- Mar 29, 2009 All-star games are entertaining, but not especially meaningful. However there are some things we can say about the CBA all-star game, won by the North, 102-97. The South won the second and third quarters, 28-22 and 31-17. The North won the first and fourth quarters 33-18 and 30-20. This tells the relative strengths of the teams as much as does the final outcome of the game. But we can say something about the performances of some of the players. Wang Zhizhi (214-C-77) was the star for the North, with 21 points and 10 rebounds in 24 minutes. He appears to be fully recovered from his injury, important to note since Bayi will not be in the CBA playoffs. He should be the center for the National Team in the Asian championships assuming that Yao Ming, Yi Jianlian and Sun Yue are wisely given the summer off. Hu Xuefeng of Jiangsu was the North's second most important player, with 11 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals in 30 minutes. He committed 3 turnovers. Rodney White of Zhejang Guangsha scored 19 points in 24 minutes, Donnell Harvey of Jiangsu had 14 points and 10 rebounds in 23. Zhu Fangyu of Guangdong added 16 points. Zhang Kai of Dongguan had no points and only one shot but got 6 rebounds in 7 minutes, showing what he is good at. He should also be on the National Team this summer. Wang Lei of Bayi scored 7 points in 12 minutes. Olumide Oyedeji of Shanxi Zhongyu had 24 points and 14 rebounds for the South, playing 30 minutes. He was the only import used by the South. Zhang Wei of Shaanxi scored 20 points in 26 minutes. Zhang is a young player who emerged as a star this year. As is often the case for Chinese players, I have two different birth years for Zhang, 1986 and 1984. Xu Guochong of Xinjiang scored 16 points in 14 minutes, hitting 4 of 5 three-pointers. Zhang Xuewen of Shanxi Zhongyu scored 8 points in 21 minutes. Zhang is considered to be a very athletic young forward with high potential, though he only averaged 7.5 points this season in 23 minutes per game. Li Xiaoxu of Liaoning had 7 points and 4 rebounds in 16 minutes but we should see him on the National Team this summer and better gauge his potential then. Chen Lei of Beijing scored 7 points in 18 minutes, though he only hit 3 of 9 shots. Yang Ming of Liaoning scored only 4 points but had 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals in 22 minutes at point guard. He had 1 turnover. Li Guang was scoreless at the point in 18 minutes, missing all three of his shots. But he had 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals to 1 turnover. Both young players are candidates for backup point guard on the National Team, and showed today that they can think pass-first, a concept which often eludes the more physically-gifted Chen Jianghua. Liu Jiulong of Shaanxi, who was injured most of he season, had 6 points and 5 rebounds in 16 minutes. He apparently replaced Lee Benson, contributing to the report of our colleague Robert Wang that Shaanxi's imports have been sent home. Mengke Bateer played 10 minutes, backing up Oyedeji, and had 2 points and 4 rebounds. Apparently the all-star game was only 40 minutes long, rather than the CBA norm of 48. But this is an all-star game, so who cares? South Team: Hu Xuefeng (185-G-80) (Jiang Su Team) Lu Xiaoming (176-G-79) (Fu Jian) Zhu Fangyu (201-F-83) (Guang Dong) Qiu Biao (200-F-83) (Dong Guan) Wang Zhizhi (214-C-77) (Ba Yi); North Team: Zhang Qingpeng (188-G-81) (Liao Ning) Li Guang (180-G-89) (Qing Dao) Xu Guochong (198-F/G-81)(Xin Jiang) Zhang Wei (203-C-86) (Shan Xi) Mengke Bateer (210-C-75)(Xin Jiang) There is no imports showed in this roster but it might be added into later. |
