Astana Tigers swept Okzhetpes 3-0 in the Kazakhstan Women's National League Finals on Sunday, closing out the series with a dominant 73-47 road victory at Kokshe Arena to claim the championship.
Coach Vitaliy Strebkov's side were never troubled in the clincher. After a tight 12-4 first quarter, Tigers exploded for a 28-16 second period to take a commanding 40-20 halftime lead that removed all suspense. The second half was a procession at 18-13 and 15-14 as Okzhetpes, coached by Boris Fatkulin, had no answers for Astana's suffocating defense and balanced attack.
Oksana Nurbaeva (188-C-1990) led the champions with 18 points on 8-of-15 shooting, adding 12 rebounds (five offensive) and three assists for a team-high 26 efficiency. Ukrainian forward Ganna Rulyova (183-F/C-1986, agency: BIG) who doubles as assistant coach was equally influential with 14 points, a game-high 13 rebounds, and seven assists for a team-best 20 efficiency in 37 tireless minutes. Anastassiya Alishauskayte (173-G-1988) orchestrated the attack with 13 points (3-of-7 from three) and three steals, while Dariya Tsukanova (178-F-2007) matched her with 13 points, five rebounds, and three steals.
Astana's defensive dominance was the story. They held Okzhetpes to 33 percent shooting (18-of-54) and generated 19 turnovers while committing just 10 of their own. The champions outrebounded the hosts 47-30 a 17-board advantage that ensured second-chance opportunities flowed overwhelmingly in one direction.
For Okzhetpes, Nadezhda Yakovleva (183-F/C-2003) was the lone bright spot with 21 points and 11 rebounds, but shot 9-of-13 from the field in what was largely a one-woman effort. Daria Surkova (176-F/G-2001) added nine points but shot just 2-of-10 from the floor, and Kamila Amanzholova (163-PG-2004) managed five points and six rebounds on 1-of-6 shooting.
