WCBA Round 7 (Regular Season): Liaoning lose their first game against Hefei

Here is the last round review presented by LBM Management.

The most crucial game of the last round was the first loss of Liaoning Hengye (6-1) on the court of second ranked Hefei on Saturday night. Visitors were edged by Hefei 67-66. It ended at the same time the six-game winning streak of Liaoning Hengye. It may be a crucial game in the contest for the top position in the league. They outrebounded Liaoning 41-29 including 28 on the defensive glass. It was a great evening for American guard Jaime Nared (188-1995, college: Tennessee) who led her team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 11 points and 14 rebounds. Her fellow American import point guard Diamond Johnson (165-1983, college: Norfolk St., agency: LBM Management) helped adding 18 points. Hefei's coach used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. At the losing side American forward Myisha Hines-Allen (185-1996, college: Louisville) responded with a double-double by scoring 10 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists. Hefei maintains second place with 5-2 record behind leader Guangdong, which they share with Jiangsu and Shanxi. Liaoning at the other side still keeps top position with one game lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
Very significant was Shanxi's (#3) 78-74 road victory against 4th placed Sichuan. It was an exceptional evening for who led the winners and scored 22 points and 6 assists. Ruoyun Zhai accounted for 16 points and 4 assists. American guard Jaime Nared (188-1995, college: Tennessee) came up with 20 points and 8 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field) for Yuanda in the defeat. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Shanxi (5-2) have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They moved-up to second place, which they share with Jiangsu and Hefei. Sichuan lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the third position with three games lost. They share it with Henan and Xiamen. Shanxi will play against Beijing (#8) at home in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Sichuan will play against Hebei (#10) and hopes to get back on the winning track.

The victory was the sixth consecutive win for Liaoning Hengye. They maintain first place with 6-1 record. Henan lost their third game in a row. They keep the third position with three games lost. They share it with Sichuan and Xiamen. Liaoning will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Henan will play against Fujian Z. in Putian and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

There were no shocking results in the rest of the games of round 7: Fujian Z. destroyed Ganzhou on the opponent's court 92-67. Beijing lost to defending champion Guangdong in a home game 59-75. Shandong rolled over Shaanxi on the road 101-81. Jiangsu defeated Shanghai on its own court 102-91. Wuhan beat Xinjiang in a road game 91-77. Zhejiang lost to Hebei at home 75-86.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 14 points and 8 rebounds by Phillipina Kyei of Hefei.

Henan - Liaoning 63-69

The game between Top Four teams took place in Jiyuan. 3rd placed host Henan Phoenix (4-3) lost to first ranked Liaoning Hengye (6-1) 69-63. Liaoning forced 21 Henan turnovers. The game between closely ranked teams ended with bottom-ranked Ganzhou's (0-7) home loss to fifth ranked Fujian Nanan (2-5) 67-92 on Thursday. Fujian Z. made 28-of-34 free shots (82.4 percent) during the game. Fujian Z. outrebounded Ganzhou 59-20 including a 19-7 advantage in offensive rebounds. Fujian Z. looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Nigerian center Blessing Ejiofor (196-1998, college: WVU) fired a double-double by scoring 28 points and 20 rebounds (made all of her eight free throws) for the winners. Rumeng Tan chipped in 20 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals. American forward Myisha Hines-Allen (185-1996, college: Louisville) produced 17 points and Yang Kejing added 12 points and 6 assists respectively for lost side. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Fujian Z. maintains fifth place with 2-5 record, which they share with Hebei. Ganzhou lost their seventh game in a row. They still close the standings with seven games lost. Fujian Z. will meet at home higher ranked Henan (#3) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Ganzhou will play against Xiamen and hopes to get finally their first victory.

Very predictable result when leader Vermilion Birds (7-0) defeated on the road 9th ranked Beijing Great Wall (3-4) 75-59 on Friday. Guangdong looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Shuyu Yang fired 15 points and 4 assists for the winners. Chen Yanyu chipped in 13 points and 6 assists. Vermilion Birds' coach Zheng Wei used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American center Kai James (196-1995, college: FSU) produced a double-double by scoring 11 points and 11 rebounds and Zheng Ming added 14 points respectively for lost side. The victory was the seventh consecutive win for Vermilion Birds. Defending champion maintains first place with 7-0 record. Loser Beijing Great Wall dropped to the seventh position with four games lost. They share it with Xinjiang. Guangdong will meet at home Xinjiang (#7) in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Beijing will play against Shanxi in Taiyuan and hope to secure a win.

Not a big story in a game in Weinan where 12th ranked Red Wolves (1-7) were rolled over by fourth ranked Sports Lottery (5-3) 101-81 on Friday. Shandong dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Red Wolves's 30. Shandong looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists. Yang Hengyu fired 21 points and 4 assists for the winners. Junwei Cao chipped in 21 points and 4 steals. American power forward Sidney Cooks (193-1998, college: Seton Hall) produced 14 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists and the other American import guard Sierra Calhoun (183-1996, college: Rutgers) added 15 points and 6 rebounds respectively for lost side. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Shandong maintains fourth place with 5-3 record, which they share with Wuhan. Shaanxi lost their third game in a row. They keep the twelfth position with seven games lost. Shandong will meet at home Shanghai (#9) in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Shaanxi will play against Wuhan and hope to win that game.

They looked well-organized offensively handing out 34 assists comparing to just 14 passes made by Shanghai's players. American swingman Jazmine Jones (183-1996, college: Louisville) fired 18 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists for the winners. Luo Xinyu chipped in 22 points and 4 assists. American point guard Chennedy Carter (175-1998, college: Texas A&M) produced a double-double by scoring 34 points (!!!), 11 rebounds and 4 assists and center Yutong Liu (201-2001) added 21 points respectively for lost side. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Swordfish's coach tested eleven players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. The victory was the fourth consecutive win for Jiangsu. They maintain second place with 5-2 record behind leader Guangdong, which they share with Shanxi and Hefei. Loser Swordfish dropped to the ninth position with five games lost. Jiangsu will meet Zhejiang (#11) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Shanghai will play against Shandong in Penglai and hope to secure a win.

We cannot really consider it an upset in the game between close teams in Urumqi where 5th ranked Magic Deer (3-4) was defeated by sixth ranked hengfan (5-3) 91-77 on Friday. Wuhan looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. Ding Yike fired 22 points for the winners. American power forward Peyton Williams (193-1998, college: Kansas St.) chipped in a double-double by scoring 10 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists. Four hengfan players scored in double figures. hengfan's coach used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American-Hungarian forward Beatrice Mompremier (193-1996, college: Miami, FL) produced 22 points and 6 rebounds and added 20 points and 5 assists (made all of her seven free throws) respectively for lost side. Wuhan moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Shandong. Loser Magic Deer dropped to the seventh position with four games lost. They share it with Beijing. Wuhan will meet Shaanxi (#12) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Xinjiang will play against the league's leader Guangdong (#1) in Dongguan and hope to secure a win.
