advantage. Iran did not slow down in the third period. They were
more accurate from the field and secured a 59:50 lead at the final
intermission. Iran used all of their experience to keep Japan at bay
throughout the final stanza. Iran avoided drama of the final minutes
and ensured a comfortable win at the end. Asghar Kardoust notched 13
points and 7 rebounds for Iran.

Philippines - Qatar

Qatar crowned their Asian Games campaign with victory. They defeated
Philippines to finish in the fifth overall position.
Targuy Ngombo (196-F-89, agency:
Court Side) delivered 25 points and 12 rebounds for Qatar in
this one. The teams stayed close in the opening frame. They
exchanged baskets and the scoreboard read 17:17 at the first break.
Qatar pulled ahead early in the second period but not for too long.
A roller-coaster action continued as Philippines pulled in front and
posted a 39:36 lead at the interval. Philippines maintained the lead
throughout the third quarter. They entered the fourth stanza up by
as many as 4 points 64:60. But a disastrous start to the fourth term
did not allow Philippines to succeed. Qatar went on a 16:3 run early
in the final quarter to leave their opponents behind. Qatar did not
surrender the advantage in the reminder of the contest and raced to
the victory at the end.
Baker Ahmad Mohammed (199-F-86) produced 19 points and 10
rebounds for Qatar.

North Korea - Jordan

Jordan finished their Asian Games campaign on a high note. They
knocked down DPR Korea to occupy the seventh overall position.
Abdullah Abuqoura (202-C-84) stepped up with 20 points, 13
boards and 4 assists for the winners. DPR Korea raced in front early
in the encounter but Jordan quickly denied the effort. They grabbed
the lead to post a 23:19 advantage at the first break. Jordan used a
14:2 run in the second quarter to ensure a comfortable 17-point lead
at the interval. DPR Korea refused to surrender as they changed the
complexion of the encounter in the third term. The Korean side
increased the tempo and narrowed the gap at only 2 points with one
quarter remaining 55:57. Jordan tried to play aggressively in the
fourth period as they maintained the lead.
Fadel Alnajjar (192-G-85) and
Abdullah Abuqoura stepped up for Jordan late in regulation and
sealed the winning outcome.

China - South Korea

South Korea ended their impressive Asian Games run just a whisker
away from the title. Jaehak Yoo team lost to hosting China in the
championship clash tonight.
Wang ZhiZhi (214-C-79) proved his leading role for the hosts
scoring 20 points and pacing China to the triumph. The teams stayed
close for some time in the opening frame but the home team stepped
on the gas late in the period. China grabbed a 27:21 lead ten
minutes into the encounter. South Korea tipped off the second frame
aggressively as they went on a 14:4 run to surge ahead. China
responded equally as they regained the advantage late in the half.
Bob Donewald team secured a 43:37 advantage at halftime. The home
team used a 14:4 rally to take a 57:49 lead midway through the third
stanza. China arrived at the final intermission up by 8 points
64:56. They boosted the margin to 14 points early in the final
quarter and though South Korea went on a desperate rescue rally late
in regulation they could prevent the loss.

South Korea - Japan

South Korea made it into the Final of 2010 Asian Games. They toppled
Japan in the semifinal battle tonight.
Kim Joo-Sung (205-C-79) came up with 13 points and 9 rebounds to
lead the winners. It was a tough defensive battle right from the
start. The teams teamed up for only 8 points in the first five
minutes of the encounter. Korea took the lead but not for too long.
Japan went on a 12:3 run to establish a 14:9 lead at the first
break. The teams stayed close in the second period. The lead changed
hands before South Korea sealed the first half outcome at 27:26.
South Korea dominated the boards and it eventually paid off. They
went on a spurt late in the third quarter to pile up a 46:38 lead at
the final intermission. Japan struggled to get within striking
distance in the final minutes. They did so finally but South Korea
did not panic and celebrated a historic victory at the end.

Three-point loss once again cursed Iran. They lost by three points
to Qatar in the semifinal of 2006 Asian Games. This year it happened
again this time against China.
Mahdi Kamrani (181-G-82) scored 19 points and grabbed 6 rebounds
but it did not prevent Veselin Matic team from falling short against
the hosts. Iran led by three points midway through the final period
but a late rally from China sealed the deal. Iran got to an
impressive start. They executed perfectly defensively keeping China
silent. Iran ensured a 12:8 lead after ten minutes. China woke up in
the second period. Led by
Wang ShiPeng (197-F/G-83) the home team erased the deficit and
pulled in charge. They eked out a narrow 29:28 lead at the interval.
China maintained the lead throughout the tough intense third period.
Neither side was able to dominate as China entered the final quarter
up by only a single point 48:47. Iran stepped in front early in the
fourth quarter and remained in the lead for some time. But it was
China who made the final run for the win and snatched a difficult
yet so important victory at the end.

Jordan will face DPR Korea in the clash for the 7th place. Jordan
looked aggressive in the opening frame. They spurred in front and
recorded a 21:16 lead after ten minutes. Qatar struck back early in
the second period. They went on a 13:4 run to take the lead. Qatar
arrived at halftime up by two points 33:31. Jordan regained control
in the third frame.
Abdullah Abuqoura (202-C-84) paced the team as they established
a 44:42 advantage at the final intermission. Qatar showed character
in the final period. Playing without their charismatic leader
Yasseen Musa the team however returned into the contest and eked out
a tough victory at the end.

Philippines scored a comfortable win over DPR Korea in the
classification round of Asian Games. Rajko Toroman team will now try
to finish their campaign on a high note when they take on Qatar for
the fifth overall place tomorrow. DPR Korea will play versus Jordan.
Philippines dominated this one. They erupted for 28 points in the
opening quarter to take a 6-point lead. Philippines unleashed an
18:7 run in the second term to arrive at halftime up by as many as
17 points 54:37. More to come in the third period as Philippines
boosted the margin to 20 points and entered the fourth quarter
leading by as many as 21 points 76:55. Philippines stayed
comfortably in charge throughout the final period and earned a
well-deserved win at the end.

Thomas Wisman team. Japan went on a 12:6 run late in the opening
frame to take a 24:16 lead. They stretched the margin to double
digits quickly in the second quarter. Japan arrived at halftime
leading by as many as 20 points 50:30. Things got even worse for DPR
Korea in the second half. Japan maintained the pressure and ensured
a comfortable 21-point cushion before the fourth quarter. DPR Korea
got within 20-point range in the fourth period but never seriously
threaten the deficit.

sides. Both teams played in the Final of 2006 Asian Games with China
celebrating victory. Qatar did not manage to avenge the loss this
time. Matthew Skillman team got to a nice start as they were up by
two 12:10 midway through the opening quarter. But China erased the
deficit and registered a 20:16 advantage at the first break. The
hosts pulled away late in the first half. They established a 36:25
halftime buffer. The margin grew at 12-point mark in the third
period but Qatar did not give it up. They narrowed the distance at 8
points with ten minutes to go. Qatar got even closer late in
regulation but China stayed focused and eked out a tough win at the
end.

They maintained the advantage and finished the opening quarter up by
two points 21:19. More to come in the second period as South Korea
mounted the pressure. They dominated the boards and looked more
focused defensively. The Korean team stretched the margin to 8
points at halftime 44:36. Philippines could not get any closer in
the third frame. South Korea wisely kept their opponents at distance
posting a 61:51 lead with one quarter to go. The complexion of the
game did not change in the fourth frame. South Korea remained calm
and determined as they drove to a confident win at the end.

Jordan also made it into the playoffs as they are set to challenge
Iran for the spot in the semis. China stunned their opponents in the
opening frame. Jordan accounted for only 8 points facing an 18-point
deficit at the first intermission. China went on a 9:3 run to boost
the lead early in the second term. The hosts ensured a comfortable
47:15 advantage at halftime. China did not loosen the grip in the
third term. They entered the fourth period ahead by as many as 43
points 75:32. Jordan did not stand a single chance in the final ten
minutes as China coasted to yet another impressive win at the
tournament.

Asian Games. They held off Uzbekistan in Guangzhou to improve at 2-3
record in the fourth place in Group E. DPR Korea thus made it into
the quarterfinals. They will face Japan on Wednesday. Uzbekistan
remained winless at the bottom of the standings.
Chol Pak Un (185-G-81) fired 21 points to lead the winners. DPR
Korea and Uzbekistan kept it close before the Korean team went on a
9:5 run to take a 17:11 lead at the first break. A high-flying
second term saw DPR Korea stay in charge. They ensured a 36:31 lead
at halftime. Uzbekistan tipped off the second half on a 7:1 run to
surge ahead. DPR Korea answered right back as they triggered a 13:2
rally and secured a 50:40 lead at the final intermission. DPR Korea
stretched the lead to double figures at the start of the fourth
quarter. Uzbekistan failed to respond and the Koreans gradually took
over. They did not slow down and marched to the victory.

South Korea celebrated the fourth win at the Asian Games. They
breezed past Mongolia to improve at 4-1 record in Group E. The
victory allowed the Korean side finished the preliminary round in
the second position, while Mongolia slipped at 1-4 record and
occupied the fifth spot in the pool. South Korea will now take on
Philippines at the quarterfinal stage on Wednesday. South Korea
fired from all the guns early in the game. They accounted for 29
points in the first quarter to take an 11-point lead. South Korea
opened the second stanza on a 14:4 rally to establish a 21-point
lead. They enjoyed a massive 58:29 halftime cushion. Mongolia
struggled to keep their defense solid. The Korean team scored
eagerly as they piled up an 87:46 advantage at the final
intermission. Jaehak Yoo side did not stop in the fourth term as
they erupted for 115 points and claimed a comprehensive win at the
end. Seven players scored in double digits for South Korea.

Philippines defeated Taiwan on the final day of preliminary round at
Asian Games. The victory allowed Rajko Toroman team climb at 3-2
record in the third place in Group F. Taiwan fell at 1-4 record just
outside the quarterfinal selection. Philippines will now face South
Korea in the battle for the semifinal appearance. Taiwan entered the
game with their backs against the wall. They played aggressively and
put their noses in front in the opening frame. Taiwan enjoyed a
narrow 21:20 lead ten minutes into the game. But Philippines turned
the tables in the second frame. They erased the deficit and
established a 42:40 lead at halftime. The teams stayed close until
Philippines triggered an 11:2 run and piled up a 64:54 lead at the
final intermission. The Filipino side kept their opponents at bay
throughout intense fourth period and eked out a hard-fought win at
the end.

Qatar finished in the fourth position and they are going to take on
undefeated China on Wednesday. Iran marked their ambitions in the
opening frame. They played aggressive defensively limiting Qatar to
only 10 points. This allowed Iran to enjoy a 27:10 lead after ten
minutes. Iran continued their dominance in the second stanza.
Veselin Matic team secured a 51:26 halftime advantage. Qatar scored
only 10 points in the third frame and faced an insurmountable
31-point deficit at the final intermission. Iran eased to the
victory in the fourth period.

Japan earned a well-awaited victory over India in the final game of

record and won Group F. They will now fight with DPR Korea for the
spot in the semifinal. India finished the round at 0-5 record at the
bottom of the standings. Japan obviously saved energy for the
upcoming contest in this one. They started the game slowly allowing
India to stick around. Japan led by just four points ten minutes
into the encounter. The tempo increased the second frame. Japan
managed to boost the lead as they were up by 11 points at halftime.
India cut the deficit at just 7 points midway through the third
term. They did not allow Japan to clear off trailing by 11 points
prior to the fourth frame. But Japan eventually proved the strength.
They exploded with 28 points in the fourth quarter and ran away for
a comfortable win at the end.

Uzbekistan remained winless at 0-4. Jordan seemed well en route to
the victory as they posted a 15:7 lead after the opening quarter.

Jordan accumulated a 35:22 lead at the interval. But Uzbekistan woke
up late in the third quarter. They narrowed the distance to only
three points 45:48 with one quarter to go in regulation. Uzbekistan
got even closer in the fourth period and finally drew things level
at 57. The teams entered overtime where Jordan proved the strength
scoring 11 points and tallying the victory.

They surrendered against the hosts. China improved at 4-0 record
with the win, while South Korea slipped at 3-1 in Group E.

assists to lead the winners. China led early in the encounter but
could not maintain the advantage. South Korea pulled in front late
in the stanza taking a 22:19 lead after ten minutes. China quickly
replied early in the second term as they regained the initiative.

calm as they did not allow South Korea too close in the final

other hand slipped at 1-3 record. The teams stayed close early on
but DPR Korea went on a run late in the opening frame to take a
24:18 lead after ten minutes. DPR Korea maintained a 6-point lead
for some time but it was Mongolia who uttered the last word in the
first half. They burst out with a bunch of points to trim the
deficit at just two points 34:36. DPR Korea went off the dressing
room recharged and immediately broke free. They dominated in the
period securing a 60:49 advantage with one quarter remaining. DPR
Korea stretched the margin at 18-point mark midway through the
fourth term and never looked back en route to the win.

Qatar celebrated a tough narrow victory over Japan at Asian Games.
Qatar came from behind in the final quarter and snatched a one-point
win to improve at 3-1 record in Group F. They thus caught up with
Japan in the standings.
Targuy Ngombo (196-F-89, agency:
Court Side) unloaded game-high 33 points, grabbed 6 boards and
issued 3 assists to pace the winners. Japan looked well-balanced and
organized as always early in the game. They tipped off the encounter
with an 18:7 run. Japan maintained the lead as they enjoyed a 26:21
advantage at the first break. But Qatar gradually started to find
the rhythm. They narrowed the gap at 4-point mark at halftime 45:49.
Qatar got within striking distance in the third term. They trailed
by only two points at the final intermission. Japan kept in front
for almost the whole final period but it was Qatar who sneaked past
their opponents to the final victory.

Iran survived a big challenge from Taiwan to record the third win at
the Asian Games in Guangzhou.
Asghar Kardoust (210-C-86, agency:
SportsList Inc.) came up with 22 points and 16 boards to propel
Iran to the victory. Iran are now 3-1, while Taiwan slipped at 1-3
record in Group F. Iran entered the game strongly. They limited
their opponents at 14 points in the opening stanza to take a 22:14
lead. Taiwan adjusted both offensively and defensively in the second
term. They stayed close throughout the second period. Iran led by
just three points at halftime 36:33. Taiwan went on a 15:8 run early
in the third quarter to pull in front. Xuelei Zhang team had a firm
grip on the lead as they headed into the fourth period up by one
point 54:53. Iran managed to turn the tables in the final minutes.
They pulled in front and escaped with a narrow victory at the end.

Philippines made it look easy as they coasted past India for the
second win at Asian Games.
JV Casio (177-G-86) scored 18 points as Philippines secured 2-2
record in Group F. India fell at 0-4 after the loss. Philippines
surged ahead right from the start. They built a 21:14 lead ten
minutes into the encounter. India however stopped the rot in the
second term. They slowed down Philippines and struck back. Led by
Japdeep Singh (199-C-86) India managed to cut the distance to
only one point at halftime 30:31. Philippines did not allow their
opponents to develop that success. They opened the second half on a
17:4 rally to clear off. Philippines ensured a 22-point lead at the
final break and never looked back again.

Uzbekistan suffered a heavy loss to China at Asian Games tonight.
The team thus fell at 0-3 record at the bottom of Group E. China
stayed unbeaten with a perfect record of 3-0.
Wang ShiPeng (197-F/G-83) led the winners with 20 points.
Uzbekistan stunned China early in the encounter as they were up by
one 10:9 after five minutes of action. But gradually the hosts shook
off the sloppiness. China increased the tempo and outscored their
opponents 26:15 in the first frame. China limited Uzbekistan to just
4 points in the second period taking a comfortable 48:19 lead at
halftime. Things just got worse for Uzbekistan in the second half.
China dominated every facet of the game as they piled up a massive
77:29 lead heading into the fourth term. China looked confident as
they coasted to the victory in the final quarter.

Mongolia put up a good fight but eventually came up short against
Jordan at the Asian Games in China. Jordan thus improved at 2-1
record in Group E. Mongolia suffered the second loss in three games
played.
Ali Zaghab (204-F/C-88) was pivotal for Jordan with 17 points
and 19 rebounds. Jordan strongly entered the game as they led 12:6
midway through the opening frame. But Mongolia quickly picked up the
pace and narrowed the deficit at just three points at the first
break 14:17. Jordan opened the second stanza on an 8:2 rally to
clear off. They kept Mongolia at bay posting a 35:23 halftime
advantage. Jordan boosted the lead in the third stanza. They enjoyed
a 16-point advantage before Mongolia turned things around once
again. They capped the period with a 14:4 run to narrow the deficit
at just 6-point mark. The teams exchanged the baskets in the final
term but Jordan made the late run and escaped with a difficult win
at the end.

Tonight they held off DPR Korea to remain on top of Group E. Their

lead the effort. South Korea quickly pulled in charge in this one.
They erupted for 27 points in the first period taking a 15-point
advantage. The margin kept on growing in the second stanza. South
Korea dominated the boards and eased to a 25-point lead at the
interval 55:30. South Korea increased the tempo even more in the
third stanza. They established an insurmountable 35-point advantage
with ten minutes remaining. DPR Korea had to digest the third
straight bitter pill at the tournament.

nipped Philippines tonight to stay unbeaten in Group F.
Takumi Ishizaki (188-G-84) knocked down 16 points to lead the
winning side. Philippines slipped at 1-2 record. Japan and
Philippines teamed up for five points in the opening five minutes of
the game. Philippines adjusted late in the frame as they piled up a
14:9 lead. The teams traded baskets throughout the second quarter as
Japan managed to erase the deficit and pull in front. Thomas Wisman
team went into the dressing room leading by a single point 30:29.
Japan tipped off the second half with an 8:4 run to open the bigger
lead. They maintained well scoring a 48:43 advantage with ten
minutes remaining. Japan led by six points midway through the final
quarter but Philippines restored the intrigue when they denied the
distance. But Japan stayed cool in the dying seconds and escaped
with yet another last-second win at the end.

the game with aggressive defense. They held India to just 14 points
taking a 20:14 lead ten minutes into the game. Iran began getting

third stanza however Iran quickly restored a safe cushion. They

were ready for the challenge. Matthew Skillman team bounced back
taking an 8-point cushion at the big break. The third frame saw an
intense battle of two well-matched teams. Qatar remained in charge

Qatar jumped to a 7-point lead in the final period but Taiwan denied
the distance setting a mouth-watering finale. Qatar proved calmer as
they executed a narrow two-point win at the end.

Round in Group E. The hosts of the Asian games celebrated 98:62 win
at the Guangzhou Int'l Sport Arena. It was an easy start for the
favorites as they produced a 25-15 in the opening quarter. In the
second period the hosts dedicated more time and effort to defence
and limited the opponents to just 9 points. After 21-9 in the second
quarter China enjoyed 46:24 halftime advantage. The picture remained
the same in the second half with China dominating the court. They
added 28-21 in the third quarter and finished with 24-17 in the last
period. That victory allowed them to take 2-0 record on top of Group
E. North Korea meanwhile dropped to 0-2 in the bottom of the
standings.

18-15 lead after the opening period and nailed another 18 points in
the second frame. At that time Uzbekistan managed to provide 13
points and trailed 8 points at the halftime. In the third quarter
Mongolia again notched 18 points, while they allowed the opponents

Japan cruised past Iran in the top game of the Day 2 of the Men's
Preliminary Round Group F in China. Japan grabbed 2-0 record on top
of the group after 57:56 victory. It was a real thriller in the game
and actually both teams deserved the win. Iran opened the game with
19-17 in the start and then added 12-11 in the second frame.
Moreover the team celebrated the victory in the third period as well
as they needed 16-15 for 4-point advantage before the final stanza.
Japan however responded with 14-9 in the last frame to clinch the
second win. Ishizaki Takumi stepped up with 13 points for the

Arena. In the first game for both teams in Men's Preliminary Round
Group E Jordan celebrated 90:80 win. It was an offensive start and
both teams scored the majority of their baskets. North Korea started
with 26:24 and continued their streak after the win over Hong Kong
in the Qualifying Round. Jordan however bounced back with 23-13 in
the second period and took the lead at the halftime. Moreover North
Korea could score another 13 points in the third period as Jordan
held them for 19-13 to take the bigger lead. In the last quarter
North Korea celebrated 28-24 win but could not escape the loss.
Abdullah Abuqoura (202-C-84) stepped up with 25 points for the
winners and Hadrab Mohammad netted 19. Abdeen Mahd posted 15, whilst
Ali Zaghab (204-F/C-88) scored 11. Pak Myong Jin erupted with 27
points in the losing effort, whilst Pak Un Chol added 16. Kim Un

their Asian Games campaign. Zhou Peng knocked down 16 points and

China stormed into this one outgunning Mongolia 13:2 in the opening
five minutes. China posted a 22:8 lead ten minutes into the game.
The defending champions quickly boosted their lead to as many as 20
points in the second period. China established a comfortable 48:21
lead at the interval. Mongolia could not threaten the margin in the
second half. The difference between the sides was too obvious as
China rolled to an easy victory at the end. Wang ZhiZhi and Tang
ZhengDong knocked down 11 points apiece for China. Wang ShiPeng and
Li Xiaoxu had 8 points each in the win.
Ikhbayar Ganbaatar (180-G-83) answered with 8 points for
Mongolia.

coasted past Uzbekistan for the initial win in Group E. Lee
Seung-Jun came up with 20 points and 8 rebounds to pace balanced
effort from the Koreans. South Korea did not waste too much time and
surged ahead straight away. They accumulated a 25:11 lead ten
minutes into the encounter. South Korea maintained the margin well
enough throughout the next period. Uzbekistan faced a massive
22-point deficit at halftime. Things got just worse for Uzbeks in
the third term. The Korean side quickly boosted the margin to 30+
margin and entered the final stanza ahead by 34 points 74:40. South
Korea did not slow down in the fourth term and rallied to an
impressive first-day rout.
Ham Ji-Hoon (198-C/F-84) netted 15 points for the Korean team.

for Qatar. Saad Abdulrahman Ali netted 16 points for the winners.

Iran opened their Asian games last night in China. In the opener
Iran outscored Philippines 65:48 in the defensive style of the Men's
Preliminary Round in Group F. Iran started well and clinched the
first victory at the Huangpu Gymnasium. It was a good start for Iran
that took 17-10 lead after the first 10 minutes of the game. The
favorites controlled the half and proved their superiority also in
the second frame. After 18-10 the board showed 35:20 at the
halftime. Philippines actually scored another 10 points in the third
frame as well and again allowed the opponents to go on a bigger
advantage. After 12-10 in the period Iran improved to 17-point
deficit. In the last quarter both squads nailed 18 points each that
brought the total result in the game. Sohrabnejad Hamed poured in 11
points for the winners and
Javad Davari (185-G-83, agency:

14:7 lead and rightfully deserved the advantage. Japan however
responded with 17-9 in the second frame to take the lead at the
halftime. Both teams disappeared in the lockers as Japan enjoyed
24:23 advantage. The third quarter was another battle in the court
as the teams stayed close to each other. Japan managed to win the
frame 18-17 and increased the lead to 2 points after 30 minutes.
Moreover the winners added 21-17 in the last quarter for the final
success. Takeuchi Joji paced all the winners with 15 points and 13
rebounds.
Ryota Sakurai (194-G-83) notched 12, while
Kosuke Takeuchi (205-C/F-85) and Tabuse Yuta scored 10 each.
Tien Lei and Lin Chih-Chieh delivered 15 points each in the losing
effort. Lu Cheng-Ju netted 11, whilst Wu Tai-Hao had 8 points and 13
rebounds. In Day 2 Japan will face Iran that overcame Philippines in
the opener. Taiwan meanwhile will play against India that lost to
Qatar.
