FINAL Iran U18- Kazakhstan U18 95:76 Iran U18 triumphs at home at FIBA Asia U18 Championship for Men. In the Final game the team overcame strong Kazakhstan U18 95:76. Azadi Stadium crowd was gladly satisfied with their juniors effort. Mehdi Shirjang led the winners with 24 points. Farbod Farman netted 18, Ramin Honarmand scored 12 and Mohammad Amjad added 11. Alexander Tyutyunik, Anton Arsenyev and Artyom Skornyakov posted 18 each in defeat and Obirzak Akhmet had 11. Both Iran and Kazakhstan had already qualified for the FIBA U19 World Championship for Men in New Zealand next year. Both squads realized the importance of the game and tried hard from the very beginning. Iran managed to take 25:19 ahead at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was fatal for the guests that trialed 24:35 in the middle of it. Moreover Iran pushed the tempo and increased to 59:37 going into the changing rooms and never looked back. The score after the third period was 81:58 that already at that time gave Iran the confidence in a win. The hosts did not stop and won the Final 95:76. It was a great organization and the spectators enjoyed the win of their local team! In the game for the third position Syria overcame Japan 93:86. Belal Gneed led the winners with 24 points, while Samar Bawadekji netted 16. Makoto Hiejima top-scored in defeat with 25 points. Yuya Nagayoshi posted 20 and Yusoke Karino had 12. The bronze also put Syria in the FIBA U19 World Championship for Men in New Zealand next year. Syria went on a lead from the very beginning taking the control of the game. They finished the opening quarter leading 22:17. Syria pushed the tempo for a bit to take 41:38 at the half time. The game remained interesting in the second half and the teams were separated by 5 points entering the last stanza, 61:56. In the last period Syria led to the win and grabbed bronze of the tournament. Japan had some great games and deserved a higher position. Kazakhstan destroyed Japan, whose tallest player is 198 cm in the semi-final. Kazakhstan has six players 200 cm and over and that was the key of the game. The winners opened the game with 23:21 lead with some difficulties in the period. Later however they improved to 44:38 at the halftime. Japan was able to reduce the gap to 3 points entering the last period. It was however their last spurt in the game. Kazakhstan was too good for the opponent in the final stanza and destroyed them 36:14. The victory sent Kazakhstan to the Final of the tournament. Even though the team lost to China in the last day of the group Kazakhstan U18 clinched the top position before. China overcame the Kazakhs 97:74 but could not make it to the semis. Kazakhstan, who finished just outside the semifinals at Urumqi two years ago, raced ahead 11-4 early in the first quarter and that set the tempo for the rest of the game. They finished with 23:15 in the opening quarter and never looked behind. Kazakhstan outscored Saudi Arabia with 49:27 at the halftime and looked more optimistic. In the second half the winners held off the opponents and led the game to the winning end. Omirzak Akhmet (202-C-90) top-scored for the winners with 30 points. This time however Lebanon U18 upset the team 87:84 in a Group C preliminary round game.Philippines, who had won after allowing Chinese Taipei to bounce back before winning in second overtime on Wednesday seemed to have learnt their lessons. Trailing 61:66, at the start of the fourth quarter, Lebanon ran a 13-3 spree that brought back the confidence in their trait. Mikael El Nar led the winners with 32 points and Ahmad Ibrahim nailed 24. Ryan Garcia (178-F) top-scored in the losing effort with 28 points. The 20th Edition of the FIBA Asia Junior Championship started in Iran and will be held from August 28 through September 5. China, Japan, Hong Kong and India got into Group A. A position from where they only grew in strength. They led 62:37 after the half and moved to three digits in the end. Louay Obeidi was unstoppable with 37 points and Abdul Aziz added 18.
