82, college: Oakland) came through with a brilliant all-around game of 10 points, eight rebounds and four steals in a balanced scoring parade for the Tropang Texters. The championship is the third for the Talk 'N Text franchise since acquiring the team in 1996, and the sixth overall for coach Ryan Reyes, who now joins Tommy Manotoc at fifth place in the all-time winners' list. Reyes also steered Talk 'N Text to the 2008-09 All-Filipino championship during his first season with the telecommunication franchise. As the celebration began, Reyes went up to where team owner Manny V. Pangilinan was seated behind the team bench to personally congratulate him. 'This series is for Allan Reyes,' said the Talk 'N Text coach, obviously referring to the late brother of point guard Ryan Reyes, who died in a vehicular accident in the U.S. during the heat of the best-of-seven title series. Ryan missed Game 3 of the Finals to attend his brother's burial. 'But we'd also like to congratulate San Miguel for giving us a good fight,' said the Tropang Texters mentor. The championship also erased the stigma of the team's disappointing season a year ago, one which saw the Tropang Texters fail to win a title after getting eliminated twice in the playoffs despite being overwhelming favorites - including the walkout-marred best-of-five quarterfinals series with Ginebra. For the Beermen, there would be no championship for coach Ato Agustin right on his rookie season, no championship for Jay Washington in his first Finals encounter against the team that traded him three years ago, and no additional championship for veteran Olsen Racela right on his final playing year after 18 seasons in the league. Only Washington carried the fight for San Miguel, leading the team with 29 points and 18 rebounds, as the rest of the Beermen failed to give support to their main man. Dondon Hontiveros (188-G-77) had 11 points and Arwind Santos (193-F-81) 10, but only two of those came in the first three quarters of the deciding game. The Beermen trailed by as many as 14 in the first half, but battled their way back and even grabbed the lead at 57-55 on two free throws by Washington with 6:52 to play in the third period. But the Tropang Texters went on a 14-5 tear to take a 69-62 lead with them entering the finals quarter. San Miguel last closed in at 76-71 on a three-pointer by Washington, but Alapag led the Texters on a 9-0 spurt to pull away again at 85-71. - Courtesy of JVP, KY, GMANews.TV (taken from www.pba-online.ph)
