Everything could happen in Manila at the game between two tied teams. Both sixth ranked SM Beermen and their close opponent Phoenix had identical 4-3 record. This time SM Beermen used a home court advantage and beat the opponent from Quezon 104-99. Phoenix was plagued by 27 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a very good performance for American guard Orlando Johnson (193-1989, college: UCSB) who helped to win the game recording 23 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. Forward Vic Manuel (193-1987) contributed with 22 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. Four SM Beermen players scored in double figures. Naturalized Canadian guard Matthew Wright (193-1991, college: St.Bonaventure) replied with 24 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists and American swingman Dominique Sutton (198-1986, college: NCCU) added 20 points and 9 rebounds in the effort for Phoenix. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. SM Beermen (5-3) moved-up to fifth place. Phoenix lost third consecutive game. They keep the sixth position with four games lost. They share it with Ginebra Kings and TNT Ka Tropa. SM Beermen's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Manila .
