The biggest surprise took place in Hangzhou where host Guangsha Lions (9-1) edged league's leader Ducks (8-2) 77-74 on Saturday evening. It was a key game for the top position in the league. The best player for the winners was American forward JaKarr Sampson (206-1993, college: St.John's) who had a double-double by scoring 11 points and 16 rebounds. chipped in 13 points and 11 assists. The former international center Qi Zhou (217-1996) produced a double-double by scoring 15 points and 19 rebounds for the guests. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Guangsha Lions have an impressive series of eight victories in a row. Defending champion keeps a position of league leader, which they share with Guangdong ST. Beijing D. at the other side dropped to the third place with two games lost. They share the position with Shanghai and Qingdao E.. They were replaced at the leadership position by Guangdong ST. Beijing D. will have a break next week, which should allow them to rest and make it back to the top of the standings. Guangsha L. will try to continue on its current victory against fifth ranked Shanghai on the road.
Bottom-ranked Blue Whales (0-10) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 109-97 loss to fourth ranked Eagles (8-2) in Sichuan. American guard Quinndary Weatherspoon (190-1996, college: MSU) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 29 points and 14 assists. Jordan Mickey contributed with 22 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists (on 10-of-12 shooting from the field) for the winners. American guard Shamorie Ponds (185-1998, college: St.John's) answered with 27 points and 9 assists for Sichuan. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Qingdao E. moved-up to third place, which they share with Beijing D. and Shanghai. Sichuan lost their tenth game in a row. They still close the standings with ten games lost. Qingdao E. will play against Shenzhen L. (#7) at home in the next round. Sichuan will have a break next round.
We should mention about the upset which took place in Taiyuan, where higher ranked Loongs (4-5) lost at home to fourteenth ranked Loong Lions (4-4) 70-74 on Friday. It was a great evening for Lindell Wigginton who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 25 points, 6 rebounds and 10 assists. Chuanxing Liu responded with 6 points and 17 rebounds. Loongs' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Guangzhou moved-up to eighth place, which they share with Shandong H. Shanxi L. lost their fourth game in a row. They dropped to the tenth position with five games lost. They share it with 4 other teams. Guangzhou will meet Tianjin P. (#19) on the road in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Shanxi L. will play against Jiangsu D. (#18) and hope to secure a win.
