Caspiy Aktau are champions of Kazakhstan for the first time, stunning BC Astana 89-87 in overtime in a decisive Game 5 of the National League Finals at the Astana Academy Sports Hall on Sunday to dethrone the country's dominant powerhouse on their own floor.
Eric McGill (190-G-1996, college: SIU) was magnificent for the Aktau side, pouring in a game-high 31 points on 11-of-22 shooting with four rebounds, seven assists, and a team-high 33 efficiency across 42 minutes. The American guard hit the decisive three-pointer in overtime that put Caspiy ahead 82-79 with under a minute to play, capping a frantic extra period in which the visitors held Astana scoreless from the field down the stretch.
The game was a war of attrition. The two sides traded the lead throughout regulation before finishing tied at 79-79 to force overtime. There, Caspiy's defense made the difference Astana managed just eight points in the extra session, and McGill's late three proved the dagger. Eric McGill's free throws and a Vladimir Ivanov (208-C-1994) layup had kept Caspiy in front during the back-and-forth fourth quarter.
JP Moorman II (201-SF-1998, college: UC Riverside) added 18 points and six rebounds for the champions, while Ivanov posted 16 points and seven rebounds on 7-of-10 shooting for a 23 efficiency. Roman Marchuk (198-F-1993) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, and Konstantin Neff (198-F-1997) chipped in six points with six rebounds and a key overtime three-pointer.
For Astana, coached by Anton Ponomarev (210-C-1988), Robert Pan (202-C-1995) led with 19 points and three blocks, while Lithuanian guard Adas Juskevicius (194-G-1989, agency: Alti Sport) also listed as a player-coach had 18 points, five rebounds, and six assists. Vadim Chsherbak (194-G-1993) added 13 and Alexander Zhigulin (205-F-1994) had 10. But the hosts' overtime collapse and 38.7 percent three-point shooting (12-of-31) proved costly.
The title is historic for Caspiy Aktau, a club that had long been a fixture in the National League's upper tier repeatedly reaching the semifinals in the mid-2010s without ever capturing the championship. Their breakthrough ends an era of dominance by BC Astana, who had won nine Kazakhstan Cups and multiple national titles to establish themselves as the country's preeminent basketball club and sole VTB United League representative.
