We won 12 titles before but this 13th PBA title is the sweetest because it was so hard to win. We had to scramble from the start. Then we had to beat Ginebra. Then it was Talk n Text in seven games. This is so special considering those great teams, those great coaches. It is so sweet to win, said Alaska coach Tim Cone. In the process the Aces won their 13th PBA title tying the record of the storied Crispa Redmanizers. The Beermen, who joined the PBA a decade ahead of Alaska, still lead the league with the most PBA championships with 18 titles. Mick Pennisi drained back-to-back triples to push the Beermen within nine points of the Alaska lead, 93-84, with still 4:29 to go in the game. But Diamon Simpson (201-F-87, college: St.Mary's, CA) hit a pair of crucial baskets to tow the Aces to victory. Simpson had another dominant performance scoring 28 points, grabbing 19 rebounds, tallying five blocks, issuing three assists and coming up with one steal. He (Simpson) is the one guy no else had an answer for, said coach Tim. He is young, he is energetic. They just did not have an answer for him. Cyrus Baguio had 24 markers to go with three rebounds and two steals. Cyrus is just scratching the surface of his potential, said coach Tim. He is still not doing the little things like using a screen well. He is getting by on sheer athleticism. The triangle offense is built for him and the sky is the limit as to how good he can become. Joe Devance scored 14 points, grabbed four rebounds, had one assist and one steal. LA Tenorio had 12 markers, 11 assists and six rebounds. The key to the series was the maturation of Joe and LA, said coach Tim. Joe is actually our leading local scorer. His contributions cannot be underestimated. He certainly does not get enough credit. Sonny Thoss - back in the starting lineup after Tony Dela Cruz woke up Tuesday morning with sore eyes - scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. We put Sonny back in the starting lineup, said coach Tim. Then lo and behold, we got off to a good start, taking the lead early. We were forced to make adjustments which worked. Mark Borboran had six markers, five rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block. Larry Fonacier drained a pair of triples to tally six points, grabbed three rebounds and issued two assists. Reynel Hugnatan, bumped heads with the San Miguel bigs a couple of times en route to grabbing four rebounds. The Aces dominated the boards, grabbing 57 rebounds compared to only 47 by San Miguel. The Aces had more free throws, converting 18 of 24 attempts compared to the Beermen who converted 10 of 13 attempts. Baguio and Tenorio shared the award of the Finals Most Valuable Player. Simpson scored on a follow up from underneath the ring as time expired to push Alaska to a nine-point lead after the first quarter, 28-19. Joseph Yeo drilled a long triple to cut the Aces lead to only four points, 44-40. But Simpson converted a jumper to go with a pair of free throws by Borboran as Alaska posted a comfortable eight-point cushion, 48-40, at halftime. The Aces first erected their biggest lead of 14 points, 41-27, with 7:07 to go in the second period after Baguio drained a triple followed by an undergoal stab. The scores: Alaska 102 - Diamon Simpson 28, Cyrus Baguio 24, Joe Devance 14, LA Tenorio 12, Sonny Thoss 12, Mark Borboran 6, Larry Fonacier 6, Topex Robinson 0, Reynel Hugnatan 0, Jeff Cariaso 0. San Miguel 88 - Gabe Freeman 32, Arwind Santos 16, Mick Pennisi 12, Alex Cabagnot 7, Jay Washington 5, Danny Ildefonso 5, Denok Miranda 4, Dondon Hontiveros 4, Joseph Yeo 3, Dorian Pena 0. Quarter scores: 28-19, 52-44, 77-64, 102-88. PBA All-Star: Smaller North uses speed vs taller South - Apr 27, 2010 Puerto Princesa City - Mark Cardona (180-G/F-81) was the most productive player, Gabe Norwood (196-G/F-85, college: George Mason) provided the highlight reels and the North All-Stars outsprinted and outhustled their rivals from the South. Playing without a legitimate center, coach Ryan Gregorio's North squad used its speed and free-flowing offensive style to score a 133-130 win over the taller South team of Tim Cone in the annual PBA All-Star Game at the Puerto Princesa Coliseum. Cardona scored eight of his 20 points in the fourth period but it was Norwood who stole the show as the Rain or Shine guard delighted the full-house crowd with a number of gravity-defying shots. Norwood's last basket, with 3:04 left, was a baseline two-handed slam that gave the North selection a 129-123 lead that proved to be enough cushion to secure the win. 'I never expected this,' said Norwood shortly after being named the most valuable player (MVP) of the 2010 All-Star game. I thought somebody else would grab it, but I feel grateful to be chosen.' The 2008-09 season rookie of the year (ROY) winner finished with 17 points, including eight in the first five minutes of the opening period to give the North squad a 23-16 edge. In the second half, the South team, behind Kelly Williams (198-F-82, college: Oakland), Cyrus Baguio and Sonny Thoss, turned on the heat and even grabbed a 101-97 lead with 2:27 left in the third period. But a 7-0 run by the North, capped by a Willie Miller (180-G-77) trey, put the Luzon-based squad up by three, 104-101, and both squads traded baskets all through out the final stages of the match. 'We used our quickness to the hilt to offset our height disadvantage,' said Gregorio, who improved his All-Star win-loss record to 2-1. Tim Cone, who was assigned to handle the South for the eighth time, the most by any coach, absorbed his fourth loss in the annual PBA spectacle. NBA commissioner David Stern also sent his congratulations to Filipino counterpart Sonny Barrios for the PBA's 35th anniversary and staging another successful All-Star weekend. 'Our valued relationship with the PBA goes back many years. In that time, your league has played an important role in basketball's global growth, substantially raising its profile in the Philippines and throughout Asia,' said Stern in his letter to Barrios. Meanwhile, the trio of three-point shootout champion Mark Macpagal, Yousif Aljamal and Jeff Chan scored a 51-29 walloping against the triumvirate of four-time MVP Alvin Patrimonio, Kenneth Duremdes and Rhoel Gomez in the Legends Shootout. - Rey Joble, GMANews.TV Scores: North 133 - Cardona 20, Norwood 17, Santos 17, Mercado 14, Miller 12, De Ocampo 12, Intal 11, Artadi 9, Reyes 7, Pinris 6, Helterbrand 6, Maierhofer 2. James Yap (191-F/G-82) proved why he's the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the conference as he carried the Giants anew to their 8th title overall and 5th All-Filipino crown. Purefoods thus tied Crispa Redmanizers with most number of All-Filipino titles. Yap scored 18 points including a back-breaking trey that sealed the victory for Purefoods. Purefoods joined Swift (1992 Third Conference vs. Seven-Up) and Northern Consolidated Cement (1985 Reinforced Conference vs. Manila Beer) as the only teams that registered a 4-0 sweep in a best-of-7 finals series. 'Masayang-masaya ako at nakuha namin ito. Para sa Purefoods fans ito,' said Yap, who was also named the Handy Flex Finals MVP by the PBA Press Corps. Roger Yap (186-G-77) added 16 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists while Kerby Raymundo (199-C-81) contributed 13. Rookie Rico Maierhofer scored all of his 12 points in the second half, 9 in the third where he helped the Giants to get some cushion after a 40-all halftime score. 'Chapter closed, destination reached, mission accomplished. Now we can celebrate,' said Giants head coach Ryan Gregorio, who bagged his third PBA crown. He is the first Purefoods coach to win two All-Filipino titles. 'It's not easy at all. The first 3 games could have gone either way. But we allotted extra motivation for tonight's game,' Gregorio added. The Giants came out firing in the game as they erected a 35-22 lead before Alaska unloaded an 18-5 bubble to tie the count at 40-all by the end of the first half. The Aces even took a 44-40 lead early in the third before Maierhofer spearheaded a 17-4 exchange for a 57-48 lead. Alaska kept on coming back and last threatened at 65-68, before James Yap and Roger Yap joined hands for a crucial 7-0 bomb for a 75-65 spread with 4:55 left in the game. Willie Miller (180-G-77) tried to ignite a late rally for Alaska as he buried a triple to slice the lead at 76-81, but James Yap answered with his own trey to seal the win, 84-76, 1:48 remaining. Joachim Thoss (203-C-81) had his best game in the series for Alaska with 19 points and 12 rebounds but his efforts were not enough to extend the series into another game. Miller had 17 points but was 6-of-17 from the field. LA Tenorio (178-G-84) contributed 11 markers. - Courtesy of www.abs-cbnnews.com |
