 Toyota wins JBL Title
Toyota captured the JBL Super League tite by defeating the OSG Phoenix 77-66 on 3/25 in Tokyo in Game 4 of the best-of-5 JBL FInals. It's the second ever title for Toyota and their first since 2001-02. Sensational 1st year PG Doron Perkins (188-G-83, college: Santa Clara) had 19 pts, 11 rebs, and 6 assists to lead the team while SF Charles O'Bannon contributed with 18 pts and 8 boards. OSG put up a valiant effort as PF Ace Custis had 23 and 16 while his teammated Jerald Honeycutt had 17 and 17. OSG had won Game 1, but Toyota bounced back from that loss to win 3 straight games to win the championship.

After the game, the JBL announced this season's award winners. Doron Perkins (188-G-83, college: Santa Clara) of Toyota was selected as the MVP of the season (regular season and post-season combined) while Toyota head coach John Patrick was named the Coach of the Year. The Rookie of the Year award went to OSG's Takuya Kawamura. The "Best 5" selections were: PG Perkins, SG Takuya Kita of Toshiba, SF Charles O'Bannon, PF Ace Custis, and C Jerald Honeycutt.

Congratulations to Toyota for winning the JBL title under 1st year head coach John Patrick . In the JBL, the Coach of the Year award automatically goes to the head coach of the championship team, but even if Toyota had not won the title, Patrick would've been deserving of the honor. The mulit-lingual Patrick, a Stanford grad who speaks Japanese and German in addition to his native English, went the unconventional route and signed an import player (Perkins) to play point guard, something that's rarely seen in the JBL. He rebuilt the team overnight by bringing in 6 new players (including Perkins) and by benching veteran mainstay SG Takehiko Orimo, a former national team player who many believe is the best Japanese player in the JBL. In addition to all those changes, Patrick held a tough training camp in Australia in September and instituted 2-a-day practices during the season-an unheard of practice in the JBL. All those moves paid off handsomely as Toyota cruised to a league-best 22-4 record. They then knocked off Hitachi in the Semi-Finals and then annihilated OSG in the JBL Finals after that to capture the JBL title. Toyota had finished 4th in the JBL last season and many believed that they were in for a rebuilding year this season with a new coach and 6 new players, but Patrick took them to the top in only his 1st season, a truly remarkable achievement.
