There was a small surprise when fifth rankedFirebonds (16-25) beat their close opponent Shizuoka (17-24) in Fukushima 98-93 on Sunday. Fukushima dominated down low during the game scoring 66 of its points in the paint compared to Shizuoka 's 44. Fukushima looked well-organized offensively handing out 27 assists. Venezuelan center Gregory Echenique (208-1990, college: Creighton, agency: Pensack Sports) notched 22 points and 6 rebounds (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field) to lead the effort and Lithuanian forward Rapolas Ivanauskas (208-1998, college: Cincinnati) supported him with 22 points. Even 20 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) by American forward John Harrar (205-1999, college: Penn St.) did not help to save the game for Shizuoka . Liberian-American guard Thomas Bropleh (196-1991, college: Boise St.) added 17 points. Four Fukushima and five Shizuoka players scored in double figures. Shizuoka's coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Fukushima maintains fifth position with 16-25 record which they share with defeated Shizuoka . Newly promoted Shizuoka keeps the fifth place with 24 games lost.
