MBL Round 5: Johor Tigers defeat Adroit in the closest game of the week

The most exciting game of round 5 in the MBL took place in Johor Baharu. This derby game ended with only one-point defeat on the road of second-ranked Adroit (5-4) to first ranked Johor Tigers (6-1) 102-101 on Sunday evening. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of Adroit. Johor Tigers forced 21 Adroit turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. American forward Tevin Glass (206-1994, college: ETSU, agency: BIG) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 28 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks (was perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line !!!) for the winners and international point guard Yee-Tong Heng (178-1998) chipped in 21 points and 4 assists. Costa Rican-Belizean Charles Garcia (204-1988, college: Seattle) responded with a double-double by scoring 37 points (!!!), 16 rebounds and 4 assists. Johor Tigers have a solid series of four victories in a row. They maintain first place with 6-1 record. Adroit at the other side dropped to the third position with four games lost. Johor Tigers are looking forward to face bottom-ranked Pegasus (#6) in Bandar Seri Begawan in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Adroit will play at home against KL Aseel and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
The game in Bandar Seri Begawan was also worth to mention about. Fourth ranked Penang SY (4-5) played at the court of 6th ranked Pegasus (2-6). Penang SY managed to secure a 4-point victory 78-74. Australian Jean-Luc Morel nailed a double-double by scoring 23 points and 15 rebounds for the winning side and Jayson Lee accounted for 21 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Guard Jia-Jun Lee (180-1999) came up with 23 points for Pegasus in the defeat. Pegasus' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Penang SY maintains fourth place with 4-5 record. Pegasus lost fifth consecutive game. They stay at the bottom position with six games lost. They share it with KL Aseel. Penang SY will play against league's second-placed NS Matrix in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Pegasus will play against the league's leader Johor Tigers (#1) in Johor Baharu and hope to get back on the winning track.
The game in Kuala Lumpur was also quite interesting. Third ranked NS Matrix (5-2) played at the court of 5th ranked KL Aseel (2-6). NS Matrix managed to secure a 4-point victory 89-85 on Sunday. The best player for the winners was Jeff Viernes who scored 20 points and 5 rebounds. Manzo Jun produced 28 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists for the hosts. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. NS Matrix moved-up to second place. KL Aseel lost sixth consecutive game. They keep the fifth position with six games lost. They share it with Pegasus. NS Matrix will meet Penang SY (#4) on the road in the next round. KL Aseel will play against Adroit in Singapore and it may be a tough game between close rivals.



Pegasus - Penang SY 74-78

NS Matrix made 25-of-31 free shots (80.6 percent) during the game, while KL Aseel only scored eight points from the stripe. The best player for the winners was Filipino point guard Jeff Viernes (172-1989) who scored 20 points and 5 rebounds (was perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line !!!). The former international forward Yi-Hou Wong (196-1996) chipped in 22 points. Four NS Matrix players scored in double figures. Manzo Jun produced 28 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists and Filipino guard Jai Reyes (173-1987) added 15 points and 5 assists respectively for the hosts.
