CBA Round 33 (Regular Season): Top-ranked Shanghai wins another game

CBA top team - Sharks (27-4) had no problems winning another game on Saturday. This time they crushed twentieth ranked Blue Whales (0-31) in Shanghai 111-71. Shanghai outrebounded Sichuan 44-23 including a 31-18 advantage in defensive rebounds. Shanghai looked well-organized offensively handing out 30 assists comparing to just 15 passes made by Sichuan's players. It was a good game for the former international guard Hongquan Li (198-2001) who led his team to a victory with 21 points and 5 rebounds. American forward Kenneth Lofton Jr (201-2002, college: La Tech) contributed with 14 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. Forward Wenxue Yang (205-1999) answered with 24 points (on 11-of-14 shooting from the field) for Sichuan. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Sharks have an impressive series of twelve victories in a row. Shanghai maintains first place with 27-4 record. Sichuan at the other side still closes the standings. Shanghai are looking forward to face Guangdong ST (#6) in Dongguan in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Sichuan will play at home against Shandong H. (#3) and hopes to get finally their first victory.
Important game to mention about took place in Jinjiang. Eleventh ranked Loongs (16-15) saved a 2-point victory on the road edging 15th ranked Sturgeons (12-19) 100-98 on Saturday evening. Guinean-American Hamidou Diallo (198-1998, college: Kentucky) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 23 points, 12 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners and Ning Zhang chipped in 16 points and 6 rebounds. The best for the losing side was American point guard QJ Peterson (183-1994, college: VMI, agency: JCK Sports Group) with 29 points and 9 assists. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Shanxi L. moved-up to ninth place, which they share with Liaoning and Ningbo R. Fujian S. at the other side keeps the fifteenth position with 19 games lost. They share it with Xinjiang. Shanxi L. will play against Guangzhou (#13) on the road in the next round. Fujian S. will play against Qingdao E. and hopes to get back on the winning track.
Worth to mention about the upset in a game between Rockets (16-15) and Loong Lions (13-17), which took place in Ningbo. Higher ranked Rockets lost at home to fourteenth ranked Loong Lions 83-95 on Saturday. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Rockets. Lindell Wigginton nailed 29 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists for the winning side. Zavier Simpson came up with 20 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists for Ningbo R. in the defeat. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Guangzhou moved-up to thirteenth place. Loser Rockets dropped to the ninth position with 15 games lost. They share it with Liaoning and Shanxi L.. Guangzhou will meet at home higher ranked Shanxi L. (#11) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Ningbo R. will play against Xinjiang and hope to secure a win.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 33: Beijing D. beat Liaoning on the road 93-83. Nanjing lost to Qingdao E. on its own court 88-95. Jilin NE T. was outscored by Zhejiang GB. in Hangzhou 73-98. Jiangsu D. lost to defending champion Guangsha L. at home 81-88. Tianjin P. was crushed by Shenzhen L. on the opponent's court 86-114.
The most impressive performance of 33th round was 20 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists by Scottie James Jr of Tianjin P..



Fujian S. - Shanxi L. 98-100

Important game to mention about took place in Jinjiang. Eleventh ranked Loongs (16-15) saved a 2-point victory on the road edging 15th ranked Sturgeons (12-19) 100-98 on Saturday evening. Shanxi L. made 18-of-21 charity shots (85.7 percent) during the game. It was a great shooting night for Shanxi L. especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 52.6 percentage. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 25 assists. No shocking result in a game when fifth ranked Ducks (20-11) beat 9th ranked Flying Leopards (16-15) in Yingkou 93-83 on Saturday. The former international Rui Zhao (195-1996) nailed 34 points (!!!) and 4 assists (went 8 for 8 at the free throw line) for the winning side and Taiwanese point guard Ray Chen (182-1993, college: Liberty) accounted for 18 points and 6 assists (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line). The former international point guard Jiwei Zhao (184-1995) came up with 26 points and American power forward Eric Moreland (208-1991, college: Oregon St.) added 9 points and 11 rebounds respectively for Liaoning in the defeat. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Beijing D. moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Guangdong ST and Shenzhen L. Loser Flying Leopards keeps the ninth position with 15 games lost. They share it with Ningbo R. and Shanxi L.. Beijing D. will meet Jilin NE T. American power forward Jordan Mickey (203-1994, college: LSU) nailed a double-double by scoring 20 points, 14 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 blocks for the winning side and his fellow American import guard Quinndary Weatherspoon (190-1996, college: MSU) accounted for 20 points, 10 rebounds and 9 assists. Center Baiqing Zhao (204-1998) came up with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 14 rebounds and South Sudanese-Australian forward Akol Mawein (206-2000, college: Sacramento St.) added 22 points and 8 rebounds respectively for Nanjing in the defeat. Both teams had five players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games.
