Guandong Wins CBA Title With 90-81 Victory Over Liaoning
Guangdong won the CBA title today with a 90-81 victory over Liaoning. Guangdong won the championship series 4 games to 1. Guangdong jumped off to a 28-14 first quarter lead, but Liaoning narrowed Guangdong's advantage to 45-38 at the half. Guangdong turned it up a notch in the third quarter to lead 73-58. Zhu Fangyu (201-F-83) was again Guangdong's leader with 31 points and 5 rebounds. Liu Xiaoyu played most of the minutes at point guard and had 10 points and 7 assists. Chen Jianghua played only 12 minutes as Liu appears to be better at running the team, while Chen is an offensive force and his contribution was not that much needed today. Jason Dixon had 18 points and 11 rebounds in 34 minutes while Lamond Murray had 7 points and 6 rebounds in 26 minutes. The two imports played the full 60 minutes they are allowed. Zhou Peng (207-F-89) shared the shooting guard position with Wang Shipeng. If 6-9 Zhou can play shooting guard, he becomes a much more valuable NBA prospect. He is built a whole lot like Sun Yue, except that he can hit his shots in a game situation. Liaoning was hampered by the absence of Jamal Sampson, who apparently has a dispute with the Liaoning team. He also has a shoulder injury. From my vantage point I am unable to tell who is most responsible for the dispute, the team management or Sampson. Liu Xiangtao was limited to 11 minutes, likely from lingering effects of an ankle injury. He had no points, 2 rebounds and 4 fouls. Olumide Oyedeji played all 48 minutes for Liaoning and 15 points and 15 rebounds. Yang Ming had 21 points and 2 rebounds. Zhang Qingpeng showed why his stock as a point guard has dropped as he had 9 points, 3 assists and 9 turnovers. Li Xiaoxu (204-C-90) had 15 points and 3 rebounds and his stock continues to rise. Wang Zhizhi MVP as Blue Team Beats Red Team in CBA All-Star Game
The Blue Team defeated the Red Team 131-126 as Wang Zhizhi earned MVP. Wang scored 26 points and had 3 rebounds and 3 assists. But Liu Wei had even better statistics for the Blue Team with 26 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Note that Liu outrebounded Wang. While there is much you cannot tell from All-Star games, Wang's reluctance to pound inside is a reason for his limited effectiveness in real games against international competition. Tate DaJuan added 22 points and 5 rebounds for the Blue Team. Li Xiaoxu of Liaoning, class of 1990, led the Red Team. He had 29 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 5 dunks. Li even hit 3 of 4 three-pointers. In league games he almost never takes three-point shots. If Li develops an outside shot, he becomes NBA material. Harris Michael, winner of the slam-dunk contest, added 28 points for the Red Team. He hit 13 of 14 shots, including 12 dunks. Another thing Wang Zhizhi is loathe to do, despite being 7-1 and agile, is guard the basket. In an all-star game he can afford to ignore this chore completely and still win MVP.
