Riyadi wins lebanese cup after smashing Sagesse 86-69
RIYADI win the LEBANESE CUP FOR THE FIRST TIME of his history WITH A
REMARKABLE VICTORY OVER SAGESSE.
13 years after their defeat in last lebanese cup final , riyadi does not
have this time to miss the occasion to add the only trophy missing to
its prize list filled already well. The yellows wins their fourth
tournaments of the year after those of Duba, Pekin and Houssam el Dine
el Hariri. The final opposed Saturday at Camille Chamoun stadium, in
front of 4 000 supporters come to encourage their favorite team, the two
best Arab and Asian teams of the moment. Riyadi which recorded the
return of the Pharaon Ismail Ahmad easily dominated Sagesse which was to
play without three of their key players, Paul Khoury, Elie Mechantaf and
George Chibaini. All three being wounded.

Riyadi started strong and created a small 5 points differential in an
attempt to take control of the game since the beginning. Ismails Ahmad
delighted the crowds as he marked his comeback with some great moves,
and allowed Riyadi to outperform Sagesse from both the perimeter and
under the basket. The first quarter ended in favor of the Yellows
(21-11), after Warner replaced Tawbe 5 minutes into this quarter to help
Ahmad offensively.
The second quarter saw a comeback attempt from Sagesse, who were trying
to reiterate the scenario that happened in the last three games in which
Riyadi would create the lead in the first quarter only to loose it in
the second, but managed only to cut the deficit to 5 points mainly
thanks to Riyadis overconfidence that cost them some easy fast break
points as Mahmoud and Warner attempted several overoptimistic alley-oops
that resulted in many turnovers on the yellows. The first half ended
(38-43) for Riyadi, but neither Racca nor Abou Chakra were satisfied
with their teams performance.
The third quarter began with more of the same, with Riyadis defense
denying Sagesse any easy point, while the yellows were still committing
turnovers. However, the gap was reduced to one point before Omar Turk
and Calvin Warner started relying on perimeter shots to restore the lead
ten minutes from the end to (66-51). Whether it was Abou Chakras
coaching or Ismails ability to play in any position, or even Warners
ability to adapt quickly to any playing system, the last quarter raised
a clear question about whether a replacement for Madisons position was
necessary, as the duo Warner and Ahmad showed that it can be a winning
combination to have both of them together on the court. Sagesses
defense was crumbling, and their lack of inside game started to appear
more clearly as the lead increased to 20 points. At the end, and after
an unfortunate hand injury for Alvin Sims, Riyadi had no problem keeping
the lead, and the game ended (86-69).
The best Scorer of the game for Riyadi were Calvin Warner with 22
points, 8 rebounds and for Sagesse, the best scorer were Jerold Ward
with 23 points, 8 rebounds.
As a reminder, the team will travel on Monday heading to Morocco to
defend its Champions title in the Pan Arab tournament and the greens
meet Al Jalaa in WASL club league.
