Higher League Round 23 (Regular Season): Turan defeat Champ1on in the closest game of the week

Sixth-ranked Champ1on (3-18) gave a tough game to first ranked Turan (19-2) in Almaty on Friday. The visitors from Turkistan managed to secure only one-point victory 65-64. However their fans expected much easier game. Turan forced 20 Champ1on turnovers. It was a great evening for guard Alymzhan Maksutov (180-1994) who led his team to a victory scoring 21 points and 4 assists. Guard Arsen Mzikyan (190-2006) helped adding 7 points and 9 rebounds. Bektimir Tau (200-2007) responded with 17 points and 6 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Turan have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They maintain first place with 19-2 record. Champ1on lost fourth consecutive game. Newly promoted team keeps the sixth position with 18 games lost. Turan are looking forward to face Tigers-KazATU (#5) in Astana in the next round. Champ1on will play on the road against the league's second-placed Bars in Petropavlovsk and is hoping to prove to their supporters that they can break losing series.
The game in Astana was also worth to mention about. Third ranked Shymkent (16-4) played at the court of 5th ranked Tigers-KazATU (7-13). Shymkent managed to secure a 7-point victory 77-70. It was an exceptional evening for forward Aleksei Vereshagin (200-1992) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 18 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists. Anuar Shakirov accounted for 19 points. Guard Roman Baybolov (188-2006) came up with 21 points and 7 rebounds for Tigers-KazATU in the defeat. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The victory was the fourth consecutive win for Shymkent. They maintain third place with 16-4 record having four points less than leader Turan. Tigers-KazATU at the other side keeps the fifth position with 13 games lost. Shymkent will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Tigers-KazATU will play on the road against the league's leader Turan (#1) in Turkistan and hopes to get back on the winning track.
The game in Karaganda supposed to be also quite interesting. Second ranked Bars (17-4) played at the court of 7th ranked Karaganda (2-19). Bars smashed Karaganda 76-39 on Friday. The best player for the winners was Andrey Vakhrameev who scored 8 points and 14 rebounds. Ruslan Shterkel produced 13 points for the hosts. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. The victory was the third consecutive win for Bars. They maintain second place with 17-4 record having just two points less than leader Turan. Karaganda lost their ninth game in a row. They stay dead last with 19 lost games. Bars will meet at home Champ1on (#6) in the next round. Karaganda will play against ChelSU in Kostanay and hope to secure a win.




Tigers-KazATU - Shymkent 70-77

The game in Astana was also worth to mention about. Third ranked Shymkent (16-4) played at the court of 5th ranked Tigers-KazATU (7-13). Shymkent managed to secure a 7-point victory 77-70. Bars held Karaganda to an opponent 22.4 percent shooting from the field compared to 45.2 percent accuracy of the winners. They outrebounded Karaganda 56-38 including a 36-19 advantage in defensive rebounds.
